Voting Bundle Laravel Package

kunstmaan/voting-bundle

KunstmaanVotingBundle adds reusable voting and rating features to Symfony applications, including entities, services, and templates for casting and tallying votes. Lightweight but low-maintenance; verify compatibility before use.

Product Decisions This Supports

  • Build vs. buy for a "vote/like-gate" campaign mechanic. The bundle encodes a working data model for a common growth feature: users vote (on-site or via Facebook Like) toward a campaign with a deadline, and every vote is persisted. Use it to scope the feature — entities for votes, campaigns, and vote sources — rather than to ship it.
  • Roadmap framing for social-proof / engagement features. Useful as a checklist of requirements you'll need regardless of implementation: per-campaign deadlines, automatic campaign shutdown, vote-source attribution (site vs. external network), and an audit trail for fraud review.
  • Fraud and irregularity handling as a first-class requirement. The "backlog of votes" concept is the strongest product idea here: retaining raw vote records so you can retroactively detect stuffing, then pausing or closing a campaign. That informs whether you budget for an admin/moderation surface.
  • Sizing a campaign engine as a small, contained component. Low entity count and a clearly bounded domain make it easy to argue this is a 1–2 sprint internal build rather than a platform investment.
  • Not a viable dependency decision. At 14 stars, zero dependents, and a last release of April 2014, it provides no signal about whether the feature is worth building — only about how it was once built.

When to Consider This Package

  • Rarely, and only as a reference implementation. Read the source to steal the schema and campaign-lifecycle logic; do not composer require it into a new product.
  • Disqualifying factors in almost every case: last release 2014-04-10 (no PHP 7/8 or modern framework support), zero dependent packages (no production validation, no community to answer questions), 14 stars (no maintenance surface), and it is a Symfony bundle — it assumes Symfony's bundle/Kernel and Doctrine wiring, so it is not a drop-in for a Laravel application. Adapting it would cost more than writing the equivalent from scratch.
  • Security and compliance exposure: Facebook Like-based vote verification relies on Graph API assumptions from ~2014 that no longer hold; shipping this would mean inheriting an integration that is already broken.
  • Look elsewhere (or build) when you need: authenticated one-vote-per-user enforcement, rate limiting, queue-based vote ingestion at scale, or any GDPR-grade handling of the social identity data this bundle touches.
  • Reasonable to consult when you are doing a historical comparison, migrating an existing Kunstmaan-based site, or need a quick mental model of campaign-with-deadline voting before a design discussion.

How to Pitch It (Stakeholders)

For executives: This is a 2014 open-source Symfony component for "vote or Like to participate" campaigns. It's not something we should adopt — it's unmaintained, has no downstream users, and targets an older framework and a Facebook API that no longer exists. But its design confirms the feature itself is small and well understood: campaigns with deadlines, recorded votes, and the ability to audit and shut down a campaign if votes look fraudulent. Recommendation: treat this as a design reference, budget one to two sprints to build it natively in our stack, and explicitly include vote-log retention and fraud review in scope — that audit capability, not the voting itself, is where the real product risk sits. Net: no licensing cost, no vendor risk, and a clearer path than trying to revive a decade-old bundle.

For engineering: Don't add the dependency — it's a Symfony bundle with no release since 2014 and no dependents, so framework compatibility and the Facebook Graph integration are both dead ends. Extract the domain model (campaign, deadline, vote record, vote source, audit log) and reimplement it against our own auth, rate limiting, and queueing.
