Product Decisions This Supports
- Build vs. buy for wizard-style flows (onboarding, checkout, KYC, multi-page applications, insurance/quote funnels). The real decision here is not "which package" but "does a wizard abstraction earn a dependency slot." This package forces that conversation early, which is useful.
- Platform fit check. The package is a Symfony bundle, not a Laravel package. If the team is on Laravel, this closes the evaluation immediately — that's a roadmap-relevant finding, not a footnote.
- Sequence/step orchestration as a domain concern. Multi-step forms hide real product logic: step ordering, conditional branching, back-navigation without data loss, draft persistence, resume-after-abandon, validation per step vs. per submit. Deciding whether that logic lives in a library, in a
Workflow/state machine, or in your own form layer is an architecture decision with long tails (it shapes how you A/B test step order and add steps later).
- Conversion-funnel iteration speed. If step order, optional steps, and branching are config-driven, product can reshuffle a funnel without an engineering cycle. That's the actual value proposition to weigh — not the form rendering.
- Dependency governance signal. This is a fork (of
CraueFormFlowBundle) with 0 stars, 0 dependents, one stale release (2021), and a NOASSERTION license. It's a data point for whatever policy the org has about unmaintained transitive risk.
When to Consider This Package
Do not adopt this fork. Concretely:
NOASSERTION license — no clear grant of rights. Legal/procurement will block it, and rightly so. This alone is disqualifying for anything shipped to customers.
- 0 stars, 0 dependents, last release March 2021 — no community, no security response path, no one to ask when it breaks against a newer Symfony major.
- It's a redundant fork. Whatever value exists lives in upstream
CraueFormFlowBundle, which has actual users and maintainers.
Consider the upstream / the general approach only if:
- You are on Symfony and already using Symfony Forms — the bundle composes with the Form component rather than fighting it.
- You need genuinely stateful, multi-request wizards with branching and back-navigation, not a single-page client-side stepper.
- The flow logic is substantial enough to justify a dependency — roughly, more than three or four steps with conditional paths, draft resume, or per-step validation. Below that, hand-rolling is cheaper than the integration plus the maintenance audit.
- You can pin a version and accept the cost of vendoring or forking it in-house if upstream goes quiet.
Look elsewhere when:
- You're on Laravel. Use Livewire or Filament wizard components, Inertia + a client-side stepper, or plain session-backed state. There is no reason to bridge a Symfony bundle into Laravel.
- The flow is short and linear — a 3-step signup doesn't need a framework.
- The flow is client-side only with no server-side step state — React/Vue steppers or a form library handle it with less ceremony.
- You need auditable dependencies (regulated, enterprise, or anything with an SBOM requirement).
- You'd rather model the flow as a state machine — Symfony Workflow or an explicit domain model gives you the same branching with clearer semantics and no form-layer coupling.
How to Pitch It (Stakeholders)
For executives: We evaluated a Symfony multi-step form library for our wizard flows. It's an unmaintained, zero-adoption fork with an unclear license, so we're not taking the dependency — the legal and maintenance risk exceeds the build savings. The underlying pattern (configurable step sequences, per-step validation, resumable drafts) is still worth having, and it's roughly a few days of work to implement directly or on a maintained upstream. Recommendation: build the flow logic ourselves, keep it small, and revisit if we end up with several distinct wizards.
For engineering: This is CraueFormFlowBundle re-published under a different vendor — zero stars, zero dependents, one release in 2021, NOASSERTION license. Treat it as a pointer to the upstream project, not a candidate. If we want the capability, either take upstream CraueFormFlowBundle with the understanding that we may end up owning it, or implement the step-sequencing in our own form layer (session-persisted state, per-step validator groups, explicit transition map). Both are small and both are things we can test and version.
Decision requested: Approve building the wizard flow in-house for the current scope; do not add this package to the dependency tree.
