Technical Evaluation

What this actually is (and isn't). The evidence package presents three conflicting identities for the same artifact: the package name lara-zeus/rain, the repository lara-zeus/dynamic-dashboard, and a bundled description that reads like a Livewire table/form builder. The only release note is a single line: "add support for filament 5." As a TPM, treat the identity as unresolved until a source inspection confirms it. This is not a documentation nit — if it's a dashboard compositor, the road map value is "configurable role-scoped summary views," a genuine buy candidate. If it's a table/form builder, it overlaps Filament's native table system, the build-vs-buy math inverts, and we should inline rather than adopt.

Architecture fit. The plausible fit is a Filament plugin that composes dashboards from configurable widgets (per panel, per role, possibly per landing page). That maps cleanly onto a common need: role-scoped admin summary screens and user-arrangeable dashboards. The in-house alternative — widget registry, layout persistence, per-role visibility, defaults/reset, responsive layout edge cases — is 2–3 weeks of undifferentiated plumbing. That is the strongest argument for a spike. It is not an argument for adoption; the fit is only as good as the verified product identity.

Integration feasibility. Installation is Composer-first with publishable config, migrations, and assets — conventional and low-friction. The real feasibility gate is version alignment: 5.0.0 exists solely to add Filament 5, which almost certainly drops Filament 3/4. If we're on Filament 3 or 4, this is not "add a plugin," it's a stacked major upgrade (Filament + Livewire + Tailwind + this plugin) in one change, where defect attribution becomes guesswork and rollback is ambiguous. Feasible in ~1–2 engineering days on a scratch branch; the cost is gated entirely by our current Filament major.

Technical risk. Ranked:

  • Identity risk (highest). We may be evaluating the wrong product.
  • Adoption risk. 16 stars, 0 dependents, solo maintainer. Unproven in production anywhere. No evidence of a CI/test suite.
  • Cadence risk. Releases chained to Filament majors, meaning a forced package major on every Filament bump. Our upgrade calendar becomes coupled to Laravel + Filament + this plugin.
  • Surface risk. Admin panels sit on auth and data-mutation paths. A widget/layout editor accepting user-supplied labels, class names, or query strings is a privilege-escalation vector if not treated as untrusted input.
  • Authorization risk. Do not assume the package wires Filament policies or panel scoping. Widgets that query Invoice::all() are not magically role-scoped.
  • Asset pipeline risk. If shipped Tailwind classes aren't in our compiled CSS, widgets render unstyled with no error — a classic "looks broken, logs are clean" afternoon.
  • Data anomaly. Last-release date is listed as 2026-04-16, in the future. Worth a sanity check on release provenance before trusting the version boundary.
  • Support risk. MIT, no LTS, no security backports, no support contract. If this becomes business-critical, we are self-supporting.

Key questions to answer before any road map commitment:

  1. From README.md + composer.json in vendor/: is this a dashboard compositor or a table/form builder?
  2. What are the exact PHP / Laravel / Filament / Livewire constraints, and which Filament majors does 5.0.0 support?
  3. Does it ship a public rendering path, or only admin authoring? (Landing-page delivery is a different problem: caching, SEO, anonymous users, editorial workflow.)
  4. Does it respect Filament policies and panel access, or must we gate widget registration ourselves?
  5. What is the actual public surface — service provider + plugin class + config? (For a package this size, reading the source is the documentation.)
  6. What is the diff between the 4.x and 5.0.0 config keys, and are any removed keys silently misconfigured in our published config?

Integration Approach

Stack fit. Assumes Laravel + Filament 5 + Livewire + Tailwind. Zero-fit if Filament is absent or peripheral — in that case the analysis ends. Adjacent Lara Zeus packages are ecosystem-complementary but not required.

Migration path. Sequence strictly: (1) resolve the identity question from source; (2) if we're on Filament 3/4, upgrade Filament first and stabilize; (3) only then add this package in a separate PR. Never combine the Filament major and the plugin adoption — that pairing destroys rollback clarity.

Compatibility. Pin with a tested ceiling rather than a floating range ("^5.0.3", not ^5.0 / 5.*). With zero dependents there is no crowd to surface a broken patch release; we are the canary. Commit composer.lock and let CI run against it. After any upgrade, diff the previous published config/rain.php — stale keys are silent misconfiguration.

