Nova Belongs To Many Laravel Package

metasync-site/nova-belongs-to-many

A Laravel Nova field for working with belongs-to-many relationships. It offers a cleaner interface for attaching, detaching, and searching related records, making many-to-many management simpler inside Nova resources.

Product Decisions This Supports

  • Build vs. buy for admin tooling. This package addresses a specific, recurring gap: Laravel Nova ships a searchable BelongsTo field but historically does not give you an async-searchable BelongsToMany (tag/role/category picker) out of the box. If your roadmap includes ops-facing admin screens, this is a candidate to close that gap without custom Vue work.
  • Whether tagging/multi-relation UX scales with data. It informs the decision of when the default checkbox/select pivot UI stops working — typically once the related table exceeds a few hundred rows — and whether search-as-you-type is a requirement or a nice-to-have for a given admin screen.
  • Feature scoping for internal tools. If a screen is "assign these 5 roles" or "pick from 12 categories," this is overkill. If it's "attach any of 50k SKUs," it's the minimum viable interaction and should be scoped into the ticket rather than discovered in QA.
  • Vendor-vs-fork risk posture. With 3 stars, 0 dependents, and a single-source maintainer, adopting this is a make decision disguised as a buy: the realistic lifecycle cost is a 1–2 day internal fork and ongoing ownership, not a composer require and forget. That should be priced into the estimate before it enters a sprint.
  • Investment signal for the admin layer overall. A thin ecosystem around a paid framework (Nova) is a useful data point on whether the team should keep standardizing on Nova or move admin surfaces to a first-party/in-house stack where this kind of field is trivial to own.

When to Consider This Package

Consider it when all of the following hold:

  • You are already licensed on Laravel Nova and have committed to it as the admin layer.
  • You have a genuine BelongsToMany pivot (tags, categories, roles, assignees) where the option set is too large for a static select or checkbox list.
  • The screen is internal and low-blast-radius — a broken picker costs an ops person a minute, not a customer.
  • You are willing to vendor the source into your repo, pin it, and own it; treat upstream as a starting point, not a dependency you rely on for updates.
  • You have verified (before committing) Nova version compatibility, whether it supports multi-select vs. single, whether it handles pivot data, and how it behaves with scoped/authorized queries.

Look elsewhere — or write it yourself — when:

  • You are not on Nova (the package is useless without it, and Nova's license is the real cost).
  • The related table is small and static; Nova's built-in UI is fine and this adds a moving part for no benefit.
  • You need create-in-place ("attach a tag that doesn't exist yet"), per-option authorization, translatable labels, audit trail on attach/detach, or drag-to-reorder — confirm each of these exists rather than assuming, and expect to build the missing ones.
  • You require maintained dependencies with responsive security patching; 0 dependents means zero community vetting and a bus factor of one.
  • You need it on a customer-facing or revenue-critical path.

How to Pitch It (Stakeholders)

To executives: This is a small, free open-source component that lets our operations team quickly find and attach the right records inside our existing admin panel, instead of scrolling through unwieldy dropdowns once our catalog grows. It replaces a small piece of custom UI work we would otherwise fund ourselves. The catch is maintenance: the project is essentially one person's side project with no adoption, so we should plan to adopt the code internally rather than depend on the author. Net recommendation: approve a short, timeboxed evaluation (1–2 engineering days) rather than a standing commitment.

To engineering: Nova gives us searchable single relations but not searchable many-to-many, and this fills that hole. Treat it as reference source, not a trust-the-upstream dependency — vendor it, pin the version, add a test around the field's query behavior, and confirm Nova compatibility and pivot handling before we build a workflow on it. If it doesn't survive a two-hour spike, we write the equivalent ourselves; the scope is small and the fallback cost is low.
