Crumb Laravel Package

log1x/crumb

Crumb is a lightweight breadcrumbs package for Laravel. Define navigation trails with a simple fluent API and render them through a Blade component, with straightforward options for customizing markup, separators, and styling to match any theme.

Product Decisions This Supports

  • Navigation and information-architecture workstreams: breadcrumbs are a cheap, high-leverage wayfinding feature; this package lets you ship them as a scoped task rather than a sprint, which affects how you sequence IA improvements on the roadmap.
  • Build vs. buy: with 43 stars and a single-maintainer footprint, this is firmly in "buy small, own the risk" territory. It informs the decision to consume a focused, MIT-licensed utility rather than maintain bespoke breadcrumb logic in theme code.
  • CMS-driven and content-heavy surfaces: traditional marketing sites, docs, and Roots Sage/Acorn WordPress themes are the sweet spot. If your roadmap includes a Sage-based rebuild, this package is a line item in that migration plan.
  • Framework/upgrade planning: v1.1.5 is an Acorn 4.x compatibility chore, not a feature release. That makes it relevant to the Acorn 4 upgrade decision — a dependency you must resolve against when moving majors, not a reason to move.
  • Consistency and brand-surface decisions: because output is customizable, the PM decision is really "do we standardize breadcrumb markup across templates?" The package is the mechanism; the design system owns the outcome.
  • Not a lever for SEO strategy on its own: breadcrumb trails support structured-data and navigation-consistency goals, but the package handles rendering plumbing only. Don't let it substitute for a schema-markup decision.

When to Consider This Package

Consider it when all of the following hold:

  • You are building on Laravel or a Roots Sage/Acorn theme — this package's value proposition is Laravel-native ergonomics (service provider auto-discovery, facades, Blade rendering). On a plain WordPress theme or a non-Laravel stack, most of that value evaporates.
  • You need simple, developer-defined breadcrumb trails across many templates and want one consistent API instead of ad-hoc markup in each view.
  • You are already on or moving to Acorn 4.x, where v1.1.5's compatibility fix matters. On Acorn 3.x with a stable lock file, there is no functional reason to adopt or upgrade for this release.
  • Your team is small enough that one focused, maintainable dependency beats in-house code, and you accept a low-ceremony, low-maintenance integration.
  • Breadcrumbs are a secondary navigation concern — you want them declarative and out of the way, not a feature you plan to iterate on heavily.

Look elsewhere when:

  • You need automatic breadcrumb generation from content hierarchies (taxonomies, nested pages, menus). This is a builder API, not an opinionated auto-generator; you'd be writing the traversal logic anyway.
  • You need rich features — schema.org output, multi-locale trails, deep caching, or a full navigation suite. A broader navigation/menu package or your own layer will be less work than extending this one.
  • Project maintenance risk is a hard constraint. One maintainer, a 2023 last release, and a 43-star footprint mean you should treat this as vendored, forkable utility code. If your org requires active upstream SLAs, this fails that gate.
  • You are not on Laravel/Acorn. The Laravel coupling is the point; without it you're importing a framework dependency for string assembly.
  • The breadcrumb requirement is one or two static views — hand-written markup is cheaper than adding a dependency and its upgrade surface.

How to Pitch It (Stakeholders)

For executives (30-second version): Breadcrumb navigation is a small but visible trust and wayfinding feature, and we can ship it for roughly the cost of a scoped ticket instead of a build. We'd adopt a free, MIT-licensed Laravel package that handles the plumbing and lets our own templates control the markup — so the visual result stays on-brand. The tradeoff is maintenance risk: it's a small open-source project with a single maintainer and a 2023 release, which we mitigate by pinning the version, committing our lock file, and treating the code as something we could fork if needed. This is a low-cost, low-regret decision, not a strategic bet.

For engineering: This is a deliberately narrow dependency. It gives us a clean crumb-building API, Blade-friendly rendering, and Laravel auto-discovery, and it keeps breadcrumb definitions out of view templates and out of functions.php. Two things to know. First, the practical hosting context is Roots Sage/Acorn on WordPress, not a fresh Laravel app — verify the Acorn major before anything else. Second, v1.1.5 is a compatibility chore for Acorn 4.x, not a feature release, so it should be read as an upgrade-path item in our Acorn 4 planning, not new capability. Concrete asks: publish and use the config rather than hardcoding, register bindings in the service provider as the seam, isolate WordPress-facing hooks in a thin adapter, and add a CI matrix that resolves against both Acorn 3.x and 4.x if we support both. Use ^1.1 with a committed lock file, and debug in this order — Acorn version, package version, provider registration, config published — because failures here are almost always bootstrapping or lock-file drift, not application code.

Recommendation: Adopt for the Sage/Acorn surface where breadcrumbs are a real requirement. Keep it out of any area that needs automatic hierarchy derivation or advanced navigation features, and revisit if upstream goes quiet for another release cycle.
