Livewire Quill Laravel Package

joelwmale/livewire-quill

A Laravel Livewire component for the Quill WYSIWYG editor. Add rich text fields to Livewire forms, bind content with wire:model, customize the toolbar, and get clean HTML output without writing JavaScript.

Product Decisions This Supports

  • Rich-text editing in Livewire apps: A Quill-based WYSIWYG editor component lets you ship content authoring (articles, notes, descriptions, comments, CMS bodies) without hand-rolling a JS-to-Livewire binding layer.
  • Framework upgrade sequencing: v5.4.0's widened constraint (livewire/livewire: ^3.0|^4.0) means this package no longer blocks a Livewire 3 → 4 migration. That is a direct input to your upgrade roadmap and dependency-risk register.
  • Build vs buy: The build alternative is a custom Alpine/Quill wrapper plus wire:model sync, HTML sanitisation, and file/image upload plumbing — typically 1–3 weeks of engineering plus ongoing maintenance. Buying (adopting) is defensible for standard authoring needs; build only if you need bespoke editor UX, collaborative editing, or non-Quill tooling.
  • Platform standardisation: If multiple products need a text editor, standardising on one Livewire-native component reduces divergent implementations and support burden.
  • PHP runtime planning: The release notes confirm testing on PHP 8.2–8.5 (8.5 only paired with Livewire 4). Useful for pinning your supported PHP matrix and CI baseline.
  • Use cases supported: blog/CMS authoring, in-app documentation and release notes, support ticket and CRM notes, admin-configured email/message templates, product descriptions in commerce back offices.

When to Consider This Package

Adopt when:

  • Your application is Laravel + Livewire and you need a standard rich-text field bound to a model property.
  • You are on Livewire 3 or planning Livewire 4 — this release covers both, so adoption does not create an upgrade cliff.
  • Requirements are conventional: formatted text, links, lists, basic embeds. Quill's feature set covers this well.
  • You want a small, single-purpose dependency rather than a full CMS/editor framework.

Look elsewhere or build when:

  • You need collaborative/real-time multi-cursor editing, track changes, or document commenting — Quill core is not the right foundation.
  • You need deep customisation of the editor internals (custom blot-heavy schemas, non-HTML output formats) where a first-party wrapper gives no leverage.
  • You require guaranteed long-term vendor support, SLAs, or security patching commitments — this is a community package with a single primary maintainer.
  • Your stack is not Livewire (Inertia/Vue/React SPA) — use a native editor integration instead.
  • You need strict, opinionated HTML sanitisation guarantees; the package supplies the editor, not your content security policy. Plan server-side sanitisation regardless.

Due diligence before adoption: confirm the rendered output's XSS posture with your own sanitiser, check image/file upload handling against your storage rules, verify bundle size impact, and read the changelog across majors for prior breaking changes to gauge release discipline.

How to Pitch It (Stakeholders)

To executives: This is a small, focused open-source component that gives our Livewire application a production-grade rich-text editor out of the box. The new release adds Livewire 4 support and tests across PHP 8.2–8.5, which de-risks our upcoming framework upgrade and means we do not have to treat this dependency as a blocker. It replaces an estimated 1–3 weeks of custom engineering plus ongoing maintenance, at effectively zero licence cost. Principal risk is maintainer concentration in a single-person project — mitigated by the code being small and forkable, and by keeping our integration behind a thin internal wrapper.

To engineering: v5.4.0 widens the Livewire constraint to ^3.0|^4.0 and adds CI coverage for both major versions, with PHP 8.5 validated on Livewire 4 and PHP 8.2–8.4 on both. No breaking changes in this release; it is a compatibility expansion. Recommended integration: wrap the component in our own Blade component so we control props, sanitisation, and upload behaviour, and so a future package swap or fork is a one-file change. Add server-side HTML sanitisation before persistence — the editor does not guarantee safe output on its own. Pin to ^5.4 and let CI exercise both Livewire majors during the transition window.
