Code Bundle Laravel Package

liip/code-bundle

LiipCodeBundle is a Symfony bundle for displaying and editing source code in your apps. It adds syntax highlighting and code-editor integration, making it easy to embed readable code snippets in templates, documentation, and admin screens.

Product Decisions This Supports

  • Build vs. buy vs. borrow for developer-experience tooling. The bundle is essentially a set of console commands that answer "where does this class/template/bundle/service actually live, and how do I open it in my editor?" That is a well-scoped, low-complexity DX feature. The decision it informs is whether to build that capability in-house, adopt a package, or rely on IDE plugins — and the answer today is "rely on the IDE / framework-native commands," which makes this a useful data point that the feature is commoditized.
  • Roadmap input for framework/CMS products. If your product ships a plugin or bundle ecosystem, the existence (and abandonment) of this package is a signal that first-party symbol-resolution commands (debug:container, route:list, equivalent "open in editor" links) belong in the core product, not in a third-party add-on that can be orphaned.
  • Onboarding-friction prioritization. The use cases it validates — new hires tracing which template renders a page, which service implements an interface, which bundle owns a route — are real onboarding costs. Quantify them; if they're material, solve them with native tooling and docs, not a 2015 dependency.
  • Deprecation/sunset policy precedent. A 25-star, zero-dependent, archived package is a clean example for your dependency-review checklist: what "deprecated" looks like, and why it should fail intake automatically.

When to Consider This Package

  • Effectively never for new work. It is flagged DEPRECATED, archived, last released 2015-06-15, has zero dependents, and targets Symfony2 — not Laravel. It will not integrate with a Laravel application at all, so it fails the basic platform-fit test before any other criterion.
  • Legacy archaeology only. Acceptable as a read-only design reference if you are scoping a modern equivalent, or if you maintain a frozen Symfony 2.x app and are vendoring/pinning it with no expectation of support or security patches. Even then, prefer native debug:* commands.
  • Look elsewhere for the actual capability:
    • Symfony: native debug:container, debug:router, debug:event-dispatcher, lint:container, plus the PhpStorm Symfony plugin.
    • Laravel: php artisan about, route:list, tinker, barryvdh/laravel-ide-helper, and IDE plugins.
    • Class/symbol resolution and refactoring generally: PHPStan, Rector, and Composer --dev tooling.
  • Red flags that should trigger rejection immediately: archived repo, no release in ~a decade, zero dependents, PHP 5-era code, no security response path, and a platform mismatch with your stack.

How to Pitch It (Stakeholders)

  • To executives: This is not an investment and requires no decision beyond "no." It costs nothing to ignore. Whatever problem it solved in 2015 is now solved by IDE plugins and framework-native console commands — the capability is commoditized, so there is no differentiation or cost saving to capture. Approving it would add an unmaintained dependency with no upside.
  • To engineering: Do not add this as a dependency. Archived, unmaintained code is a supply-chain and maintenance liability, and it targets Symfony2 rather than our stack. If a specific command is genuinely valuable, spend the hour to port the idea into a small first-party artisan/console command — that gives us the behavior with none of the risk.
  • Recommendation: Reject adoption. Retain only as a design reference for first-party developer-experience commands, and log it as a worked example in the dependency-intake checklist for what automatic rejection looks like.
