Messagebird Laravel Package

laravel-notification-channels/messagebird

MessageBird notification channel for Laravel. Send SMS notifications through MessageBird’s API using Laravel’s native notification system. Configure your access key and originator, then deliver messages with a dedicated notification class.

Product Decisions This Supports

  • Channel strategy for SMS/OTP in Laravel apps: If SMS is a secondary channel (transactional alerts, 2FA codes, delivery updates) and your stack is already Laravel Notifications, this package lets you ship SMS as a via() channel without building a MessageBird/Bird API client. It answers "do we build or wire up an existing driver?" in favor of wiring.
  • Vendor selection between SMS providers: This package is a forcing function for a real comparison. It only makes sense if MessageBird (now Bird) wins on price, deliverability, or geographic coverage versus Twilio, Vonage, SNS. Adopt the provider first, then the driver — never the reverse.
  • Roadmap sequencing: Adding SMS to a notification-heavy product is a low-effort increment (hours, not sprints) once a driver exists. That makes it a good candidate for a "quick win" slot rather than a roadmap line item.
  • Build vs. buy on integration glue: The package is a thin adapter over the MessageBird SDK exposed through Laravel's notification contract. The decision is really "do we own ~100 lines of adapter code that we must test and maintain, or do we take a dependency with a small install base and no meaningful dependents?" The v4.4.0 release (Laravel 13.x compatibility, contributed via Laravel Shift) is a positive maintenance signal — the package is being kept in the framework's support window — but one compatibility bump is not the same as independent production validation. For most teams the honest answer still leans toward owning it unless you're already standardised on this channel.
  • Multi-channel notification architecture: Using this keeps SMS consistent with mail, database, and Slack channels — one Notification class, one via() array. That has downstream value for templating, user preferences, and per-channel opt-outs, which is often the real product requirement behind "we need SMS."
  • Framework upgrade planning: v4.4.0 means SMS notifications are not a blocker on a Laravel 13 upgrade path. If you are sequencing a framework upgrade, this removes one small "will our notification channels survive?" risk item from the checklist.
  • Not supported: rich messaging (WhatsApp, RCS), delivery webhooks, inbound SMS, or Bird's broader Conversations API. If your roadmap includes those, this package doesn't carry you there.

When to Consider This Package

Adopt when all of the following hold:

  • Laravel is your framework and you are already using the Notification system (not a bespoke messaging layer).
  • MessageBird/Bird is your chosen or existing SMS provider — a signed contract, existing account, or a specific coverage/pricing reason.
  • You need outbound transactional SMS only: OTP, alerts, receipts. No inbound, no WhatsApp, no voice.
  • You can tolerate a community-maintained driver: verify the current release actually targets your Laravel and PHP versions, and read the source before merging. It is small enough to audit in one sitting. As of v4.4.0 the package tracks Laravel 13.x, so current-version projects are covered — but confirm the PHP constraint in composer.json rather than inferring it from the changelog.
  • You have a fallback plan: because the adapter surface is tiny, forking or inlining it is cheap if maintenance lapses.

Look elsewhere when:

  • You need more than SMS. Bird's Conversations/WhatsApp/Voice APIs require the vendor SDK directly; this package won't abstract them.
  • You want a first-party, well-trodden path. laravel-notification-channels/twilio or Vonage have materially larger install bases and community scrutiny. Provider choice should lead.
  • Your team can absorb the code. Forty lines of an inline custom channel, tested with your own fakes, removes a dependency entirely and eliminates the "will this be maintained?" question. Even with recent compatibility releases, the package remains essentially unproven in production at scale.
  • Deliverability, throughput, or compliance is core to the product — you'll want direct SDK control over retries, status callbacks, and sender ID rules, not a thin via() wrapper.
  • You're on a Laravel version outside its tested matrix. v4.4.0 covers Laravel 13.x, but low-traffic packages drift between bumps; check the CI matrix and the last commit date, not just the latest tag.

How to Pitch It (Stakeholders)

To executives: This is a small, MIT-licensed connector that adds SMS as a notification channel in our Laravel app for essentially the cost of configuration. It preserves our existing notification architecture, so SMS ships alongside email and in-app alerts without new infrastructure, and the latest release (v4.4.0) keeps it compatible with current Laravel versions — so it won't hold up a framework upgrade. The strategic caveats are unchanged: it locks SMS delivery to one vendor (MessageBird/Bird) and is community-maintained with minimal adoption, so treat it as a tactical shortcut, not platform infrastructure. Exit cost is low: the adapter is thin enough to replace or fork in under a day.

To engineering: A NotificationChannel implementation that maps Laravel's toMessageBird() payload to the MessageBird SDK. It's a convenience layer, not an abstraction — it does not normalize across providers, add retries, or handle inbound/webhooks. The v4.4.0 changelog contains only a Laravel 13.x compatibility PR: no new features, no breaking changes, no API surface movement, so upgrading from v4.3.0 is low risk and requires no code changes on our side. Audit the source (small enough to read fully), pin the version, wrap it in our own test double, and keep the provider client behind an interface so swapping drivers is a config change rather than a refactor. Do not extend it for WhatsApp or Voice; use the Bird API directly for those.
