Php Credit Cards Laravel Package

jlorente/php-credit-cards

A PHP package for validating credit card numbers and detecting card brands using length checks, Luhn algorithm, and issuer patterns. Includes Laravel validation support, making it easy to reject invalid payment details and identify Visa, Mastercard, Amex, and more.

Product Decisions This Supports

  • Checkout conversion and payment-form UX. Brand detection (Visa/Mastercard/Amex/etc.), live formatting, and input masking are directly tied to fewer mistyped card numbers and lower cart abandonment. This is a low-effort lever for a measurable checkout-funnel metric.
  • Build vs. buy for card validation. Number validation, brand detection, and the Luhn check are commodity logic. Buying an MIT-licensed implementation avoids bespoke regex/Luhn code that inevitably drifts as card ranges change — a clear "buy/wrap, don't build" call.
  • Pre-flight validation before PSP calls. Catching invalid numbers and misdetected brands client- or server-side before hitting the payment processor reduces noisy API traffic, avoids avoidable decline codes, and improves success-rate dashboards.
  • Scope boundaries in the payments roadmap. This package validates format, not funds. It supports decisions about what stays out of scope: authorization, 3DS, tokenization, and BIN enrichment belong to the PSP (Stripe, Braintree, Adyen), not to this dependency.
  • Compliance posture. It processes raw card numbers transiently. That informs a decision to keep card entry on PSP-hosted fields wherever possible, and to treat any server-side use as PCI-scope-relevant.
  • Multi-brand and regional expansion. Supports the mainstream brands most roadmaps start with; if the roadmap includes UnionPay, JCB, or co-branded cards, flag that the supported-brand list may lag and needs a validation pass.
  • Dependency risk management. 45 stars and a small single maintainer means the PM decision is not "adopt or reject" but "adopt behind an interface" so it can be swapped without touching product code.

When to Consider This Package

Consider it when:

  • The stack is PHP/Laravel and you need lightweight, server-side card brand detection, number validation, Luhn checking, and formatting — nothing more.
  • You are building a custom card entry form (not PSP-hosted fields) and want consistent validation and display formatting on both the client payload and the server.
  • You want a framework-agnostic, MIT-licensed dependency with no runtime service, no vendor account, and no per-call cost.
  • You need masked display formatting for confirmations, receipts, and account screens.
  • You want a cheap first-pass filter in front of your PSP to cut obviously invalid submissions.

Look elsewhere when:

  • You use Stripe Elements / Braintree Hosted Fields / Adyen Components. The PSP already validates and tokenizes client-side; adding this server-side widens PCI scope for near-zero benefit.
  • You need BIN lookup, card type (credit vs. debit), issuer country, funding source, or 3DS — that is enrichment data this package does not provide.
  • You need tokenization, authorization, or fraud scoring — out of scope by design.
  • You plan to store or transmit PANs. This package does not make you PCI compliant, and storing raw card numbers should be rejected regardless of tooling.
  • Your compliance team requires a vendor with a support contract, SLA, or security review history. A 45-star community package likely fails procurement; the mitigation is isolation behind an internal adapter plus your own test suite, or reimplementing Luhn/brand tables in-house (~1–2 days of work).
  • You need guaranteed currency of card-range data. Verify the release cadence (last release 2024-10-08) against your brand coverage needs before committing.

How to Pitch It (Stakeholders)

To executives: This is a small, free, MIT-licensed library that handles the boring but error-prone part of payment forms — checking that a card number is well-formed and identifying the brand. It costs roughly a day of engineering to integrate and removes a class of self-inflicted checkout failures, which maps to conversion and support-ticket reduction. There is no vendor lock-in, no contract, and no per-transaction cost. The main caveat is that it is a small open-source project, so we would wrap it in our own thin interface: if it is ever abandoned, we swap it out without touching product code. It does not change our compliance obligations — card data still flows through our PSP's tokenization, and we would not store card numbers.

To engineering: Single-purpose, framework-agnostic Composer package. Use it strictly server-side and strictly before PSP tokenization, behind our own CardValidator interface so brand tables and validation rules can be replaced or extended. Do not log or persist the raw PAN — mask on the way in, and reuse its formatting only for display. Add contract tests around brand detection for the card types we actually accept, since the supported-brand list is finite and can drift. Keep an eye on release cadence; pin the version and review on upgrade. Roughly 1–2 days including tests, adapter, and a client/server parity check.
