Typeahead Bundle Laravel Package

lifo/typeahead-bundle

Product Decisions This Supports

  • Feature scoping for one narrow use case: an autocomplete/typeahead field on an entity-backed Symfony form — typically a back-office "pick a customer/product/user" input. That's the whole surface area of this bundle.
  • Roadmap / legacy maintenance: it supports a "keep the lights on" decision for a Symfony 2.x application that hasn't been migrated yet. It does not support any forward-looking roadmap item.
  • Build vs. buy: the buy case is thin. The bundle saves a few hundred lines of form-type + JS wiring, but the total cost of ownership includes an unmaintained dependency pinned to two dead platforms. Verdict: build (or copy) rather than buy.
  • Use cases in scope: internal admin CRUD screens, legacy form-heavy back offices, migration bridges where feature work is frozen on the old stack while the replacement is built.
  • Use cases explicitly out of scope: new product surfaces, customer-facing flows, accessibility- or mobile-sensitive UI, and — importantly — any Laravel application. This is a Symfony2 bundle. Laravel is not a Symfony distribution and does not load bundles; despite both being PHP, there is no adoption path here without rewriting the package. If the brief was "evaluate this for our Laravel app," the evaluation ends at compatibility.

When to Consider This Package

Adopt only if all of the following are true:

  • You are actively running Symfony 2.x (including 2.8 LTS) and cannot move off it within the current planning horizon.
  • Your CSS layer is still Bootstrap 3.
  • The typeahead is a convenience on an internal tool, not a revenue-critical or compliance-relevant flow.
  • You have a fork-and-own plan — vendoring the source into your repository — because upstream has shipped nothing since 2018-12-13 and has zero dependents, which means effectively no external user base to catch breakage.
  • You accept the security posture: no CVE patching, no PHP 8 compatibility, no Symfony 3/4+ support, and a JS dependency chain that is also archived.

Look elsewhere if any of these apply:

  • You're on Laravel. Use a Laravel-native pattern: a Livewire or Alpine component, a small Vue/React autocomplete, or Select2 / Tom Select driven by a JSON endpoint.
  • You're on Symfony 4, 5, 6, or 7. Use Symfony UX Autocomplete, which is the maintained, first-party answer to exactly this problem.
  • You're on Bootstrap 5. Typeahead.js is archived; use Tom Select, Choices.js, or Awesomplete.
  • You need accessibility guarantees, keyboard navigation, or mobile parity — 2015-era typeahead behavior is weak on all three.
  • You need a support contract, SLA, or vendor accountability — none exists.

How to Pitch It (Stakeholders)

To executives: "Someone flagged a package that would save us a small amount of front-end work on one legacy screen. I'm recommending against adding it. It's a Symfony2 bundle — so it doesn't even apply to our Laravel stack — its last release was December 2018, it targets two frameworks that are both end-of-life, and no other project depends on it. The savings are a few hundred lines of code; the liability is an unmaintained dependency we can't patch. If we want the behavior, we copy the relevant code into our own repo so we own it, or we fold it into the UI refresh and use a maintained library. Recommendation: no new dependency; reference implementation only."

To engineering: "lifo/typeahead-bundle is a Symfony2 form type wrapping Bootstrap 3 typeahead.js. MIT, 21 stars, 0 dependents, last tagged release 2018-12-13. Both the framework and the JS library it wraps are EOL, so it won't install on Laravel and won't run on Symfony 4+. If a PM asks for it, the answer is: extract what you need, or use Symfony UX Autocomplete (Symfony) / Tom Select (anything else). Don't add it to composer.json."
