Firewall Bundle Laravel Package

m6web/firewall-bundle

Symfony bundle that adds a simple IP-based firewall to your app. Define whitelists of allowed addresses per path or host and return a custom response to blocked requests, keeping staging, admin, or private areas locked down with minimal configuration.

Product Decisions This Supports

  • Build vs. buy (outcome: build). The capability here — reject or allow requests by client IP / CIDR range before the request reaches application code — is roughly 30–80 lines of middleware in any modern framework. Paying the integration, audit, and dependency-management cost of a third-party bundle for that is a net negative.
  • Scope decision on environment and surface protection. IP filtering is the cheap, high-leverage control for staging/pre-prod environments, internal admin panels, and partner-only endpoints. This package is a reference implementation of that pattern, not the implementation.
  • Incident-response readiness. Deciding now how you'd block an abusive IP or range in under five minutes (middleware vs. reverse proxy vs. WAF) is a roadmap-level decision. This bundle illustrates the app-layer option, with all its limits (it can't stop traffic before PHP boots).
  • Legacy portfolio triage. If an existing Symfony service still depends on this bundle, that is a risk item to schedule, not a dependency to keep. Last release 2019-11-18, repository archived, zero dependents — the security-sensitive code path has had no maintenance for roughly six years.
  • Stack mismatch flag. This is a Symfony bundle, not a Laravel package. For a Laravel codebase it cannot be adopted without a port; the only transferable asset is the design pattern (kernel-level listener + IP/CIDR matcher + configurable rule sets).
  • Framework-native alternatives make the buy decision easy. Laravel already gives you middleware, TrustedProxy handling, and route/group-level guards; Symfony gives IpUtils, request listeners, and access_control IP matchers. Any of these supersedes the bundle with code your team already owns.

When to Consider This Package

Consider (narrowly):

  • You are maintaining a legacy Symfony 2/3/4 application already wired to this bundle, and a rip-and-replace is out of scope for the current cycle — in that case, pin the version, document the abandonment, and open a replacement ticket.
  • You want a reading reference for how to structure IP/CIDR rule configuration and kernel-level enforcement — MIT license permits copying the idea (not the unmaintained code) into your own middleware.
  • You need a stopgap in a Symfony app and accept that you are forking and owning the code, including patching it yourself.

Look elsewhere (the default):

  • Any Laravel or non-Symfony codebase — integration cost exceeds the value of the feature outright.
  • Any new build. Deprecated + archived + no releases since 2019 + zero dependents = no upstream fixes, no community triage, no compatibility guarantees with current PHP/Symfony versions.
  • Anywhere security review is a gate. An unmaintained component sitting directly on the request-rejection path is a supply-chain and audit finding waiting to happen.
  • Anywhere you need volumetric or pre-PHP protection — that belongs at the edge (nginx allow/deny, cloud WAF, CDN rules), not in application middleware. An app-layer filter still pays the full cost of accepting the connection and bootstrapping the framework.
  • Anywhere you need dynamic, per-tenant, or data-driven rules — that's a product feature requiring persistence, audit logging, and an admin UI. This bundle is static config, and it's the wrong starting point for that build.

How to Pitch It (Stakeholders)

Recommendation: do not adopt. Build the capability natively; use the package only as a design reference.

  • What it is: a deprecated, archived Symfony bundle (22 stars, 0 dependents, last release November 2019) that filters requests by IP address at the framework level. It is not a Laravel package, so it is not directly usable in our stack.
  • Why not adopt: the feature is small enough to own outright — an estimated 1–2 engineering days for middleware, CIDR matching, config, and tests — while the dependency carries permanent overhead: an unmaintained security-adjacent code path, no upstream patches, and a guaranteed finding in any future security review. The cost of buying here is higher than the cost of building.
  • What we get by building: code we can patch, rules we can extend into a real product feature (per-tenant allowlists, audit logs, admin UI) if demand appears, and no dependency on an abandoned repository.
  • What we should decide at the architecture level: app-layer filtering is a convenience, not a security boundary. Volumetric and pre-authentication blocking belongs at the edge (reverse proxy / WAF / CDN). Treat the middleware as defense-in-depth, and don't let it substitute for edge controls in any customer-facing commitment.
  • Action items: (1) approve the native build, (2) inventory any service still depending on this bundle and schedule replacement, (3) confirm the edge-layer story so we don't oversell what app-layer IP filtering can do.
