Session Laravel Package

marko/session

Session management for the Marko PHP framework, offering a clean API for persisting user data across requests. Handles session storage, retrieval, and lifecycle with drivers that integrate into Marko's container and middleware pipeline.

Technical Evaluation

Architecture fit

  • The package is not a Laravel package. It is a read-only split repository of the marko/session component belonging to the Marko Framework (issues/PRs redirected to the monorepo). Any assessment framed against a Laravel application must treat this as a third-party framework component with no ServiceProvider, no facade, no Laravel container bindings, and no published config.
  • Scope is deliberately narrow: session interfaces and "infrastructure" — i.e., contracts plus a small runtime, not a batteries-included session driver set. For a TPM this reads as a stable contract layer, which is architecturally clean but means the value is only realized when paired with the full Marko runtime.
  • Hard coupling to Marko's bootstrap, container, and lifecycle conventions is expected. Session state is inherently request/response-scoped and middleware-adjacent, so the component is unlikely to be extractable as a standalone library without an adapter layer.

Integration feasibility

  • Zero stars, zero dependents, zero independent issue tracker: there is no observable production usage. Feasibility for a Laravel codebase is effectively "rewrite an adapter," not "install and configure." Laravel already ships first-class session handling (Illuminate\Session) covering the same contract surface; replacing it would be a net-negative trade.
  • Realistic adoption unit is a team already building on Marko. There, integration is trivial because it is a first-party component of that framework's distribution.

Technical risk

  • Bus factor / governance: read-only mirror with centralized issue tracking means roadmap visibility depends entirely on the parent project's health. A single-maintainer framework component with no dependents is a continuity risk.
  • Ecosystem gravity: PHP session handling is a solved problem in Laravel, Symfony (HttpFoundation\Session), and PSR-15 middleware. Competing against zero-cost, massively adopted incumbents is the core strategic risk — reflected in the low opportunity score.
  • Security surface: session infrastructure is security-critical (fixation, ID regeneration, cookie flags, storage backends). A low-audience component without a public CVE/advisory history is neither proven safe nor proven unsafe — that ambiguity is itself a procurement blocker.
  • Abandonment: score 0 with no downstream dependents suggests dormancy; a fork-and-maintain contingency must be budgeted.

Key questions

  • Does the parent marko-php/marko repo show recent commits and releases? Is this component actively versioned against them?
  • What session drivers exist upstream (native files, Redis, database), and are they in this package or elsewhere?
  • Is there any documented security policy, and has the session ID lifecycle been reviewed?
  • Is the interfaces-only surface stable enough to implement against, or is it still churning?
  • What is the intended migration story if the framework is discontinued?

Integration Approach

Stack fit

  • Fit against a Laravel stack is poor by design: wrong framework, no service provider, no config publishing, no Laravel-native storage drivers. Fit inside a Marko application is strong because it is a first-party component.
  • If a Laravel team is evaluating this, the correct conclusion is do not adopt; if a Marko team is evaluating it, the conclusion is adopt implicitly as part of the framework, then validate the driver layer separately.

Migration path

  • No migration path from Illuminate\Session exists or should be built. The contracts differ (request lifecycle, middleware ordering, container resolution), and the effort would exceed rewriting session handling in-house.
  • For teams leaving a Marko application, plan to port session semantics to Laravel/Symfony primitives at the boundary, not to carry this package along.

Compatibility

  • Confirm supported PHP versions against the parent framework's composer.json; expect modern PHP 8.x only.
  • Verify PSR compliance (PSR-7/PSR-15 or Marko-proprietary equivalents). Absence of PSR alignment raises integration cost with any non-Marko middleware.
  • Check versioning discipline: split repos frequently desynchronize from the monorepo tag they were generated from. Pin to the monorepo commit, not the split tag, where possible.

Sequencing

  1. Confirm parent-repo health (release cadence, open issue volume, last commit) before any code review.
  2. Read the contracts only — enumerate interfaces and decide whether a thin internal adapter is warranted.
  3. If proceeding inside Marko: validate the concrete session driver and storage backend separately, since this package does not supply them.
  4. Run a security-focused spike on session ID generation/regeneration and cookie attributes before any production path.
  5. Establish a fork-and-vendor contingency with a named owner before committing.

Operational Impact

Maintenance

  • Low ongoing maintenance if inherited as a framework dependency — you track the parent's releases. High maintenance if adopted into a Laravel or framework-agnostic codebase, where you own an adapter plus a vendored copy indefinitely.
  • Read-only mirror means you cannot file issues in-repo; all defect traffic routes to the monorepo. That adds a triage hop and makes it easy for your bug reports to be lost among framework-level issues.

Support

  • No vendor, no SLA, no commercial backing. Support is community-through-monorepo, which at current adoption levels likely means maintainer-only attention.
  • Internal runbooks and a named domain owner (session/security) are mandatory; do not rely on upstream responsiveness.

Scaling

  • Session infrastructure is a horizontal-scaling chokepoint: filesystem drivers break under multi-node deployments. Confirm shared-store support (Redis/DB) early, since that determines whether this component can survive beyond a single instance.
  • Session payload size and serialization strategy will drive memory and network cost at load; the interfaces layer does not constrain this, so driver choice is the real scaling decision.

Failure modes

  • Silent dormancy: package stops receiving updates while the parent framework moves on; security fixes for session handling never land.
  • Split-repo drift: the mirror diverges from the monorepo, causing confusing version resolution.
  • Driver absence: teams integrate the interfaces, then discover no production-grade storage backend is provided.
  • Session fixation / cookie misconfiguration from sparse documentation on secure defaults.
  • Fork lock-in: emergency fork creates a private, unaudited security-critical fork that then ages.

Ramp-up

  • Minimal for a developer already inside Marko — the interfaces are small and idiomatic.
  • Steep for anyone outside it: no Laravel-oriented docs, no examples targeting common stacks, and the README lives in the monorepo. Budget a spike (1–2 days) to read contracts and validate the driver layer, plus additional time for the required security review given the low external scrutiny.
  • Recommendation: do not adopt for a Laravel codebase. Treat as an inherited Marko dependency, gated on parent-repo health and a completed session-security review.
