Laravel Enum Pro Laravel Package

lazerg/laravel-enum-pro

Laravel Enum Pro enhances PHP enums for Laravel with validation rules, Eloquent casts, labels, descriptions, and localization. Build select options and display human-friendly enum values in forms, APIs, and Blade views with less boilerplate.

Product Decisions This Supports

  • Feature delivery on enum-heavy domains. Status lifecycles, roles/permissions, order states, subscription tiers, and notification types all need human-readable labels, validation messages, and UI metadata. A package that enriches PHP 8.1 enums lets teams ship these features from a single source of truth instead of duplicating label maps across Blade templates, API resources, and validation rules.
  • Build vs. buy for "enum plumbing." The capability is small and non-differentiating. Buying (or adopting) is usually correct if the package is stable; building in-house is a 1–3 day task but becomes permanent maintenance. This package shifts that decision toward "adopt with a wrapper."
  • API and frontend contracts. Enhanced enums typically expose toArray()/forSelect()- style output, which becomes the contract for form dropdowns, filter chips, badge colors, and mobile clients. That is a product decision about consistency: one endpoint shape for all enumerable fields reduces frontend rework and QA surface.
  • Localization and copy changes. Label/description methods move user-facing strings out of controllers and migrations, making copy iterations (renaming "Cancelled" to "Withdrawn") a one-line change rather than a cross-repo search. This affects release cadence for content-adjacent features.
  • Roadmap sequencing. If the roadmap includes admin panels, workflow engines, or configurable catalogs, enum ergonomics compound in value. If the roadmap is a thin API with few enumerations, the payoff is marginal.
  • Risk posture for dependencies. At ~43 stars and a 0.375 maturity score, this is a convenience dependency, not infrastructure. It should never sit on a critical path without an internal abstraction and an exit plan.

When to Consider This Package

Consider it when:

  • The codebase is Laravel on PHP 8.1+ and already uses native backed enums; the package is additive rather than a parallel enum model.
  • You have repeated boilerplate: label arrays in config/, @if ($status === 'active') chains, hand-written Rule::in(...) validations, and per-enum casts scattered across models.
  • You need Laravel-native integration — model attribute casting, request validation rules, and resource serialization — without writing a base enum trait yourself.
  • Enum count is moderate to high (roughly 10+ enums), so the duplication cost is real and measurable.
  • The team can absorb a small, single-maintainer dependency inside a thin internal wrapper (App\Support\Enums\BaseEnum) so a future swap is a refactor of one file.
  • You want a low-ceremony option; the "simplified" framing suggests a smaller API surface than heavier enum suites.

Look elsewhere — or build in-house — when:

  • PHP is below 8.1, or the enums must serve non-Laravel services (queues, Go/Node consumers) where a shared schema matters more than PHP ergonomics.
  • You already standardize on a mature, widely adopted enum package (e.g., BenSampo or Spatie). Migrating between enum libraries is churn with no user-visible benefit; pick one and stop.
  • Governance, security review, or long-term support obligations require maintained dependencies with a release history, CVE process, and multiple contributors. 43 stars and a 0.375 score do not clear that bar.
  • The enum values are business-configurable at runtime (per-tenant statuses, editable tax codes). That is a database/config problem, not a code-enum problem — a package will not solve it and may entrench the wrong model.
  • The needed features are genuinely trivial (one or two enums). A 20-line trait beats a dependency.
  • You require strict static analysis at high levels or specific serialization semantics; small packages often lag on phpstan/larastan coverage.

Evaluation gates before adoption: confirm PHP/Laravel version support matches your matrix, check the last commit and open-issue responsiveness, verify test coverage and whether tests run in CI, confirm the license, and prototype one real enum end-to-end (cast → validation → API resource → frontend) before committing.

How to Pitch It (Stakeholders)

For executives (30 seconds). This is a small utility that removes duplicated code around status values, roles, and categories — the dropdowns, badges, and validation messages users see every day. Adopting it is a low-cost, low-visibility efficiency play: it shortens delivery on admin and workflow features and reduces the class of bug where the UI and the database disagree about what "Active" means. The caveat is maturity — it is a young, lightly adopted project, so we would wrap it behind our own interface, pilot it on one module, and keep the swap cost to a single file. No customer-facing risk, no vendor contract, no infrastructure change.

For engineering leads. It is sugar over native PHP enums, not a new type system. The value is one place for labels, validation rules, casts, and serialization — replacing the config-array-plus-Rule::in pattern that drifts. The cost is a dependency with a single maintainer and modest adoption, which we mitigate with an internal base class, pinned version, and an explicit fallback to a ~50-line in-house trait. Recommend a two-sprint trial scoped to the admin module, with a go/no-go based on whether it actually eliminates boilerplate we would otherwise hand-write.

For design and product partners. Enum labels and colors become single-sourced, so copy changes and status-color updates ship faster and stop appearing inconsistently across screens.
