Sulu Event Bundle Laravel Package

manuxi/sulu-event-bundle

Sulu Event Bundle adds event management to Sulu CMS, letting editors create and organize events with dates, locations, and details, then display them through flexible templates. Integrates cleanly with Sulu’s admin and frontend.

Technical Evaluation

Architecture fit

  • Unchanged at the core: manuxi/sulu-event-bundle remains a Sulu CMS bundle, not a Laravel package. It ships Symfony DI extension, Doctrine entities, Sulu admin XML/JS, and now an optional integration with sulu/automation-bundle. In a Laravel codebase it is still not consumable without operating a Sulu instance alongside, or porting the design.
  • The domain slice has widened rather than deepened architecturally. New surface area: MCP tools for events and locations, scheduled publish/unpublish via the automation bundle, smart content that evaluates website categories and tags, and direct routes for event templates. Each is an idiomatic Sulu/Symfony extension point (MCP tooling aside), so the bundle continues to slot into Sulu's admin and templating rather than fighting them.
  • The MCP tooling is the only genuinely novel architectural element. It introduces a programmatic read/write surface over the event domain that did not exist before — valuable for content operations and AI-assisted editorial workflows, but it is a new attack surface and a new permission model to reason about, not just another admin screen.
  • The "all-in-one" scope is now broader (events + locations + calendar + smart content + automation + MCP). Higher value on Sulu, higher cost to port off it.

Integration feasibility

  • Mechanically unchanged: Composer dependency, bundle registration in config/bundles.php, routing/admin import, Doctrine schema. Still requires a working Sulu 2.x skeleton.
  • Still no published compatibility matrix in the release notes. v3.5.0 adds an optional dependency on sulu/automation-bundle (guard uses interface_exists(), so it degrades gracefully) but the notes do not state which Sulu majors/minors are supported. That question remains open and must be answered from composer.json before committing.
  • The release notes materially improve the upgrade-path evidence. Six releases (3.1.7 → 3.5.0) of consecutive fixes and features is exactly the external validation that was previously missing. The prior "release provenance unverified / future-dated tag" concern is substantially mitigated — though it is mitigated, not disproven.
  • Still 0 dependents and low stars, so you remain an early adopter. The difference is that the maintainer is now demonstrably shipping rather than dormant.

Technical risk

  • Bus factor is still the dominant risk: small maintainer base, no commercial backing indicated, MIT license clean for forking. Active cadence reduces the likelihood of abandonment but does not reduce the impact if it happens.
  • New: data-format migration risk. The upgrade notes require running sulu:events:clean-image-data to reduce stored event image data to its id. Combined with fixes for "event image no longer written into templateData" and "template data no longer clears image, pdf, speaker or author," this strongly suggests earlier versions wrote bloated and/or destructive data into template data. Existing installations carry corrupt or oversized records that must be audited, not just cleaned.
  • New: serialization contract changes. "Referenced locations are serialized as plain arrays," "single event selection ids are treated as UUID strings," and "start/end dates are normalized before persisting" are all behavior changes to stored or returned data shape. Anything downstream reading event payloads (templates, exports, custom controllers) must be re-verified.
  • New: MCP write surface. The event update tool intentionally mutates only the given fields — good, narrow semantics — but it is a write path into editorial content. Its authentication, authorization, and audit characteristics are unevaluated.
  • Removed global admin override (sulu_admin.smart_content_label): a small but real chance of label regressions in admin UI if you relied on it.
  • MIT license remains clean for commercial use and forking.

Key questions

  • Which Sulu and PHP versions does v3.5.0 support, and is the constraint range honest? Does the automation-bundle integration require a minimum version of that bundle?
  • What exactly does clean-image-data rewrite, is it idempotent, and what does --dry-run output let us verify before mutating production rows?
  • Was image data written by earlier versions merely redundant, or actively breaking frontend rendering? Do we need a pre-cleanup backup and a rollback plan?
  • Which prior serialization formats changed (locations, selection ids, dates), and is there a backward-compatibility shim for templates written against 3.1.6?
  • What is the MCP tool surface's auth model — who can call it, can it publish, and is it enabled by default or opt-in?
  • Do smart content category/tag filters require taxonomy configuration that does not exist in a fresh install?
  • Who maintains it, what is the issue response history, and is there a stated upgrade policy for Sulu majors?

Integration Approach

Stack fit

  • Unchanged for Laravel: run Sulu as a separate content service behind an API you build, or port the entity/calendar/smart-content design. Neither is an install.
  • In a Sulu stack, the bundle is now more attractive as a domain layer because optional automation gives you scheduled publishing without custom cron work — but only if you already run (or are willing to run) sulu/automation-bundle.
  • The MCP tools make the bundle viable as a headless-ish editorial backend for AI-assisted workflows. If that is a product direction, this release is the first version worth evaluating for it.

