Pii Sanitizer Php Laravel Package

lucajackal85/pii-sanitizer-php

Detect and redact personally identifiable information in PHP and Laravel applications. This package helps sanitize emails, phone numbers, names, and other sensitive data before logging, storing, or sharing, using configurable rules to reduce privacy and compliance risk.

Product Decisions This Supports

  • Logging and observability design. A PII sanitizer sits on the path between user data and wherever it gets persisted or shipped — application logs, error trackers, APM traces, support tooling. Its existence changes the default answer from "log the payload and hope" to "redact by default," which is a product-level decision about what telemetry the team can safely collect.
  • AI/LLM feature viability. Any roadmap item that sends user content to a model provider is gated on being able to strip identifiers first. A redaction layer is a prerequisite artifact for those features, not a nice-to-have.
  • Data retention and deletion commitments. Sanitizing at write time reduces how much PII lives in low-governance stores (log aggregators, backups, analytics warehouses), which materially shrinks the scope of a DSAR/erasure request and the blast radius of a breach.
  • Build vs. buy. The alternative is hand-rolled regex rulesets maintained in-house — a classic slow-burn maintenance tax with no product differentiation. Adopting a small community package converts that into a dependency decision.
  • Third-party data sharing. Contracting with vendors, analytics providers, or support platforms usually requires representing that shared data is minimized. A sanitizer gives engineering a concrete control to point at.

When to Consider This Package

Consider it when:

  • The product is a Laravel/PHP application that writes user-supplied content into logs, error reports, or exports and there is no existing redaction layer.
  • Privacy review, a security questionnaire, or an enterprise customer's procurement process has raised PII-in-logs as an open finding.
  • You need a lightweight, in-process redaction pass rather than a full data-governance platform.
  • The team is comfortable owning a young dependency: this is a pre-1.0 package, and v0.2.0 is a pure breaking change — the namespace moved to Jackal\PiiSanitizer. Any v0.1.x integration must update imports and be re-tested. Treat the public API as unstable and pin the version explicitly.

Look elsewhere when:

  • You need certified, audited, or contractually-backed data protection. This is a single-maintainer community package; it does not substitute for a DLP vendor, field-level encryption, or a compliance attestation.
  • The requirement is encryption or tokenization of PII at rest rather than redaction before emission — different control, different tooling.
  • You need guaranteed long-term maintenance, a security review with SLAs, or a support contract.
  • Redaction rules must be jurisdiction-specific and audited; you will need to own and validate the rule set regardless of package.

How to Pitch It (Stakeholders)

To executives: This is a small, low-cost dependency that gives us a defensible answer to "where does customer data end up?" It reduces the volume of personal data sitting in logs and analytics, which lowers breach exposure and shrinks the work involved in deletion and access requests. It is not a compliance certification and does not replace legal or security review — it is one concrete control that makes our privacy commitments easier to honor and easier to evidence in customer security reviews.

To engineering: Narrow surface area, integrates at the logging/serialization boundary. The tradeoff is maturity: v0.2.0 is a namespace rename to Jackal\PiiSanitizer, a breaking change with no deprecation path, which tells you the API is still settling. Pin the version, wrap it behind our own thin redaction interface so a future rename or replacement is a one-file change, and add a test that asserts known-sensitive fixtures are actually stripped before this counts as a working control. Budget a small amount of recurring maintenance for rule coverage — redaction that silently misses a field is worse than no redaction, because it creates false assurance.
