Look elsewhere when:
For executives: A small, low-cost, reversible bet. It removes non-differentiating work from the roadmap without a vendor contract, and the exit cost is contained because we will isolate it behind our own interface. The risk is maturity, not money or lock-in. Ask: one engineer for one sprint, with explicit exit criteria.
For engineering: Treat it as untrusted by default. Pin the exact version, wrap it in an adapter, add integration tests around the boundary, and watch the changelog for 0.x breaking changes. Re-evaluate at v1.0 or if maintainer activity stalls.
For the product decision: Timeboxed pilot with a go/no-go — does it save more engineering time than it creates in upgrade and review overhead? If yes, adopt and standardize; if no, remove the adapter and we have lost a sprint, not an architecture.