Sequencing (concrete):

  1. Diligence (½ day, non-negotiable). composer show -a lara-zeus/rain, install on a scratch branch, read composer.json, service provider, plugin class, config, migrations, shipped views. Confirm product identity and version constraints.
  2. Spike (1–2 days). Register on one non-production panel only. Build one real screen — three stat cards, one chart, one recent-records list, scoped to a role. That single smoke test exercises registration, routing, authorization, and asset loading.
  3. Own the seam. Wrap widget definitions in an app-owned class (e.g., DashboardWidgets::for(User $user)) so package class names don't leak into 40 call sites and there's a clean swap/fork point.
  4. Own the data shape. Persist layouts in our own dashboard_layouts / widget_settings tables (user_id, panel, payload json), not in whatever schema ships — that's the export path if we migrate off.
  5. Scope per panel explicitly in our own register() so a widget cannot leak onto a panel it wasn't intended for.
  6. Decide against the measured spike, not against the star count.
  7. If adopted: pin, seeder-based default layouts per role, two integration tests we own (panel boots + 200 for permitted user; 403 for unpermitted), and a written fork path.

Keep the landing-page path out of the spike. Authoring lives in the admin panel; public rendering happens on a public route, usually from a JSON layout column. Different problem, different risk profile, and possibly not what this package solves at all.

Operational Impact

Maintenance. Recurring, not one-off. Every Filament major likely forces a package major; our upgrade calendar becomes a three-way dependency (Laravel, Filament, package) with a solo maintainer upstream. Record this as a standing line item in the dependency budget, not a launch cost. Mitigations: exact pinning, the app-owned widget registry seam, and a rehearsed "repositories": [{"type": "vcs", ...}] fork procedure documented in the adoption PR.

Support. None available. No LTS, no backports, no contract, no visible test suite. Reading and debugging vendor source will be part of normal operation — for a package this small that's tractable, but it must be budgeted as engineering time rather than assumed away. If the dashboard becomes business-critical, we are the maintainer of last resort.

Scaling. Two distinct concerns. Query amplification: six widgets × N+1 inside each yields a slow, memory-hungry admin page that nobody profiles because "it's just the dashboard." Wrap widget data loading in Cache::remember() keyed by user/role/date bucket, and use withCount/with aggressively in any record-listing widget. Asset/CSS scaling: publish views and include them in tailwind.config.js content globs, or run the package's own build — otherwise widgets render unstyled with clean logs.

Failure modes and detection.

Failure Symptom Detection
Version skew (Filament 3/4) Install conflicts, or stacked-upgrade defects composer.json constraints, scratch-branch install
Stale published config Removed key silently ignored Diff published config after upgrade
Widget leaks across panels Internal data on public/non-admin page Explicit panel-ID guard + 403 test
Authorization not wired Widgets show data beyond role scope Gate registration ourselves; permission test
Tailwind not compiled Widgets unstyled, no error Content globs / package build
Query amplification Slow admin page, high memory Profiling, cache, eager loading
Unpatched package vs. new Filament Widgets blank / Livewire exceptions swallowed storage/logs/laravel.log, dd() in vendor source

Blank-widget debug order: config:clear → component name vs. registration → Tailwind content globs → Laravel log for swallowed Livewire exceptions.

Ramp-up. Low for a Laravel/Filament-fluent engineer — Composer install, publish, register plugin, read source. Budget roughly ½ day diligence, 1–2 days spike, and 35–40% of that again for the hardening work (seam, own schema, tests, seeding, pinning) that makes the dependency safe. The ramp-up cost is not the install; it is the ownership scaffolding around a package with no crowd behind it.

Recommendation posture. Time-boxed evaluation, not a commitment. The buy case is real if the need is conventional dashboard/widget composition and building it ourselves is genuinely 2–3 weeks. The case collapses if the source reveals a thin registration wrapper — or a table builder — either of which we can inline behind our own DashboardWidgets seam in a few hundred lines. If public landing-page delivery is the actual driver, defer: a plugin is the wrong layer for caching, SEO, and editorial workflow, and a headless CMS is the cheaper long-run answer.
