merodiro/friendships
A Laravel package for adding friendships to Eloquent models. Send, accept, and deny friend requests, check relationship status, and organize friends into groups with a simple trait you drop into your User model.
Architecture fit. The package is a Laravel/PHP library exposing a relationship/domain API surface (the release references a friends_ids() accessor, indicating a friendship or social-graph trait consumed by Eloquent models). It sits at the model/trait layer of a Laravel application — a low-coupling integration point that fits conventional Laravel architecture (service container, Eloquent traits, migrations). No architectural rework is implied by this release.
Integration feasibility. Technically straightforward: composer-installed dependency, trait attached to the relevant model(s), and call sites invoking the helper. The only integration work generated by v1.2.4 is renaming call sites from friends_ids() to friendsIds().
Technical risk. The risk in this release is concentrated in one item and it is a breaking one. Renaming a public method is not backwards compatible: any call site still invoking friends_ids() will fail at runtime with a BadMethodCallException (or, if a magic __call/__get fallback exists, silently return null — the worse outcome, because it fails quietly rather than loudly). Because the change is a pure casing rename, the failure mode is a fatal error on the affected code path, not data corruption. Risk is therefore high severity per call site, low blast radius — bounded by how many places call the old name. Secondary risk: dynamic invocation via string names ($model->{'friends_ids'}(), call_user_func, Blade/PHP-string config) will not be caught by static analysis and must be grepped separately.
Key questions.
friends_ids() removed outright in v1.2.4, or is a deprecated alias retained for a transition window? (Release notes say "Changed", which implies removal — needs confirmation from the changelog/source.)camelCase normalisation that will produce further renames in subsequent patches? If so, expect repeat churn.Stack fit. Standard Composer + Laravel. No new runtime dependencies, no PHP version change or Laravel version constraint change is signalled by these notes — but that should be verified against the package's composer.json diff before scheduling, since patch releases sometimes carry constraint bumps silently.
Migration path. Mechanical and low effort: upgrade the dependency, run a repository-wide search for friends_ids (including strings, Blade templates, factories, tests, and any queued job payloads referencing the method name), rename to friendsIds(), run the test suite and static analysis. Estimated effort is small — hours, not days — assuming the call-site count is modest. The absence of a compatibility shim (if confirmed) means there is no mixed-version state to manage: all call sites must move in the same commit as the bump.
Compatibility. Two concerns. First, temporal: code deployed against the old package version while the new code expects friendsIds() will break, so package bump and code change must ship atomically — no separate deploy trains. Second, transitive: if any other installed package calls friends_ids(), our bump silently breaks that dependency. Check the lockfile's reverse dependencies before upgrading.
Sequencing.
Maintenance. Low ongoing burden: this is a small, purpose-built package and the change is cosmetic. The real maintenance signal is the author's versioning discipline. A breaking rename shipped as v1.2.4 tells us the package does not reliably signal breakage through SemVer, so our upgrade policy for it should be pinned versions plus deliberate review of every release, not automated caret-range updates. That is a standing cost, small but permanent.
Support. Upstream support expectations are modest — likely a single-maintainer open-source project. If the package is load-bearing for a core feature (friendships/social graph), the absence of vendor SLAs means we own the fallback: ability to vendor the trait into our codebase if the package is abandoned. Given its apparent size, that fork-and-own path is cheap insurance and worth documenting as a contingency.
Scaling. Unaffected by this release. The performance characteristics of the underlying queries are unchanged by a method rename. If the package performs N+1 relationship loads through this accessor, that is a pre-existing concern to profile separately — not a v1.2.4 issue.
Failure modes. The dominant failure is a runtime BadMethodCallException on any code path still using friends_ids(). Because this typically surfaces on user-facing model access, the blast radius is the specific feature that touches the friendship relationship, not the whole application. A quieter and more dangerous variant applies if the package implements __call: the old name may resolve to null and produce silently empty friend lists — which is a correctness bug that tests, not monitoring, must catch. Mitigation for both: exhaustive grep plus a test asserting the accessor returns expected non-null data, not merely that it does not throw.
Ramp-up. Negligible. Any developer familiar with Laravel and Eloquent can execute this migration. The knowledge transfer cost is explaining why the version is pinned, so a future engineer does not casually un-pin it and absorb the next breaking patch automatically. Worth a line in the dependency documentation.
