Monitor Laravel Package

liip/monitor

liip/monitor provides health-check endpoints for Laravel applications, running configurable checks for database, cache, queue, disk space, and custom services. Use its JSON status output to power uptime monitoring and alerting.

Product Decisions This Supports

  • Build vs. buy for health/observability: LiipMonitor is a reference implementation of a check-provider pattern (a registry of named checks—DB, cache, disk, external services—exposed via a single endpoint). The PM decision it informs is whether health checks are a first-class product surface or an afterthought. This package argues for the former: a stable, versioned /health contract that load balancers, orchestrators, and on-call tooling can depend on.
  • Roadmap: defining the health contract: Use the package's shape (checks registered centrally, each returning pass/fail plus a human-readable message, one aggregated response) as the spec for your own endpoint. Decisions this unlocks: response schema stability, whether checks are additive or breaking, authenticated vs. public endpoints, and what "degraded" means versus "down."
  • Deployment and release engineering: Liveness vs. readiness semantics, zero-downtime rollout gating, and canary health gating are all downstream of having a trustworthy health surface. This is a build-vs-buy lever with direct cost implications (fewer bad deploys, faster rollback triggers) and belongs in release-engineering roadmap conversations.
  • Incident response and SLA commitments: A health endpoint is the machine-readable version of your SLA. Deciding which checks gate paging (customer-facing) versus which only inform dashboards (internal) is a product decision about alert fatigue, not an engineering detail.
  • Legacy/portability strategy: Because the library is framework-agnostic PHP, it surfaces a real question—do you want health checking tied to your framework's lifecycle (boot the app, check it) or independent of it (a standalone probe)? That choice affects migration cost when you change frameworks or run mixed-runtime fleets.
  • Use cases it validates: pre-deploy smoke tests, Kubernetes/Docker probes, status pages, third-party uptime monitors, and post-deploy synthetic verification. Naming these explicitly keeps the feature scoped.
  • Do not use it as a dependency decision: Treat it as a design input, not a procurement option. The package is archived, deprecated, last released in 2014, and has zero dependents—that combination means no maintenance, no PHP 8 compatibility, no security patching, and no community to lean on. The high opportunity score reflects a market gap, not the package's fitness.

When to Consider This Package

  • Consider the pattern, not the package: Read the source when you need a concrete model for a check registry with pluggable checks and an aggregated result. Copy the architecture; do not adopt the code.
  • Only if you are maintaining a legacy PHP 5.x codebase with no Composer-era dependency policy and you need the smallest possible health-check scaffold—and even then, expect to vendor and own it permanently.
  • Look elsewhere for an actual Laravel implementation: use a maintained Laravel health package or native framework health routes with first-party cache, database, queue, and storage checks. Prefer something with active releases, PHP 8.x support, and test coverage.
  • Look elsewhere when you need real observability: health checks are a boolean, not telemetry. Metrics, tracing, structured logging, and error tracking answer different questions. If the actual need is "know when something is wrong," a health endpoint alone is insufficient—pair it with APM and alerting.
  • Look elsewhere for managed monitoring: hosted uptime and synthetic monitoring vendors cover external probing. Build your own only if the check logic is genuinely domain-specific (e.g., "is the pricing feed fresh?", "is the ledger balanced?").
  • Red flags that should stop adoption entirely: archived repository, deprecated status, no releases in over a decade, zero dependents, no security response process. Any one of these is disqualifying for production code; together they are conclusive.

How to Pitch It (Stakeholders)

For executives: We evaluated LiipMonitor as a candidate for standardizing application health checks. It is not adoptable—it has been archived and deprecated since 2014, has no active maintenance or dependents, and carries unpatched compatibility and security risk. However, it is a useful architectural reference: it demonstrates the check-registry pattern we should implement natively, at low cost, using maintained components. Recommendation: do not add the dependency; instead fund a small, bounded workstream to ship a stable, versioned health endpoint with a defined set of checks, authenticated appropriately, and wired into deploy gating and alerting. This improves deploy safety and incident response at roughly the cost of a sprint, and avoids the operational liability of an abandoned third-party library.

For engineering: The design is sound—a central registry, independent checks each returning pass/fail with context, and one aggregated response. We will reimplement that shape in-house rather than inherit a 2014 codebase with no PHP 8 support. Scope: define the response schema as a contract, separate customer-facing checks (paging) from internal ones (dashboards), keep checks cheap and side-effect-free, and make them safe to call frequently from probes. Do not import this package, even as a dev dependency; consult the repository as documentation only.
