Helpers Laravel Package

jtc-solutions/helpers

Getting Started

Because jtc-solutions/helpers has zero stars and zero dependents, treat it as an internal/unvetted utility belt rather than a community standard. Start by reading the source before wiring it into anything.

  1. Install and inspect the manifest first

    composer require jtc-solutions/helpers

    Then open vendor/jtc-solutions/helpers/composer.json. Look at two things: the autoload block (does it load a global helpers.php file, a PSR-4 namespace, or both?) and any extra.laravel.providers entry. That tells you whether helpers are global functions, static class methods, or facades.

  2. Where to look first

    • src/ — the actual helper implementations. Scan class names and method signatures; this is your real API reference since docs are likely thin.
    • src/helpers.php (or similar) — global functions, if autoloaded via files. These are the ones you'll call most in Blade and legacy code.
    • Any config/ directory — check whether it's publishable (php artisan vendor:publish --provider="JTC\Helpers\..."). Config-driven helpers (formatters, defaults) usually hide quirks here.
  3. First use case The classic reason to reach for a helpers package is collapsing verbose Str::/Arr::/Carbon chains into a single call inside controllers, models, and Blade. Pick one repetitive pattern in your codebase (e.g. money formatting, slug generation, null-safe array access) and replace it with the package equivalent. Verify output against the original in a tinker session before committing:

    php artisan tinker
    >>> jtc_format_money(1234.5) // or whatever the actual function is

Implementation Patterns

Global function calls in Blade and legacy code. If the package autoloads a functions file, its main value is terseness in templates and older procedural code where importing a class is noisy. Wrap calls in your own Blade component/directive if you want to centralize them, so a future package swap is a one-line change.

Static utility calls in services and actions. Prefer the namespaced static class form (Jtc\Helpers\Str::something()) in application code. It's discoverable via IDE autocomplete, greppable, and immune to the global-function collision problem below.

Adapter/wrapper pattern for anything load-bearing. Given the package's maturity level, don't scatter its API across 40 files. Create a thin App\Support\Helpers facade or service that delegates to the package. You keep the concise call sites, but you can swap the implementation, add caching, or patch a bug without touching call sites.

Composition with existing Laravel APIs. Helper packages usually complement, not replace, Str, Arr, and Collection. Use package helpers for the gaps and keep framework-native calls for everything they already cover — mixing both arbitrarily makes onboarding harder.

Testing pattern. Add a small characterization test suite that asserts the package helpers behave as you expect:

public function test_money_helper_formats_expected(): void
{
    $this->assertSame('$1,234.50', jtc_format_money(1234.5));
}

With 0 dependents and no community test coverage, these tests are your regression net when you upgrade.

Gotchas and Tips

Global function collisions. The single biggest risk with files-autoloaded helpers is a name clash with another package or your own app/helpers.php. PHP will fatal on redeclaration. Grep before install:

grep -rn "function jtc_" vendor/ --include=*.php

and check for function_exists() guards in the package source.

Zero dependents means zero battle-testing. Audit version constraints in composer.json against your Laravel version. A package last touched before Laravel 10/11 may still install (due to loose constraints) but call removed framework APIs. Pin the exact version in composer.json ("jtc-solutions/helpers": "1.2.*" style) so a silent patch release can't change behavior under you.

Autoload cache. After install or upgrade, run composer dump-autoload and php artisan config:clear — helper files entries are baked into the Composer autoloader and new functions won't appear until the dump runs.

Config quirks. If the package publishes a config file, check for values that default to env() calls. Those break under php artisan config:cache. Move any env-dependent defaults into your own config/ and reference them there.

Extension points. Most helper packages expose either (a) a service provider you can extend, (b) static classes you can subclass, or (c) nothing at all. Before building on top, confirm which. If it's (c), wrapper adapters are mandatory.

Debugging. Global helper functions don't appear in stack traces with useful class context and won't show in IDE "find usages" without the package indexed. When a helper misbehaves, dd() inside vendor/jtc-solutions/helpers/src/... temporarily, or better, reproduce the logic in tinker against the package method directly before blaming your call site.

Fork discipline. For a package this small and this unsupported, keep a note of the exact upstream commit you depend on. If it goes stale, a local fork under a VCS repository entry in composer.json is cheaper than waiting for maintenance — which is also a fair argument for copying the handful of helpers you actually use into app/Support/ instead of taking the dependency at all.
