Eloquentify Laravel Package

kobykorman/eloquentify

Eloquentify turns one custom SQL query with JSON-aggregated relations into fully hydrated nested Eloquent models, collapsing N+1 and R+1 round trips into a single query with zero configuration.

Product Decisions This Supports

  • Per-endpoint performance investment vs. platform rework: Eloquentify lets you decide where to buy down query overhead. Instead of a quarter-long data-access refactor, you pilot one heavy endpoint, measure round trips saved, and decide whether to expand. It turns a binary "rewrite the ORM layer" decision into a series of cheap, reversible bets.
  • Build vs. buy for a hydration layer: Teams routinely hand-roll raw SQL plus manual model mapping for nested API resources. This package is that glue, pre-built and MIT-licensed — a legitimate "buy" against 1–3 engineer-weeks of internal tooling plus its ongoing ownership.
  • Roadmap deferral: Collapsing R+1 round trips into one query can push out the need for a caching tier, read replica, or response-pagination redesign on read-heavy, deeply nested screens (list views, dashboards, exports, admin consoles). That is schedule you can reallocate to higher-value features.
  • Explicit ORM abstraction tradeoff: Adopting it means accepting raw SQL in the codebase in exchange for control over query shape. Making that tradeoff consciously (rather than by drift) is itself a product/architecture decision worth recording.
  • Feature feasibility: Enables nested, hierarchical responses at acceptable latency where per-relation eager loading would otherwise make the feature too expensive — useful for "show me everything" views that would otherwise be descoped.

When to Consider This Package

Good fit:

  • Laravel app with existing Eloquent models and well-named relation methods (the package derives its wiring from them — zero config is only true if your relations are already clean).
  • You have measured N+1/R+1 pain on specific endpoints. This is a fix for a profiled problem, not a default data-access pattern.
  • Your team is comfortable writing and reviewing raw SQL, and your target database supports the JSON aggregation the README demonstrates (PostgreSQL shown; confirm MySQL/SQLite parity against your stack before committing).
  • Read-dominant, hierarchically nested responses where you control the query.
  • You can tolerate and absorb dependency risk: 20 stars, 0 dependents, single maintainer, low overall score. Assume you may end up owning a fork.

Look elsewhere when:

  • Zero dependents is the headline risk. No production provenance means no external validation of edge cases, upgrades, or Laravel/PHP version churn. Not appropriate on a revenue-critical or compliance-sensitive path without a maintenance owner.
  • Portability across multiple databases is a requirement — the approach leans on database-specific JSON functions.
  • Your pain is better solved by cheaper, first-party means: eager-load pruning, preventLazyLoading in non-prod to catch regressions, relation-count caches, or narrower endpoint payloads. Try those first; they carry no new dependency.
  • The team is not SQL-fluent — this shifts complexity from the ORM to hand-written SQL, and the maintenance burden lands on whoever reads it next.
  • You need typed, IDE-navigable queries or strict static analysis across the data layer.
  • You cannot budget time to vendor/fork and track upstream, or you require a support contract.

How to Pitch It (Stakeholders)

To executives: A narrowly scoped, free (MIT) library that cuts database round trips on our slowest nested screens — typically the difference between a page making dozens of sequential database calls and making one. It requires no procurement, no vendor commitment, and no rewrite; it is applied per endpoint, so we can measure value on one screen before expanding. The honest caveat: it is a young project with a single maintainer and no known production adopters, so I recommend treating it as a tactical accelerator, isolating it behind our data layer, and budgeting a small amount of engineering ownership.

To engineering: Add one trait to a base model, then write a single query that aggregates each relation into a JSON column named after the relation method — the package returns fully hydrated, nested Eloquent models, so controllers and resources keep the Eloquent API they already use. It is opt-in per query, so adoption is incremental and reversible. Costs: raw SQL enters the codebase, behavior is database-specific, and we should add tests plus a fork plan given the low community footprint. Recommended next step: a spike on one high-traffic endpoint with before/after query counts and p95 latency as the decision gate.
