Chewie Laravel Package

joetannenbaum/chewie

Chewie generates a fake REST API from your Laravel Eloquent models, giving front-end and mobile developers realistic endpoints to prototype against. Relationships, pagination, and filtering work out of the box, with no custom controllers or seed data required.

Product Decisions This Supports

  • Build vs. buy for internal dev tooling. Chewie targets a recurring, low-glamour cost center: producing realistic, relationship-aware seed data for a Laravel app. The decision it informs is whether to spend engineering weeks hand-maintaining factories/seeders per environment or adopt a small dev-only dependency that does schema-aware data generation.
  • Environment strategy. If our staging, demo, and sandbox tenants are chronically stale or obviously fake, this is a candidate fix. It supports the roadmap question "do we invest in a credible demo/sandbox experience?" without committing to a custom internal platform.
  • Time-to-demo and sales enablement. Realistic data in a demo environment shortens the loop between a feature shipping and a rep being able to show it. That is measurable in days, not quarters.
  • QA and onboarding throughput. New engineers and QA get a populated database in one command instead of a 40-line manual seeding ritual, which reduces environment-setup friction — a real but usually unmeasured drag on ramp time.
  • Tooling standardization. A decision to bless one approach for dev fixtures across squads (vs. every team rolling its own) — this package is a cheap way to test that standardization before writing policy.
  • Not a production decision. Nothing here should influence runtime architecture, vendor contracts, or data-platform roadmaps; treat it strictly as a developer-experience line item.

When to Consider This Package

Adopt it for a spike if most of these hold:

  • We are on a current Laravel version with a large, relationship-heavy Eloquent schema where hand-written factories are the bottleneck.
  • The need is dev/staging/demo only — the package can sit in require-dev and never touch a production request path.
  • We can tolerate non-deterministic output (useful for demos, wrong for assertion-based tests).
  • Data governance allows schema/model metadata to leave our boundary, or we can point it at a local model. This is the gating question, not the star count.
  • We accept single-maintainer risk for a dev-only tool: ~122 stars, one author, last release Dec 2024. That is fine for a convenience dependency and disqualifying for anything load-bearing.

Look elsewhere when:

  • We need reproducible fixtures in CI — Faker with explicit seeds and hand-written factories remain the correct answer for deterministic tests.
  • Schemas contain PII-shaped columns or regulated data models where transmitting structure is a compliance review we do not want to run for a dev convenience.
  • The schema is very large or highly normalized; AI-generated rows often fail on constraint ordering and join integrity, and debugging that costs more than writing factories.
  • We need support SLAs, security review, or a maintained upgrade path (Laravel major bumps).
  • Our stack is not Laravel-first, or the team is small enough that a handful of factories already covers the need.

How to Pitch It (Stakeholders)

To executives: This is a small, isolated developer-productivity experiment, not a platform bet. It would let engineering and sales generate believable demo and staging data on demand instead of maintaining bespoke seeding scripts per environment. Cost is a one-time evaluation (roughly one to two engineer-days) plus negligible API spend, scoped to non-production. Risk is contained: dev-only dependency, removable in an afternoon, no customer data exposure if we keep it off production paths. Success metric is time-to-populated-environment and reduction in demo-prep hours; if it does not move those in a two-week trial, we drop it.

To engineering: Treat it as a require-dev convenience, spike it on one non-critical module, and compare the output against our existing factories on constraint correctness and re-run stability. Keep the factory fallback in place; do not let it leak into test fixtures or anything that needs determinism. Flag the maintenance profile up front — one maintainer, last release December 2024 — so nobody is surprised when a Laravel upgrade breaks it.
