Socialite Mailru Laravel Package

jhaoda/socialite-mailru

A Laravel Socialite provider for Mail.ru authentication. This package adds a Mail.ru OAuth driver so users can sign in with their Mail.ru accounts through Socialite’s familiar, simple API.

Product Decisions This Supports

  • Market-entry / localization for Russia and CIS. Mail.ru is one of the largest email and portal properties in the Russian-speaking internet, and "sign in with Mail.ru" is a familiar, trust-building entry point for users there. This package lets a Laravel product add that login option without bespoke OAuth work, directly supporting a decision to localize onboarding for RU/KZ/BY audiences.
  • Auth-provider matrix / roadmap scope. It answers a recurring roadmap question — "which social identity providers do we support, and in what order?" — with a cheap, reversible option for a high-value region. Because it slots into Laravel Socialite, it is a configuration-level addition rather than a new subsystem, which keeps it low-cost to pilot and easy to retire.
  • Build vs. buy for a thin integration. The package is essentially a single community OAuth2 provider class that plugs into Socialite's existing abstraction. The real build cost of replicating it is small (a provider class extending Socialite's base provider plus a service-provider registration). The decision is therefore less "buy vs. build" and more "accept a community dependency vs. vendor a fork we control" — a governance call, not an architecture one.
  • Reducing registration friction where Western providers are unreliable. In the Russian market, Facebook/Instagram are blocked or restricted and Google availability is uneven, so local providers carry disproportionate weight. Supporting Mail.ru can measurably improve sign-up conversion for RU-facing funnels compared with email-only or Western-only social login.
  • Use cases it fits: consumer apps with Russian-speaking or diaspora audiences — e-commerce, gaming, media/streaming, dating, travel, and B2C SaaS onboarding. It is not a fit for enterprise SSO, internal tools, or markets where Mail.ru has negligible share.

When to Consider This Package

Adopt it when:

  • You are on Laravel + Socialite and need Mail.ru login for an MVP or a regional launch on a short timeline.
  • Mail.ru represents a material share of your target audience's identity graph (validate with analytics or market research before committing).
  • You are comfortable pinning the version and wrapping it behind your own auth interface, so it can be swapped or forked without touching product code.
  • Your team accepts a small, community-maintained dependency (23 stars, no dependents, last release March 2021) for a low-risk, easily replaced integration.

Look elsewhere or build in-house when:

  • You actually need VK ID, not legacy Mail.ru OAuth. Mail.ru's parent rebranded to VK and has been consolidating consumer auth under VK ID. Confirm which endpoint your users' accounts actually authenticate against before adopting; if VK ID is the target, this package may be the wrong provider entirely.
  • Your security or dependency policy requires actively maintained, audited auth code. Zero dependents and a 2021 release are weak maintenance signals; a vendor fork you control may be the responsible choice.
  • You are not on Laravel/Socialite, or you need OAuth features this provider does not implement (e.g., PKCE, newer scopes, token-refresh semantics).
  • You operate under data-residency obligations. Russian 152-FZ localization rules affect where user personal data may be stored — an architectural and legal concern this package neither solves nor addresses.

How to Pitch It (Stakeholders)

To executives: This is a small, MIT-licensed connector that lets our Laravel product offer "sign in with Mail.ru" — a mainstream login in Russia and neighboring markets. It is a low-cost, low-lock-in enabler for a regional growth bet: it lowers sign-up friction for an audience where Western social logins are unreliable, and because it plugs into the auth framework we already use, we can pilot it in days and remove it just as quickly. The main caveat is maintenance: the package is tiny and thinly maintained, so the recommendation is to adopt it behind our own abstraction and validate that it targets the current VK/Mail.ru identity platform rather than a deprecated endpoint.

To engineering: Treat this as a thin community provider for Socialite — roughly one provider class plus registration. Pin the version, wrap it in our own auth adapter, add integration tests for the callback and token-exchange path, and document the fork/vendor option. Before build, verify the live OAuth endpoints and scopes against Mail.ru/VK's current documentation, since the 2021 release predates the VK rebrand and consolidation. Budget a small spike to confirm behavior in staging; if it drifts, vendoring the provider and owning it is preferable to depending on an unmaintained upstream.
