Log Viewer Laravel Package

laravel-admin-ext/log-viewer

A log viewer extension for laravel-admin that brings Laravel log files into your admin panel. Browse and filter logs by level and date, inspect entries, and manage files through a clean web UI instead of digging through storage/logs by hand.

Product Decisions This Supports

  • Build vs. buy for internal ops tooling. This is a scope question, not an architecture question: a log viewer is ~a day of internal work or a free MIT package. The real decision is whether "let support read logs" is a feature worth owning at all, or a distraction from core roadmap.
  • Who gets to see production truth. Adding a log surface to the admin panel is a product/policy decision about exposing raw runtime data — stack traces, request payloads, SQL, sometimes tokens and PII — to non-engineering staff. That gate (RBAC role? environment-gated? redaction?) is the actual decision this package forces.
  • Support tiering and MTTR. If support/first-line ops can triage production.log without an engineer SSH-ing into a box, you cut time-to-diagnosis and interrupt load. This package is a cheap probe of whether that workflow is worth standardizing.
  • Where observability lives on the roadmap. Choosing an in-admin log viewer is an implicit "no" (or "not yet") to Sentry / Datadog / Papertrail / CloudWatch. That trade-off — free and shallow vs. paid and queryable/alertable — belongs in the roadmap conversation, not a PR.
  • Admin stack lifecycle. This extension only exists inside laravel-admin. Adopting it signals commitment to that admin framework (itself in maintenance mode); declining it is often the first step toward consolidating on Filament/Nova or an external tool.
  • Risk posture for dependencies. 128 stars, 0 dependents, last release 2021-10-11. That's a "vendor it and own it" signal, which is a portfolio decision about how much unmaintained third-party code you tolerate in production.

When to Consider This Package

Consider it when all of these hold:

  • You are already running laravel-admin and are not replacing it this cycle.
  • The panel is internal, staff-only, and ideally environment-gated (staging, or production behind a privileged role).
  • Logs are on local disk (single server or shared volume) — not ephemeral container filesystems.
  • You want a working viewer in under a day and have no budget or appetite for a log aggregator.
  • Compliance obligations are light; you can accept manual redaction and no audit trail out of the box.
  • You treat it as vendored code you may fork and patch, not a maintained dependency.

Look elsewhere when:

  • You're on Laravel 10/11+ — compatibility with the laravel-admin line is unverified and the package has been dormant since 2021.
  • Logs aren't on local disk (Kubernetes, Lambda, multi-node, ECS) — you need centralized logging, not a file reader.
  • You need alerting, retention policy, structured search, or correlation with traces — that's Sentry/Datadog/CloudWatch/Grafana Loki territory.
  • You have SOC 2 / HIPAA / GDPR exposure where unredacted logs in a web UI is a finding, not a convenience.
  • You need maintained security patching, or you're standardizing on Filament/Nova.
  • Customer-facing or partner-accessible admin surfaces.

How to Pitch It (Stakeholders)

To executives: A free, MIT-licensed log viewer that plugs into our existing admin panel in hours rather than weeks. It lets support staff triage incidents themselves instead of waiting on an engineer, which shortens time-to-resolution and reduces interrupt load on the team. The catch is maturity: the package hasn't shipped a release since 2021 and has essentially no downstream adoption, so we should treat it as a small internal utility we may fork — not a strategic dependency. Recommendation: pilot it in staging with a hard cap on investment and a clear exit path if we move off laravel-admin or adopt a real observability platform.

To engineering: It's a thin UI over Laravel's log files rendered inside laravel-admin. Integration cost is low, but we must add three things ourselves before it touches production: authorization middleware / role gating, log redaction for secrets and PII, and an audit trail of who viewed what. Pin the version and vendor the code — assume no upstream fixes. If we're containerized or multi-node, this doesn't solve our problem and we should stop here and evaluate centralized logging instead.
