Installer Laravel Package

laravel-zero/installer

Installer for Laravel Zero, the micro-framework for building standalone console applications. It scaffolds a fresh project so you can quickly create elegant PHP CLI tools using a familiar Laravel-style structure and components.

Technical Evaluation

Architecture fit. laravel-zero/installer is a developer-workstation scaffolding CLI, not a runtime library. It is the equivalent of laravel/installer for the Laravel Zero micro-framework: a globally installed Composer binary that creates a new Laravel Zero project, resolves the skeleton, runs dependency installation, and produces a runnable console application. It has no place in a production dependency graph and should never appear in require for a deployed service. Its only architectural fit is as a convenience wrapper in a standardized developer bootstrap workflow for teams that have already decided to adopt Laravel Zero for internal CLI tooling.

Integration feasibility. Feasible but low-leverage. The installer is a thin layer over what is already a one-line command (composer create-project laravel-zero/laravel-zero <name>). The incremental value is ergonomics — command naming, version resolution, and post-install setup — not capability. Integration effort is measured in minutes for a single developer, but the real decision is whether to adopt Laravel Zero as a framework, not whether to adopt this installer.

Technical risk. Low blast radius, non-trivial governance risk:

  • Dev-machine-only execution means a failure does not touch production, but global Composer installs execute third-party code and pull from Packagist.
  • 22 stars and a 0.35 score indicate minimal independent community scrutiny. The package lives under the Laravel Zero organization and is MIT-licensed, which mitigates but does not eliminate supply-chain concern.
  • Version drift between the installer and the Laravel Zero skeleton/framework is the most likely source of breakage.

Key questions.

  • Is the installer versioned in lockstep with Laravel Zero major releases, and what is the supported matrix?
  • Does it pin the skeleton version, or pull latest — i.e., is project creation reproducible?
  • Can it operate in air-gapped or mirrored-Packagist environments, and does it support --no-install / offline flags?
  • What is the maintainer bus factor, and is there a documented deprecation path if the package is abandoned?
  • Could an internal, version-pinned template repository replace it entirely?

Integration Approach

Stack fit. PHP 8.x and Composer 2 are the only prerequisites. This aligns cleanly with any existing Laravel shop; there is no new runtime, no new infrastructure, and no language surface to learn. Laravel Zero itself is a stripped Laravel, so component familiarity carries over.

Migration path. Two viable paths:

  1. Adopt the installer as-is — recommend only if Laravel Zero is already an approved framework and developers want a familiar new command.
  2. Skip the installer, standardize on an internal template — a version-pinned composer create-project target (or an internal Composer repository) gives the same outcome with explicit control over the skeleton version, post-install scripts, and CI scaffolding. This is the recommended path for organizations that need reproducibility or auditability.

Compatibility. Constraints to verify before committing: minimum PHP version enforced by the current Laravel Zero major; Composer 2 requirement; behavior on Windows (the generated app binary and permission handling are common friction points); and coexistence with other globally installed Composer binaries.

Sequencing.

  1. Decide on Laravel Zero as a framework first — this installer is downstream of that decision.
  2. If adopted, trial the installer in a sandboxed developer environment against the target PHP version.
  3. Codify a pinned, reproducible scaffolding path (internal template or pinned installer version) and document it.
  4. Retire ad hoc scaffolding scripts and update onboarding docs.
  5. Establish a review cadence tied to Laravel Zero major releases.

Operational Impact

Maintenance. Negligible runtime maintenance — nothing to patch in production. Upstream maintenance is small-surface but volunteer-driven; expect updates to land with framework releases rather than on an independent schedule. Pin the installer version in onboarding tooling to avoid surprise breakage.

Support. Community-only, no SLA. The maintainer pool behind Laravel Zero is small, and this package in particular has low community gravity (22 stars). Plan for self-support: internal owners should be able to read the source (it is small) and fall back to create-project if the installer breaks. If enterprise assurance is required, evaluate commercial Laravel support coverage rather than relying on this package.

Scaling. Scaling is not a runtime concern; it is a reproducibility concern. As the number of teams and generated projects grows, "pull latest skeleton" behavior becomes an operational liability — different developers will scaffold subtly different projects. Mitigate with a pinned template or internal Composer mirror, and cache dependencies in CI.

Failure modes.

  • Installer/skeleton version mismatch producing a broken generated app.
  • Packagist outage or network restriction blocking project creation.
  • PHP version drift between the installer's constraints and the developer's local runtime.
  • Conflicts with other globally installed Composer binaries or stale global vendor directories.
  • Post-install script failures (key generation, app binary permissions, directory structure).
  • Silent behavioral changes when upstream releases a new skeleton without a corresponding installer bump.

Ramp-up. Near zero for anyone with Laravel experience — the command is self-explanatory and the framework conventions are the actual learning curve. Documentation is thin and largely inherited from the Laravel Zero docs. Budget onboarding time for Laravel Zero patterns (command structure, service providers, testing), not for this installer.

Overall TPM judgment. Treat laravel-zero/installer as a thin developer-convenience tool, not a strategic dependency. It is safe to trial, trivially reversible, and adds little beyond composer create-project. The decision that matters is Laravel Zero adoption; if that is approved, prefer a version-pinned internal scaffolding path over depending on a low-adoption installer for reproducibility and supply-chain hygiene.
