Bookmark Laravel Package

laravel-interaction/bookmark

Laravel Interaction Bookmark adds bookmarking to any Eloquent model via a simple trait. Users can bookmark posts, comments, or other records, with toggle, count, and query helpers. Polymorphic, configurable, and easy to drop into existing Laravel apps.

Product Decisions This Supports

  • Build vs. buy for engagement primitives. Likes, reactions, bookmarks, follows, subscriptions, and votes are commodity features that appear in nearly every consumer-facing roadmap. This package is a candidate to replace an in-house "engagement" table/module, freeing engineering capacity for differentiating work.
  • Feature scoping: reaction/engagement layer. Supports decisions on whether to ship a generic, multi-type interaction system (one polymorphic model that can like, bookmark, subscribe, vote) versus point solutions (likes, bookmarks tables) that tend to proliferate and require separate APIs.
  • Roadmap sequencing. Because interaction types are pluggable, a PM can sequence engagement features incrementally (ship likes → add bookmarks → add subscriptions) without re-architecting the data model. This lowers the cost of deferring later engagement features.
  • Cross-surface reuse. A single polymorphic interaction layer can serve posts, comments, products, courses, and user profiles, which affects decisions about which surfaces get engagement affordances in a given quarter.
  • API/product surface decisions. Counter and "has interacted" queries shape what the frontend can cheaply display (counts, toggle state, "who liked this"), which influences UX choices around social proof.
  • Platform consolidation. If multiple product areas are independently building their own like/save mechanics, this is a lever for reducing duplicated schema and inconsistent behavior.
  • Version 1.0.0 specifically: the first stable, semver-committed release is the decision point at which adoption becomes defensible for production roadmaps. Pre-1.0 adoption carries API-churn risk; 1.0 signals the maintainers intend stability, which is the threshold most PMs should require before committing a roadmap dependency to it.

When to Consider This Package

Consider it when:

  • You need polymorphic interactions across more than one model (e.g., a user can like a post, a comment, and a product) and want one consistent mechanism rather than N bespoke tables.
  • You expect to support multiple interaction types over time and want to add them without schema migrations per type.
  • Your stack is Laravel/Eloquent-native and you value convention-driven, low-ceremony integration over a standalone service.
  • Your scale is moderate and database-backed — reads are dominated by counts and existence checks that fit comfortably in MySQL/Postgres with proper indexing.
  • You want to avoid maintaining engagement plumbing yourself, and the team's time is better spent on domain logic.
  • You are starting greenfield or have a contained surface where retrofitting is cheap and rollback is easy.

Look elsewhere when:

  • You need very high write throughput or real-time counters (millions of interactions/minute). A Redis- or event-stream-based design, or a dedicated service, is a better fit; a database-backed Eloquent package becomes a bottleneck and a scaling project.
  • You need social-graph semantics (followers, mutuals, feed fan-out). That is a distinct problem domain; interaction records alone don't model graph traversal or ranking.
  • You need ranked/algorithmic feeds or recommendation — the package stores interactions, it does not rank content.
  • You require auditability, moderation workflows, or compliance-grade retention out of the box; you will be building those on top.
  • Your team cannot absorb a third-party dependency (security review, long-term maintenance risk, or a hard policy against community packages). Note that 1.0.0 is a stability milestone, not a guarantee of maintainer continuity — check release cadence, issue responsiveness, and whether the maintainer has a track record.
  • You only need one trivial interaction type on one model. A single likes table may be less total complexity than adopting and learning a general abstraction.

How to Pitch It (Stakeholders)

For executives: Engagement mechanics — likes, saves, follows, votes — are table stakes in our category, and we keep paying for them repeatedly across surfaces. This package is a mature, Laravel-native component that gives us those mechanics in days instead of weeks, with a stable 1.0 API. It converts a recurring build cost into a maintained dependency, and it lets us add engagement features incrementally without re-platforming. The ask is small: adopt it behind a thin internal abstraction so we retain the option to swap it out.

For engineering: It's an Eloquent-native polymorphic interaction layer — one model, pluggable interaction types, conventional relationships and counter queries. It fits our existing conventions, requires no new infrastructure, and 1.0.0 means we can pin to a semver-major and reason about upgrades. Key caveats to validate before we commit: query performance and indexing on high-cardinality counter lookups, the migration path if we already have bespoke like/save tables, and the maintainer's release cadence. Recommended posture: wrap it in our own service/repository boundary so call sites don't depend on package internals directly, pin the major version, and benchmark counts against realistic data volumes during the first integration. If those checks pass, this is a low-risk, high-leverage adoption; if counter performance or maintainer activity disappoints, the wrapper keeps exit costs low.

Decision requested: approval to adopt at 1.0.0 for [target surface], with a two-week integration spike to validate performance and migration cost before broader rollout.
