Nova Signature Laravel Package

lab404/nova-signature

Nova Signature adds a drawable signature pad field to Laravel Nova resources. Users sign with a mouse, finger, or stylus and the result is saved as an image on your model, with configurable pad options for a smooth signing experience. Simple to install and customize.

Technical Evaluation

Architecture fit

  • Narrow-scope package: a single Laravel Nova field that adds a signature-capture canvas to a Nova resource form. It is not a signature service, audit system, or document-signing platform.
  • Fit is conditional on the application already running Laravel Nova. In a non-Nova Laravel app, or a SPA/API-first architecture, the package provides essentially nothing reusable — the underlying JS signature-pad behavior would need to be rebuilt.
  • Because Nova is a paid, first-party admin panel, this package is a presentation-layer add-on. It does not touch domain logic, queues, storage abstractions, or APIs, which keeps architectural blast radius small but also means there is little to evaluate beyond field compatibility.

Integration feasibility

  • Low-to-moderate effort for a Nova 2/3 codebase: composer require, register the field class in a Nova resource, add a matching database column, and persist the captured signature (typically base64 or an uploaded image).
  • Primary blocker is version compatibility. Last release was 2020-01-29, which predates Nova 4 (Vue 3 / Inertia-based frontend) and its field API changes. Assume incompatibility with Nova 4+ until proven otherwise in a spike.
  • The repository has 14 stars and zero dependents — no ecosystem evidence of active use, no downstream projects to infer compatibility from, and no community pressure to keep it current.

Technical risk

  • Abandonment risk: high. No releases in roughly five years; no maintainer activity signal. Treat as effectively unmaintained.
  • Upgrade risk: high. Nova field components are tightly coupled to Nova's frontend contracts. A Nova major upgrade will likely break the field, and there is no upstream fix path.
  • Compliance risk: medium-to-high. Signatures are personally identifiable and often legally significant. The package provides capture only — no timestamping, signer identity binding, document hash, consent capture, retention policy, or tamper evidence. ESIGN/eIDAS/GDPR obligations would sit entirely with the integrating team.
  • Data-handling risk: medium. If signatures are stored as base64 in a text column, row sizes grow, backups bloat, and rendering raw base64 in views invites XSS if not escaped.
  • Low supply-chain risk: small dependency surface, but that is small comfort given the maintenance gap.

Key questions

  1. Which Laravel and Nova versions are in production, and is a Nova upgrade planned within the next 12–18 months?
  2. Is signature capture a regulatory requirement (ESIGN, eIDAS, HIPAA, internal policy) or a UX nicety? This determines whether an audit trail is mandatory.
  3. Where must signatures live — database, object storage, or an external e-signature provider (DocuSign, Dropbox Sign)?
  4. What is the retention and deletion policy for signature images, and who owns compliance sign-off?
  5. Is a maintained alternative available (e.g., a current Nova signature field, or a generic signature-pad JS library wrapped in a custom field)?
  6. Would a two-day in-house Nova field be cheaper and safer than adopting and forking this package?

Integration Approach

Stack fit

  • Requires Laravel + Nova + Composer. The field is used declaratively inside a Nova resource's fields() method, alongside a migration for the storage column.
  • Best fit: an internal admin tool on Nova 3 where signatures are collected for acknowledgements, receipts, or internal approvals — not customer-facing contract execution.
  • Poor fit: API-only backends, headless architectures, or any flow where the signature must be captured outside Nova.

Migration path

  • No migration from another system is implied; this is greenfield field adoption. The practical migration is the exit path: keep the field isolated behind a resource-level abstraction so it can be swapped for a fork or a custom field without touching domain code.
  • If signatures already exist elsewhere, plan a one-time backfill into the chosen column/storage and reconcile format (PNG base64 vs. file path).

Compatibility

  • Verify against a compatibility matrix before committing: PHP version, Laravel version, Nova major version, and the frontend build (Nova 4's Vue 3 stack is the likely breaking point).
  • Pin the package to an exact version and commit the lockfile. Do not allow floating constraints on an unmaintained dependency.
  • Check the bundled JS signature-pad library version for known CVEs and browser compatibility (pointer events, high-DPI canvas scaling).

Sequencing

  1. Discovery (1–2 days): confirm Nova version, compliance requirements, storage target, and whether a maintained alternative exists.
  2. Spike (2–3 days): install in a staging branch, render the field, capture and persist a signature on desktop and mobile, verify Nova upgrade behavior if applicable.
  3. Decision gate: adopt as-is, fork internally, or build a minimal custom field. Given the age and zero dependents, default toward fork-or-build unless the spike is clean and scope is non-critical.
  4. Implementation: migration, field registration, validation (server-side size/format checks), storage abstraction, and access controls on the signature files.
  5. Hardening: escape output, set upload/request limits, add retention job, and document the fork ownership.

Operational Impact

Maintenance

  • Requires an explicit internal owner. Budget for a fork: vendor the package into the repo or a private Composer registry, pin it, and treat upstream as dead.
  • Recurring cost is low in steady state but spikes at every Nova/Laravel major upgrade, when the field's frontend component will need porting.
  • Track the bundled JS dependency separately; that is where security patches will actually matter.

Support

  • Community-only support via GitHub issues with a stale backlog. No vendor, no SLA, no security disclosure process.
  • Internal documentation must cover field behavior, storage format, and the fork procedure, since no external docs will stay accurate.

Scaling

  • Signature images are small (tens of KB) but numerous; base64-in-database is the main scaling hazard. Prefer object storage with signed URLs and store only the path in the database.
  • Watch request payload limits and PHP post_max_size if signatures are submitted inline with the form.
  • Nova admin traffic is low-concurrency by nature; this package will not be the scaling bottleneck. The database blob pattern will be.

Failure modes

  • Nova upgrade silently breaks the field's Vue component (blank canvas, failed submit).
  • JS asset load failure or CDN unavailability leaves an unusable form field.
  • Oversized base64 payloads exceed column limits or request body limits, causing truncated or rejected saves.
  • Mobile/touch canvas rendering issues produce blank or distorted signatures.
  • Missing server-side validation allows arbitrary base64 or malformed image data into storage.
  • Rendered signature data unescaped creates an XSS vector in admin views.
  • Legal challenge: captured signature lacks timestamp, signer binding, and tamper evidence, undermining enforceability.

Ramp-up

  • Low for any developer already fluent in Laravel and Nova custom fields — the package is small and conventional.
  • The real ramp-up is organizational: establishing fork ownership, compliance review, and an upgrade runbook. Estimate one to two days of engineering onboarding plus compliance sign-off time.
  • TPM recommendation: adopt only for non-critical, internal Nova 3 use cases with a committed internal fork. For regulated signatures or Nova 4+, budget a short custom-field build instead.
