Laravel Add Select Laravel Package

lorisleiva/laravel-add-select

Laravel Add Select is a small Laravel package that simplifies appending select columns to existing queries. It provides a fluent helper for adding columns or subqueries to Eloquent and query builder selects without rewriting existing select clauses, making incremental query composition cleaner and m...

Technical Evaluation

  • Architecture fit: Narrow, utility-style fit for Laravel Query Builder code that needs subselect columns. It is not a platform or domain-layer dependency; value is limited to reporting, dashboards, API projections, and avoiding N+1 patterns where native subquery construction is awkward.
  • Integration feasibility: Low conceptual effort for a Laravel team: Composer install, auto-discovery or service-provider registration, and use within query builders. Actual feasibility is constrained by age: last release 2020, 32 stars, and likely stale Laravel/PHP version constraints. A current Laravel 10/11 application should assume incompatibility until proven otherwise.
  • Technical risk: High relative to value. Risks include abandoned maintenance, unsupported Laravel/PHP versions, query-builder macro conflicts, binding/SQL-generation edge cases, database-specific behavior, and hidden correlated-subquery performance costs. MIT license permits forking, but that transfers maintenance to us.
  • Key questions: Which Laravel and PHP versions are supported? Does current Laravel already provide equivalent native behavior via selectSub, addSelect, withCount, withSum, withAvg, or withExists? Is the package used on critical read paths? Can we isolate or reimplement the behavior locally with tests? Which databases must be supported, and have generated queries been validated against them?

Integration Approach

  • Stack fit: Appropriate only as a small query-construction helper inside Laravel services, repositories, or report builders. It should not leak into domain models, controllers, or shared infrastructure.
  • Migration path: Prefer a compatibility spike before adoption. If the package does not support the target Laravel/PHP versions, implement the needed behavior as a local query macro or query object using native selectSub/aggregate methods. If adopted, wrap it behind a repository or named query method so it can be replaced without touching callers.
  • Compatibility: Pin the package version, run composer why-not against the target framework, and add contract tests for generated SQL and bindings. Validate on every supported database engine, especially where correlated subqueries and aliases behave differently.
  • Sequencing: Start with one non-critical reporting query; prove installation, SQL correctness, and performance; then expand only if the package is compatible and measurably simpler than native Laravel. Keep a fallback branch that replaces the package with local code.

Operational Impact

  • Maintenance: Effectively unmaintained upstream. Budget for fork ownership, dependency audits, and Laravel upgrade work; do not treat it as a passively maintained dependency.
  • Support: Community support is minimal given age and adoption. Internal documentation and tests are mandatory.
  • Scaling: The main operational risk is performance. Correlated subselects can become expensive on large tables; require query-plan review, proper indexes, and monitoring for slow queries before production use.
  • Failure modes: Composer resolution failures after Laravel/PHP upgrades, macro or method collisions, incorrect bindings, database-specific SQL errors, and silent changes in query semantics. These are more likely because the package is old and lightly adopted.
  • Ramp-up: Low for Laravel developers familiar with the query builder, but the package’s “magic” should be documented. New maintainers must understand both the helper and its replacement path.