Migration path

  • Assume no import tooling is provided. Plan a one-off import into Event/Location, mapping locales and taxonomies explicitly.
  • New mandatory step for existing installs: run sulu:events:clean-image-data --dry-run, capture and review the output, snapshot the affected tables, then run without --dry-run. Treat this as a data migration with a restore-tested rehearsal, not a post-deploy chore.
  • After cleanup, re-verify every template that renders image, PDF, speaker, or author — the fixes imply those fields previously behaved differently.
  • If replacing an existing events module, keep both behind a feature flag and diff rendered output before decommissioning.

Compatibility

  • Pin bundle and Sulu version together, plus sulu/automation-bundle if used. No floating constraints on any of the three.
  • Verify Doctrine mapping style (annotations vs attributes) and confirm bundle tables do not collide with existing ones.
  • Confirm admin asset build compatibility; Sulu admin extensions remain sensitive to the admin bundle's JS build.
  • Decide explicitly whether MCP tools are exposed. If yes, put them behind the same auth boundary as admin and log writes.

Sequencing

  1. Spike (1–2 days): fresh Sulu skeleton, register bundle, run migrations, confirm admin module loads, a smart content block resolves in a template, and a category/tag filter returns correct results.
  2. Compatibility freeze: record exact Sulu/PHP/Doctrine/automation-bundle versions that worked; write them into the repo as the supported matrix.
  3. Data audit (new, blocking for existing installs): dry-run clean-image-data, inspect template data for stray image payloads, confirm date normalization has not shifted existing start/end values.
  4. Schema and data model review: inspect generated tables and indexes; confirm migration reversibility before touching shared environments.
  5. Optional integrations: enable sulu/automation-bundle and validate scheduled publish/unpublish against a real staging content workflow; separately evaluate MCP tool exposure and permissions.
  6. Frontend integration: build templates and calendar rendering; wire direct event-template routes and check they do not conflict with existing routing; load-test smart content against realistic volume.
  7. Contingency: if version constraints fail or the maintainer goes quiet, a thin in-house event entity remains a bounded fallback — and is now a slightly larger port than before, since automation and MCP behavior would need rebuilding.

Operational Impact

Maintenance

  • Materially improved signal. Four minor releases since 3.1.6 with a coherent, fix-heavy changelog indicates an actively maintained project. The prior "you are effectively the maintainer" framing should be softened to "you are a co-maintainer with a fallback."
  • Still budget for an internal fork or vendored copy — the release cadence lowers abandonment probability but the 0-dependents, single-maintainer profile means an upstream disappearance still breaks builds.
  • Upgrade cadence is now a recurring task rather than a theoretical one. Every Sulu upgrade and every bundle minor becomes a compatibility audit; schedule it into upgrade tickets.

Support

  • GitHub issues only, no SLA, no commercial backing indicated. Unchanged.
  • Mitigate by vendoring source into your VCS or a private Composer path repo, and by pinning exactly.
  • The changelog quality is a genuine support asset — the upgrade notes are explicit and actionable, which is better than most packages of this size.

Scaling

  • Doctrine-backed CMS content scaling is unchanged: read-heavy event lists, calendar ranges, smart content resolution. Index start/end and location foreign keys; range queries without indexes degrade past a few thousand events.
  • New hotspot: smart content now evaluates website categories and tags, which is an additional join path on every block render in a page. Load-test content-rich pages specifically; cache aggressively.
  • clean-image-data implies event rows previously carried large media payloads — after cleanup, row size and query cost drop, which is a real performance win worth measuring before/after.
  • Admin-side load is negligible; frontend HTTP/fragment caching handles most traffic.

Failure modes

  • Upstream abandonment → no security or compatibility fixes; mitigated by internal fork.
  • Skipped data cleanup → oversized or malformed image/template data persists, frontend rendering stays subtly broken, and future upgrades compound the problem. Highest-likelihood operational mistake in this release.
  • Serialization format drift → templates written against 3.1.6 assumptions silently render blank locations, wrong ids, or shifted dates after dates are normalized.
  • Sulu major upgrade breakage → admin module, smart content provider, or automation hook fails to register silently; add a smoke test that asserts each registers.
  • MCP write misuse → unauthorized or accidental content mutation via the new tool surface; scope permissions and audit-log writes, or disable by default.
  • Timezone/DST defects → events on the wrong day for non-UTC locales. Date normalization is a fix in this direction but warrants explicit cross-timezone fixtures, especially for recurring events.
  • Calendar/smart content query collapse → timeouts on content-rich pages; monitor and cap rendered event counts.

Ramp-up

  • Developers still need Sulu/Symfony bundle literacy (DI, Doctrine, admin extension points); 1–2 weeks to productivity in the admin extension layer for a Laravel-centric team. Add roughly 1–3 days for the automation bundle and MCP surface if you adopt them.
  • Editors need modest training on events/locations admin, smart content configuration, and — new — the publish-state indicator and the scheduled publish workflow. The calendar view remains largely self-explanatory.
  • Recommend a single named owner for the internal fork, plus a written upgrade runbook that includes the clean-image-data dry-run step as standard procedure.
