Http Status Laravel Package

lukasoppermann/http-status

lukasoppermann/http-status is a lightweight PHP package providing constants and helpers for standard HTTP status codes, including reason phrases and code validation. It makes API and web response handling more readable and consistent without extra dependencies.

Getting Started

Install with Composer:

composer require lukasoppermann/http-status

This is a small utility package, not a full Laravel integration: expect a static Httpstatus class rather than a service provider, facade, publishable config, or migrations. Start by reading the README and the package source to confirm the exact static method names and supported languages. The v4.0.0 release is notable for two practical additions: German is now accepted by Httpstatus::setLanguage('de'), and the 425 status code entry has been completed.

First use case: use it in an API exception handler or response helper to keep status text consistent:

Httpstatus::setLanguage('de');
$message = Httpstatus::getMessage(425); // confirm exact lookup method in the README

return response()->json([
    'message' => $message,
], 425);

For Laravel, the quickest win is wrapping the package in a small application service, then using that service from bootstrap/app.php, an exception renderer, or API middleware.

Implementation Patterns

  • Centralize status messages. Create a small HttpStatusMessage service or helper that wraps Httpstatus. This keeps package calls out of controllers and makes it easy to change localization or fallback behavior later.
  • Use in API exception rendering. In Laravel 11+ exception handling or a legacy Handler, map HTTP status codes to package-provided messages for JSON responses. Keep your machine-readable error codes separate from the human-readable status message.
  • Localize per request. If you want German messages, set the language from app()->getLocale() in middleware, then reset it after the request. This is especially important in long-running workers and Laravel Octane.
  • Use 425 deliberately. The completed 425 entry is useful for early-data or retry-later scenarios, but clients and proxies may not handle it consistently. Pair it with clear API documentation and, where appropriate, Retry-After.
  • Use it for metadata, not transport. Let Laravel/Symfony handle the actual response lifecycle. Use this package only to look up status text or related metadata.
  • Test the integration point. Assert the status code and your application’s error envelope, not just the localized message string. This avoids brittle tests when language state changes.

Gotchas and Tips

  • setLanguage is static/global state. In PHP-FPM this is usually harmless, but in Octane, queues, or long-running processes a language change can leak into later requests. Set and reset it explicitly per request or avoid changing it dynamically.
  • Only use supported language values. v4.0.0 adds de; other values may fall back or behave unexpectedly depending on the package implementation. Validate locale mapping in your wrapper.
  • Major version bump deserves a quick compatibility check. The release notes do not list explicit breaking changes, but 4.0.0 is a major release. Pin the version, run your test suite, and check the package’s PHP version constraints before upgrading.
  • Do not edit vendor files for custom copy. If you need messages the package does not provide, wrap it in your own translator or override the message in your application layer.
  • 425 is still uncommon. Some clients, gateways, or monitoring tools may treat it as unknown. Log and document it clearly if you start returning it.
  • Look at the package source for the status map. When a message looks wrong or missing, inspect the package’s status-code data and language files first; that is usually faster than debugging through Laravel’s response layer.
