Fixtures Bundle Laravel Package

kunstmaan/fixtures-bundle

KunstmaanFixturesBundle adds flexible fixture loading to Symfony apps, letting you define test and demo data in YAML and load it via console commands, with support for ordering, dependencies, and clean database seeding.

Product Decisions This Supports

  • Fixture/seed-data strategy (build vs. buy): Informs whether we standardize demo, QA, and CI data loading on a declarative YAML format instead of hand-written seeders. YAML-authored fixtures lower the barrier for QA and content ops to maintain realistic sample data without touching PHP.
  • Framework fit decision (important caveat): Despite being catalogued as a "Laravel/PHP package," this is a Symfony bundle built around Doctrine fixtures and Kunstmaan's CMS entity conventions. For a Laravel shop, the real decision this supports is "do we port/adapt a Symfony fixture loader, or use native db:seed + model factories?" — and the answer is almost certainly native.
  • Demo/release readiness: If adopted in a Symfony context, it enables faster spin-up of reproducible demo environments for sales, stakeholder reviews, and onboarding — a real cost saver for content-heavy products.
  • CMS platform commitment: Because the bundle is coupled to Kunstmaan's node/block model, adopting it is effectively a down-payment on the Kunstmaan ecosystem. It should be evaluated as part of "do we adopt Kunstmaan CMS?" rather than as a standalone fixture utility.
  • Roadmap risk register: With 1 star, 0 dependents, and a low composite score, this belongs on the "do not build on" list — it is a signal to keep fixture tooling in-house or on a maintained, widely-used dependency.

When to Consider This Package

Consider it only when all of the following are true:

  • You are already running Symfony + Doctrine Data Fixtures, ideally on the Kunstmaan CMS stack.
  • Demo/test content authoring is a recurring, measurable cost, and non-PHP authors (QA, content ops) need to contribute fixtures.
  • You are willing to vendor or fork the bundle and pin it, given the near-zero community footprint.

Look elsewhere when:

  • You are on Laravel — use native database seeders and model factories; add fakerphp/faker for realistic data. This bundle offers no Laravel integration and would require an Eloquent adapter.
  • Maintenance and security posture matter — 0 dependents and a single star mean no ecosystem pressure-testing, no security review, and no guarantee of compatibility with modern PHP/Symfony versions.
  • You need CI-grade reliability, long-term support commitments, or a published security policy.
  • You need multi-database or non-Doctrine fixture loading.
  • You only need fixtures occasionally — the integration overhead outweighs the benefit versus a few dozen lines of seeder code.

How to Pitch It (Stakeholders)

For executives: We evaluated a YAML-based fixtures bundle for generating demo and test data. Recommendation: do not adopt. It is a Symfony/Kunstmaan-ecosystem tool rather than a Laravel package, and it has effectively no community adoption (1 star, 0 dependents) — meaning we would own its maintenance and security risk entirely. Our native Laravel seeding and factories already cover this need at zero added dependency cost. Where YAML-authored fixtures would genuinely help (faster, more realistic demo environments), we can capture most of the value with a lightweight in-house seeder convention at a fraction of the risk.

For engineering: The bundle wraps Doctrine fixture loading with a YAML parser, tied to Kunstmaan's entity and node conventions — not portable to Eloquent without a rewrite of the loader, which is unjustified for what amounts to a few hundred lines of seeder code. If we were on Kunstmaan CMS it would be a reasonable convenience, but with no dependents and no visible maintenance activity, we would need to vendor or fork it before trusting it in CI. Decision: skip for Laravel; revisit only if we commit to the Kunstmaan stack.
