Laravel Firebase Sync Laravel Package

jgizinski/laravel-firebase-sync

Keep Laravel Eloquent models and Firebase Realtime Database in sync automatically. laravel-firebase-sync mirrors create, update, and delete events to Firebase, with configurable mappings and queued synchronization for reliable, real-time app data.

Product Decisions This Supports

  • Realtime feature delivery without new infrastructure. It lets Eloquent remain the system of record while Firebase Realtime Database acts as a read-optimized projection — a cheap way to ship live dashboards, chat/presence, activity feeds, collaborative editing surfaces, or push-refreshed mobile views without standing up your own WebSocket gateway (Pusher, Ably, Soketi) or a CDC pipeline.
  • Roadmap sequencing. It moves "realtime" from a quarter-long platform bet to a sprint-sized slice. You defer the event-driven sync service (queue + outbox + socket gateway) until write volume and consistency requirements actually justify it.
  • Build vs. buy — but the answer is "borrow." With a last release of 2016-06-20 and zero dependents, this is not a dependency decision; it's a reference-implementation decision. The underlying pattern (model observers → queued write → Firebase) is a few hundred lines. Budget a 1–3 engineer-day spike to fork and modernize, not a procurement cycle.
  • Fit-for-purpose use cases: internal tools, MVPs and pilot programs, single-tenant or low-write-volume apps, mobile clients that want Firebase's offline cache and SDK for free, and migrations away from polling-based refresh.
  • Explicit non-fits: any flow requiring transactional consistency between MySQL and Firebase, high write throughput or heavy fan-out, per-user security rules derived from your domain model, regulated data (PII/PHI) that cannot leave your primary datastore, or a Firestore-first Firebase strategy.
  • Due diligence flag: the package name (jgizinski/laravel-firebase-sync) and repository URL (mpociot/laravel-firebase-sync) disagree, which suggests a fork or transfer. Resolve provenance and license before anything else — this affects the "borrow" recommendation.

When to Consider This Package

Consider it when:

  • You are on a legacy Laravel 5.x codebase that already uses Firebase Realtime Database, and the cost of change exceeds the cost of ownership.
  • Only a handful of models need realtime propagation, and writes are low-volume (tens per second at most).
  • Eventual consistency measured in seconds is acceptable to the product — no read-your-own-write guarantees are promised to users.
  • Firebase is strictly a derived read replica; nothing authoritative ever lives only there.
  • Your team is willing to own a fork: pin it, vendor it, patch it, and add the queueing, idempotency, retry, and reconciliation the original never had.
  • You are running a spike to estimate the custom build — reading this code is faster than designing the observer/queue pattern from scratch.

Look elsewhere when:

  • You are on Laravel 8+ / PHP 8+. The 2016 release predates modern framework and SDK conventions; expect incompatibility with current kreait/firebase-php and Laravel's queue/broadcast APIs.
  • Your target is Firestore, Firebase Auth, or Cloud Functions rather than Realtime Database.
  • You need bidirectional sync, conflict resolution, or offline write-back from clients.
  • Data residency, compliance, or audit requirements forbid replicating records outside your primary database.
  • You need backfill, drift detection, or guaranteed delivery — the package provides none of these as first-class concerns.
  • Throughput, fan-out, or freshness SLAs exceed what a naive per-model write can deliver.

Adjacent options worth comparing: kreait/firebase-php used directly with a small observer layer; Laravel's native broadcasting with a managed driver; Supabase Realtime; or a CDC/outbox approach if consistency is the real requirement.

How to Pitch It (Stakeholders)

To executives: We can deliver realtime UX — live dashboards, presence, instant mobile updates — without adding a WebSocket vendor or building a sync platform. This package demonstrates the pattern cheaply, but it was last released in 2016 and has no downstream dependents, so we should not adopt it as a dependency. Recommendation: a one-week spike that forks the approach into ~300 lines we own, with a go/no-go gate on write volume and consistency needs. Upside is a sprint instead of a quarter; downside is contained to one engineer-week.

To engineering: Treat it as a design reference, not a library. The pattern is Eloquent model events → queued job → Firebase write. If we proceed, we own it: vendor and pin the code, move writes onto the queue, add idempotency keys, retry with backoff, a reconciliation/backfill command, and monitoring for drift. Firebase must be documented as derived state — never the source of truth — and we need an explicit consistency contract with the product team about how stale a realtime view may be. If any of those additions feel expensive, that's the signal to build it ourselves rather than inherit it.
