Model Laravel Package

kyzegs/model

A compact Laravel package for working with Eloquent models. It provides reusable model helpers and sensible defaults that reduce boilerplate, streamline common query and attribute tasks, and keep your application's models clean, consistent, and easy to maintain.

Product Decisions This Supports

  • Roadmap / build-vs-buy triage: v0.1.0 is effectively a first public cut — a package rename plus Laravel 10 compatibility. There is no feature surface, documentation, or adoption signal here to justify a build-vs-buy decision in either direction. Treat this as a watchlist item, not an input to a committed roadmap.
  • Ecosystem currency check: The only substantive signal is explicit Laravel 10 support. That tells us the maintainer intends to track current framework versions, but nothing about Laravel 11/12 readiness, PHP version floor, or deprecation policy — all of which matter if we are standardizing on a framework version across the estate.
  • Feature discovery (speculative): The package name (model) suggests an Eloquent/domain-model concern, but the release notes do not describe behaviour. No product decision should be made from the name alone; a short engineering spike is the correct next step if the domain area is on our roadmap.
  • Vendor/OSS dependency register: Any decision to adopt would add a dependency with a single contributor, a v0.x version number, and no stated support window. That is a supply-chain entry, not a capability decision.

When to Consider This Package

Adopt only if all of the following hold after due diligence:

  • A concrete product requirement exists in the domain this package addresses, and we have confirmed the actual behaviour from source and tests — not from the release notes.
  • The package has accumulated meaningful version history beyond v0.1.0, a documented public API, and a stated compatibility matrix (Laravel and PHP versions).
  • The maintainer has demonstrated a maintenance cadence (multiple contributors, issue triage, security response) and the licence is compatible with our distribution model.
  • We can pin the version and absorb the maintenance ourselves if upstream goes quiet — i.e. the surface area is small enough to fork or reimplement.

Look elsewhere when:

  • The need is core Eloquent behaviour — Laravel's first-party model, casting, and relationship features should be the default, with a package only for a genuinely missing capability.
  • We require an SLA, security disclosure process, or long-term support commitment; a v0.1.0 with one contributor cannot provide these.
  • The capability is small enough that an in-house trait or small internal package is cheaper than an external dependency over a 2–3 year horizon.
  • We are standardizing on a Laravel version not yet declared as supported.

How to Pitch It (Stakeholders)

Executives: A Laravel package called model published its first release (v0.1.0). It contains no new capability — only a rename and added Laravel 10 support. It is not a candidate for adoption today. Recommendation: no action, no budget, no roadmap change; we keep it on the ecosystem watchlist and revisit only if a matching product requirement appears and the package matures.

Engineering: v0.1.0 is a first cut: package rename (PR #1) and Laravel 10 support (PR #2), from a single first-time contributor. No changelog history, no documented API, no stated support policy, no evidence of test coverage in the notes. If the underlying problem space is relevant to current work, spend a bounded spike (half a day) reading the source and writing a throwaway integration; do not add it to a production composer.json until it has a stable API, a compatibility matrix, and a second maintainer or a credible maintenance record. If the spike shows the capability is thin, plan to implement it internally rather than take the dependency.
