Upload Data Bundle Laravel Package

manuelj555/upload-data-bundle

A lightweight PHP bundle for handling data uploads and import workflows. It integrates into Composer-based projects and offers a simple way to add file upload and data processing support to your application.

Product Decisions This Supports

  • Feature scoping for data-file ingestion. The package is a reference for a "upload a data file → validate → parse → persist" flow. Its real value to a PM is as a requirements checklist (accepted formats, size limits, validation errors, partial-failure handling, audit trail) — not as a dependency.
  • Build vs. buy. With 1 star, 0 dependents, a last release of 2019-05-20, and a score of 0.035, the "adopt OSS" option is effectively off the table. The decision this best supports is build a thin in-house module or buy a maintained component.
  • Roadmap risk allocation. Flags bulk data upload as an area we must own and staff for, rather than assume open source covers it.
  • Target use cases: back-office admin imports, CSV/spreadsheet ingestion, partner data feeds. All of these need validation, error reporting, and auditability — none of which this bundle credibly promises.
  • Framework mismatch: despite being described as a Laravel/PHP package, this is a Symfony bundle (UploadDataBundle2). Using it from Laravel means bridging bundle conventions for zero upside.

When to Consider This Package

Consider it only if:

  • The stack is genuinely Symfony (not Laravel) and you're pinned to its 2019-era PHP/Symfony constraints.
  • You want to read the source for design ideas, not ship it as a runtime dependency.
  • You're running a throwaway spike where maintenance risk is irrelevant and you accept forking.

Look elsewhere if any of the following are true:

  • Production use. Unmaintained for ~6 years, single author, no community, no visible security process.
  • You need PHP 8.x / Symfony 6–7 / Laravel 10–11 compatibility.
  • You expect tests, CI, documentation, or an upgrade path.
  • Better options: VichUploaderBundle or OneupUploaderBundle (Symfony), League Flysystem for storage abstraction, Laravel's native file validation plus the Storage facade, or a managed ingestion service.

How to Pitch It (Stakeholders)

Executives: "There's an open-source bundle that covers roughly what we need for data-file upload, but it's a one-person Symfony project last shipped in 2019 with essentially no users. We are not going to depend on it. I'm proposing either a small in-house module (roughly X engineer-days) or a maintained uploader bundle / managed ingestion service. We'll use the bundle only as a spec reference."

Engineering: "It's a Symfony bundle, not Laravel. 1 star, 0 dependents, last release 2019-05-20, score 0.035. Recommendation: do not add it as a dependency. We'll build our own upload/validate/parse pipeline behind an interface so storage and parsers stay swappable. If we want prior art, we'll spend a day skimming its source and move on."
