Observability Filament Laravel Package

liberusoftware/observability-filament

Observability tooling for Filament: view logs, metrics, and traces directly inside your Laravel admin panel. Provides resources and widgets that surface application health data so teams can monitor and debug without leaving Filament.

Product Decisions This Supports

  • "Do we ship an in-app observability surface?" This package is the presentation layer for a Laravel observability backend, rendered as Filament admin resources/widgets. It informs the roadmap question of whether health checks, error/log summaries, queue and schedule status should live inside the admin panel operators already use, rather than in a separate Grafana/Sentry tab.
  • Build vs. buy for internal ops tooling. The realistic alternative is not a commercial product but 3–10 days of engineering to hand-roll Filament widgets over Laravel's existing signals (failed jobs, Schedule:: results, log aggregation, Health checks). This package is a candidate "buy" (free, adopt) if it fits the stack; otherwise it is a spec-by-example for the build.
  • Support and on-call workflow design. Decides whether tier-1/tier-2 support staff get a first-look dashboard in the admin panel before escalating to engineering — a measurable reduction in escalation volume and mean time to triage.
  • Modular monolith architecture commitment. It is a presentation adapter inside the Liberu module family; adopting it implies adopting Liberu's module conventions, service providers and naming. That is an architecture decision, not a UI decision, and should be ratified as such.
  • Non-functional roadmap inputs. Forces early answers on who may see exception messages and customer identifiers (authz/redaction), retention windows, and whether observability payloads are safe to render in a panel with broad admin access.
  • Not supported: customer-facing status pages, SLA reporting, or anything requiring vendor support, security review evidence, or a compatibility guarantee.

When to Consider This Package

Consider it when:

  • You are already on Laravel + Filament and running (or planning) the Liberu observability module — this is an adapter, not a standalone product; without the backend module it delivers little.
  • The audience is internal staff only, on a private admin panel behind existing auth.
  • You need a fast, low-cost first version of an ops dashboard and are willing to vendor/fork the code into your repo and own it.
  • You have someone who can read the source in an hour and confirm Filament major-version and PHP/Laravel constraints actually match your composer.json.
  • The license question can be closed quickly — see below.

Look elsewhere when:

  • License is unresolved. NOASSERTION means no recognized SPDX license was detected. Do not merge this into a commercial or client-delivered codebase until legal has read the LICENSE file and confirmed terms. This is a hard gate, not a formality.
  • You need maintenance assurance. 0 stars, 0 dependents, single-vendor authorship, and a release date that does not reconcile with today's date are all weak signals: no external users means no external bug reports, no compatibility PRs, and no bus factor beyond the author.
  • You need real observability. For APM, tracing, error grouping, alerting and retention, use Laravel Telescope/Horizon locally, and a managed service (Sentry, Nightwatch, Oh Dear, Grafana stack) in production. This package shows data; it does not collect, store, alert or guarantee anything.
  • The panel is reachable by customers or partners, or you operate under SOC 2 / ISO 27001 / HIPAA-style obligations where third-party code requires provenance and review evidence.
  • You need contractual support or a security disclosure channel.

Due diligence checklist before any adoption: read the LICENSE file; pin the exact commit; diff the Filament and Laravel version constraints against yours; verify no hard dependency on paid/private Liberu modules; review every query and view for N+1s and for exposure of secrets, env values, SQL, tokens or PII; confirm authorization gates on each widget; record a fork-and-own decision with a named maintainer.

How to Pitch It (Stakeholders)

To executives — one paragraph: A small, free, community-authored add-on that would let us display system health, error and job-queue status inside the admin panel our support team already uses, so triage happens in one place instead of three. It is early-stage — no adoption, one author, and an unclear license — so the recommendation is not to take a production dependency today. Instead, a timeboxed 2-day spike: one engineer reads the source, confirms version fit, and reports back with a build-vs-fork recommendation. Total cost is low; the decision it unblocks (whether to invest in an internal ops dashboard this quarter) is worth considerably more.

To engineering leadership: Treat it as a reference implementation for Filament-based observability views, not a dependency. Value is in the patterns, not the package. We can either fork it into app/Filament under our own ownership, or rebuild the 3–4 widgets we actually need with full control over authorization, redaction and query cost — likely 3–10 days. Ask: which Filament and Laravel majors are we on, and does this ship anything that reads .env or raw exception payloads?

Framing the risk honestly: 0 stars and 0 dependents means zero field-testing, not zero quality — but it also means no one else will find the bugs for us. The license is the only genuine blocker; everything else is a resourcing question. If we adopt, we adopt it as our own code, with an owner, a pinned commit and a removal plan.

Recommendation: Spike now, decide in two days. Default outcome is "build small, borrow ideas," with fork-and-own as the fallback if the spike shows the adapter already covers 80% of the widgets we need.
