Belongs To Many Field Laravel Package

kayacekovic/belongs-to-many-field

Laravel package adding a belongs-to-many form field for attaching and detaching related models through a pivot table. Search, select, and manage associated records directly from the form without leaving the page, with customizable labels and query constraints.

Product Decisions This Supports

  • Build vs. buy vs. native, for admin tooling. The real decision here isn't "adopt this package" — it's "what's our default for extending Laravel Nova?" Third-party fields are cheap to try and expensive to own; this package is a test case for that policy.
  • Prioritizing admin UX work on many-to-many editing. Pivot-heavy models (products↔categories, users↔roles, posts↔tags) generate recurring "editing this relationship is painful" requests. A richer M2M field is a legitimate backlog input — but the candidate solution is "a better M2M field," not specifically this repo.
  • Setting a vendor-risk bar. With 0 stars, 0 dependents, and no community validation, this package is the low end of the spectrum. It's useful as a reference point for what we won't ship as a production dependency without forking.
  • Licensing/ownership posture. MIT means we can copy the source into our codebase and own it. That converts a dependency decision into an engineering-effort decision, which is usually the easier one to make.

When to Consider This Package

Consider it when:

  • You are already on Laravel Nova (paid license) and on the exact major version this targets — verify composer.json constraints and last commit date, not the README.
  • You've confirmed the native BelongsToMany field can't do what you need. The package is small enough to audit in one sitting; read the source before trusting the description.
  • The scenario is internal admin, low blast radius, and you're prepared to vendor/fork under MIT rather than depend on upstream maintenance.
  • A one-hour spike in a feature branch beats a design debate — installing it is the cheapest way to evaluate the UX.

Look elsewhere when:

  • You're not on Nova. Filament, Backpack, or a custom Blade component are the relevant comparisons; this is dead weight.
  • You need forward compatibility with Nova 5+. Zero dependents means nobody has proven it survives an upgrade.
  • You want issue triage, docs, or a maintainer who answers. There is no evidence any of that exists.
  • Native BelongsToMany already covers it — the most likely outcome. Default to native and treat this as a UI reference only.

Treat the score (opportunity 23.47, 0 dependents) as a demand signal: no one has validated this need. If we adopt, we're the first adopter — that's product R&D, not procurement, and should be scoped and staffed accordingly.

How to Pitch It (Stakeholders)

To executives: Low priority, low cost, no commitment required. This is not a strategic dependency and shouldn't enter a vendor review. If better many-to-many editing is on the admin roadmap, this repo is a code sample we may borrow — MIT-licensed, small, auditable — not a vendor we onboard. The zero-adoption profile means the only acceptable production posture is forking the source and owning it, which caps downside at a few engineering hours.

To engineering: We already ship Nova's native BelongsToMany field. Before writing anything, run a one-hour spike: install in a branch, diff the behavior against native, check Nova/Laravel version constraints and the last commit. If it's clearly better, vendor the source into our repo and own it. If not, close the ticket. Do not add it as a composer dependency in production — with 0 dependents there's no evidence anyone has run this through an upgrade.
