Phone Number Laravel Package

Product Decisions This Supports

  • Feature scoping for admin-side data capture. If a roadmap item involves collecting phone numbers in Laravel Nova (customer records, leads, vendor contacts, manual order entry, support callback fields), this package is a candidate to satisfy the "validated, formatted phone input" acceptance criterion without a custom field build.
  • Build vs. buy at the margin. The scope is narrow — a Nova field that formats and validates phone numbers. The buy side saves roughly half a day to a day of engineering. The build side is a small custom Nova field wrapping a phone-number parsing library. This is a low-stakes decision, not an architectural one; the honest framing is "tactical utility," not "dependency."
  • Data-quality investment. If downstream work depends on normalized phone data (SMS/voice via Twilio or Vonage, CRM sync, dedupe/matching), enforcing format and validity at the admin boundary reduces garbage-in problems. Note that this package improves the entry point only; the durable decision is to store E.164 in the database regardless of which field component renders the input.
  • Back-office/ops tooling. Relevant to internal tooling decisions where the blast radius of a stale dependency is limited to staff-facing screens, not customer-facing flows.
  • Not supported: public-facing signup forms, growth/pricing/positioning decisions, or anything outside a Nova admin context. Nova is a paid Laravel admin panel, so the addressable audience is license holders only — this package carries no product-strategy weight.

When to Consider This Package

Adopt only when all of the following hold:

  • You are already on Laravel Nova (license paid) and can confirm version compatibility. The last release is 2021-11-24, which predates Nova 4 and 5 — verify against your Nova major before committing.
  • The use case is internal admin entry with low blast radius if the package breaks.
  • You accept ownership: 0 stars, 0 dependents, single maintainer, no release in over three years means treat it as unmaintained. MIT license makes forking or vendoring viable.
  • You have verified the pinned phone-parsing dependency supports your PHP version (8.2/8.3 compatibility is unconfirmed).

Look elsewhere — or build instead — when:

  • You are not on Nova. Use a Laravel validation rule plus a front-end phone input (e.g., intl-tel-input) backed by the standard phone-number library directly. This is the common case and this package does not apply.
  • You need a maintained dependency with security response, or your org requires supported/vetted packages.
  • You need capabilities beyond format + validate: carrier lookup, SMS/OTP verification, per-country UX nuance, or number portability.
  • You require Nova 4/5 support; absent a compatibility check, assume the build path (~1 dev-day) is cheaper than the integration and ownership risk.

How to Pitch It (Stakeholders)

To executives: This is a small, MIT-licensed admin-panel utility — a quality-of-life improvement for phone-number entry in our internal Nova screens. It is not a strategic bet and carries no license cost. Because the project shows no maintenance activity since 2021 and has no visible adoption, my recommendation is to treat it as source code we own: vendor or fork it if we use it at all, or spend roughly one engineering day reimplementing it. Either way, we should standardize phone storage on E.164 so the component choice is swappable later.

To engineering: It's a thin Nova field wrapping phone parsing/validation. Adopting it buys a day at most; the real cost is owning an unmaintained 2021-era dependency and validating compatibility with our Nova and PHP versions. Default recommendation: build the field ourselves against a maintained phone-number library, enforce E.164 at the model/validation layer, and keep the UI component disposable. If we do adopt, pin the version and vendor it.
