Iban Validation Laravel Package

jschaedl/iban-validation

A Laravel/PHP package for validating International Bank Account Numbers (IBANs). It provides a validator rule and direct IBAN checks to ensure account numbers are correctly formatted and checksum-valid before storage or payment processing.

Product Decisions This Supports

  • Build vs. buy for payment input validation. IBAN validation looks trivial ("just check the checksum") but is really a moving table of country-specific BBAN formats, lengths, and mod-97 rules. This package lets you buy that maintenance for the price of one MIT dependency instead of owning a hand-rolled regex and its edge cases.
  • Payment feature scoping. Any roadmap item touching SEPA direct debit, SEPA Instant, payouts, or vendor/supplier bank-detail onboarding needs IBAN structural validation as table stakes. This package answers "how much work is the validation layer?" with "a Composer require, not a sprint."
  • Checkout and onboarding conversion. Invalid or mistyped IBANs surface as failed mandates, rejected transfers, and support tickets days after signup. Pre-submit validation shifts that failure to the form, which is measurable in failed-payment rate and support contact rate.
  • Data hygiene in back-office flows. Imports of vendor/customer bank details from CSV, admin edits, and migrations can be gated on a structural check before records hit the payments pipeline.
  • Vendor-evaluation framing. Adopting this makes explicit that structural validation is not account verification. That distinction is a real product decision: it tells you whether you still need a verification vendor (name/account matching, Open Banking, micro-deposits) for payout and refund flows.
  • Scope guardrail for stakeholders. Because it only confirms an IBAN is well-formed and checksum-valid, it should never be pitched internally as fraud prevention or KYC. Documenting that boundary prevents a costly misunderstanding later.

When to Consider This Package

Adopt when:

  • You have a PHP 8.x codebase and need lightweight, framework-agnostic structural IBAN validation with no service provider, config, or database footprint.
  • Licensing matters and MIT is acceptable (it is, for essentially all commercial use).
  • Your need is genuinely structural: form validation, import gating, pre-flight checks before handing off to a payment provider that does the real verification.
  • You want to wrap it in a Laravel custom validation rule behind your own interface, so the dependency is swappable.

Look elsewhere or apply extra diligence when:

  • Maintenance risk is material. ~104 stars and a single-maintainer profile means bus factor and country-table freshness are the real risks, not code quality. The recent release (2025-12-02) is a positive signal; confirm how country format data is updated and whether tests cover the countries you operate in.
  • You need more than yes/no. If you need IBAN parsing, BBAN extraction, BIC/bank-name lookup, or IBAN generation, globalcitizen/php-iban is the more established option with a broader surface.
  • You want zero third-party code. Symfony Validator ships an IBAN constraint; if you're already in that ecosystem, the marginal value of a separate package drops.
  • You need real account verification. No open-source validator confirms an account exists or belongs to the stated holder. For payouts and refunds, budget for a verification provider regardless of which validator you pick.
  • You need non-IBAN account formats (US ABA/routing, UK sort code + account number, local rails) — this package won't help, and pretending otherwise creates a two-tier validation experience.

How to Pitch It (Stakeholders)

To executives: This is a small, MIT-licensed PHP library that validates IBANs before they enter our payments pipeline. It removes a category of avoidable failed transfers and support tickets for roughly the cost of one dependency and a day of integration. It is low-risk: permissive license, recent release, no infrastructure or vendor contract. Important caveat — it checks that an IBAN is well-formed, not that the account exists, so it complements rather than replaces payment-verification spend.

To engineering: Pure PHP, Composer-installable, no framework coupling. Recommended integration is a thin Laravel validation rule wrapping the library behind our own IbanValidator interface, so swapping to php-iban or a vendor SDK is a one-file change. Two things to check before merge: test coverage for our operating countries, and how the country-format table is maintained upstream (single maintainer, ~100 stars is the main long-term risk).
