Correlation Ids Bundle Laravel Package

manomano-tech/correlation-ids-bundle

A Symfony/PHP bundle for generating, propagating, and exposing correlation IDs across HTTP requests, logs, and downstream services. Helps trace requests end-to-end and improves observability in distributed systems.

Product Decisions This Supports

  • Observability roadmap and incident-response targets. Correlation IDs are the backbone of "one request, one traceable thread" across services, queues, and cron jobs. Deciding whether to standardize them is a prerequisite for committing to measurable SLAs like MTTR (mean time to resolution), mean time to diagnose, and "time to first log line that explains the failure."
  • Build vs. buy vs. adapt. This package is a reference implementation of a pattern (propagate a correlation ID through HTTP headers, logs, and async boundaries), not a product. It directly informs the build-vs-buy call: the pattern is ~100 lines of middleware plus a logging processor, so adapt the pattern rather than adopt the package.
  • Cross-team standards. Whether correlation IDs are mandatory, what header name is canonical (e.g. X-Correlation-ID), and whether IDs are generated at the edge or per-service are governance decisions this package's design surfaces for the team to decide.
  • Incident tooling and support tiering. If you can trace a customer complaint to a single ID, you can justify a premium support tier or a self-serve "give us your correlation ID" flow — a product decision, not just an engineering one.
  • Vendor/APM consolidation. If correlation IDs are consistent, you can delay or avoid expensive APM/tracing vendor commitments, because native logs plus a propagated ID cover the 80% debugging case. That's a real budget decision.
  • Not a customer-facing feature. This enables internal quality and support experience; it should not appear on a customer roadmap except as "faster resolution" or "improved reliability."

When to Consider This Package

Consider it when:

  • You are on Symfony (this is a Symfony bundle, not a Laravel package) and want a pre-built wiring of the manomano-tech/correlation-ids primitives into the framework's request/response lifecycle.
  • You want to read the source as a reference design for how to thread a correlation ID through Symfony's kernel events, Monolog context, and outbound HTTP clients.
  • You have a legacy Symfony application and need a same-day, low-effort proof of concept for correlation propagation before investing in proper tracing.

Look elsewhere when:

  • You are on Laravel or a non-Symfony PHP stack. The bundle is Symfony-specific; you would be adapting it or reimplementing it anyway.
  • You are starting greenfield. Prefer OpenTelemetry (or at minimum a small in-house middleware) so you get trace/span IDs, W3C traceparent propagation, and vendor neutrality from day one instead of a bespoke header scheme.
  • You need active maintenance. This package is archived, last released September 2018, has 0 stars and 0 dependents. There is no security patching, no PHP 8.x / Symfony 6-7 compatibility guarantee, and no upstream support. Treat it as dormant.
  • You need queue/async propagation. Anything beyond HTTP request scope must be verified against current Symfony Messenger and your queue driver.
  • You require auditability or compliance guarantees. A single-maintainer, archived dependency in the request path is a supply-chain and change-management liability; a vendored or hand-rolled equivalent is easier to defend in a review.

Bottom line: Do not adopt it as a dependency. Do adopt the pattern, using this repository as a documented prior art for what a correlation-ID integration needs to touch.

How to Pitch It (Stakeholders)

For executives: Correlation IDs are a low-cost, high-leverage reliability investment: they give us the ability to take a single customer complaint and follow it across every service, log, and job that touched it. The practical benefit is faster incident diagnosis and a credible path to measurable MTTR targets — without buying an enterprise APM suite first. The specific package we evaluated is a dormant 2018 Symfony integration with no users, so my recommendation is not to take it as a dependency, but to adopt the pattern it demonstrates using a small, maintained, in-house implementation (or OpenTelemetry for the long term). Expected effort is small and contained; the payoff is a durable diagnostic capability.

For engineering: The package is a thin Symfony wiring of HTTP header propagation and log-context injection. It is archived, single-vendor, and predates modern PHP and Symfony versions — assume it will not install cleanly or will not survive an upgrade. The useful artifact here is the design: generate-or-accept an ID at the edge, push it into Monolog context, forward it on outbound calls, and propagate it across async boundaries. Recommend we implement that directly (or adopt OpenTelemetry for trace/span IDs plus W3C traceparent) so we own the code, control the header contract, and don't inherit an unmaintained request-path dependency.

For support and CS: If we ship this, support gets a standard script ("what's the correlation ID?") and a way to reconstruct a customer's session across systems. That shortens escalations and reduces the back-and-forth that currently consumes engineering time.
