Laravel Sidebar Laravel Package

maatwebsite/laravel-sidebar

A Laravel package for building configurable sidebars and navigation menus. Define items, links, icons, and active states in PHP, then render clean Blade sidebars with minimal setup.

Product Decisions This Supports

  • Framework upgrade (Laravel 11) — unblocked. 3.1.0 adds Laravel 11 support, so this dependency is no longer a reason to defer the platform upgrade. Treat it as a checkbox item in the upgrade epic rather than a separate workstream.
  • Build vs. buy for navigation. Sidebar/menu composition (registering items, ordering them, rendering in Blade, gating by authorization) is commodity functionality. Buying a small MIT package is cheaper than owning a bespoke implementation, provided the dependency stays maintained.
  • Feature scoping for admin/dashboard surfaces. Supports role- or permission-dependent sidebar content across multiple layouts without hardcoding markup in every Blade view — a real maintainability win if you expect 3+ distinct navigation variants (admin, customer, internal ops).
  • Release risk triage. 3.1.0 is a minor bump with a single change (Laravel 11 compatibility). No breaking changes, no deprecations — schedule as routine dependency maintenance, not a migration project.
  • Community-health signal (weak positive). A new external contributor landed the Laravel 11 PR. That's a good sign for a small package, but one PR is not evidence of a maintenance commitment — keep it on the dependency watchlist.

When to Consider This Package

Consider adopting when:

  • You are on Laravel 9, 10, or 11 and need server-rendered sidebars whose contents vary by route, role, or authorization gate.
  • You want sidebar definitions in config/PHP rather than duplicated across Blade templates, and you want ordering and visibility rules expressed in code.
  • Your team is comfortable owning a thin composer dependency and reviewing its source if needed — the surface area is small.
  • You need this in weeks, not quarters, and a full admin-panel framework is overkill.

Look elsewhere when:

  • Your navigation is client-side (Inertia, Livewire-driven SPA nav, or a JS framework) — the rendering model won't fit.
  • You are adopting a batteries-included admin panel (Filament, Nova, Backpack) that ships its own navigation; adding this creates a second source of truth.
  • You need enterprise support, an SLA, or guaranteed long-term maintenance — this is a small-community package.
  • You need advanced menu features (deeply nested trees, per-item caching, complex permission matrices); evaluate whether the package's model covers it before committing, or plan to wrap it.

How to Pitch It (Stakeholders)

To executives: This is a small, free, open-source dependency that keeps our Laravel 11 upgrade on schedule and avoids us building and maintaining sidebar navigation ourselves. The 3.1.0 release is purely additive compatibility work — no breaking changes, no new vendor cost, no licensing exposure. Risk is low but not zero: it's a small community project, so we're tracking its release cadence rather than assuming long-term support.

To engineering: Version 3.1.0 adds Laravel 11 support (PR #46, first-time contributor). No API changes from 3.0.x, so the upgrade path is a composer constraint bump plus a smoke test of sidebar rendering and authorization callbacks across layouts. Adoption is a normal composer require with config-driven sidebar registration and Blade rendering — small blast radius, easy to wrap behind our own abstraction if we ever need to swap it out.
