Product Decisions This Supports
- Build vs. buy for operational alerting: This package provides a ready-made, configurable email notification path for application exceptions in Laravel. A PM can treat it as the "known-good baseline" for error visibility rather than allocating sprint capacity to custom exception mailers, handler traits, and Blade email templates.
- Incident response and on-call readiness: Synchronous exception emailing gives a low-ceremony alerting channel for staging, internal tools, and lower-traffic production apps. Useful where a full APM/observability vendor (Sentry, Bugsnag, Datadog) is overkill or not yet budgeted.
- Feature and roadmap sequencing: The V5.0.0 install/update commands and non-destructive upgrade path lower the cost of adopting and maintaining the package, which supports scheduling this as a low-risk "platform hygiene" item rather than a dedicated migration epic.
- Branding and stakeholder-facing polish: The optional modern email layout with light/dark/system themes lets teams ship exception emails that look consistent with product branding and are readable on mobile — relevant if alerts are forwarded to shared inboxes or distribution lists seen by non-engineers.
- Upgrade decisions for platform modernization: The release confirms support for Laravel 9 through 13 with fixes for Laravel 9 mail delivery and PHP 8.4/8.5 deprecations. This informs whether the package remains viable during a framework or PHP upgrade roadmap, or whether it becomes a blocker.
- Risk and maintenance cost modeling: Automatic backups, rollback of newly created files on failed installs, and preservation of published config/mailers/views across Composer updates reduce the operational burden and blast radius of upgrades — a factor in total-cost-of-ownership comparisons against alternatives.
When to Consider This Package
Adopt when:
- You run a Laravel 9–13 application (Laravel 7/8 should pin
2.2.0; Laravel 6 or earlier 1.2.0) and want exception email notifications without building handler, mailer, and template plumbing in-house.
- Your alerting needs are modest: a shared inbox, a team distribution list, or a staging environment where email is sufficient.
- You want a low-effort setup with install/update Artisan commands, preserved customizations, and a documented upgrade path.
- You need branded, mobile-friendly, accessible alert emails — the modern layout with light/dark/system themes and the long-path mobile fix are directly relevant.
- You are mid-upgrade across Laravel or PHP versions and need a dependency that explicitly supports the transition (including Laravel 9's
build() API and PHP 8.4/8.5 deprecation fixes).
Look elsewhere when:
- You need high-volume, deduplicated, or rate-limited alerting; real-time dashboards; alert routing/escalation; or on-call scheduling — evaluate a dedicated observability/incident platform instead.
- Synchronous, in-request email sending is unacceptable for latency or reliability; this package does not register callbacks and reporting remains synchronous, so queued/asynchronous delivery would require custom work.
- You require first-class vendor support, SLAs, or a managed service.
- Your team cannot own manual follow-ups: already-published mailers and copied Handler traits require manual fixes, and older published config needs the
emailExceptionTheme key added.
- You are on Laravel 6/7/8 and need current features; you would be pinned to an old major.
How to Pitch It (Stakeholders)
For executives: This is a small, low-risk open-source dependency that gives our Laravel application a reliable way to email us when something breaks in production. The new V5.0.0 release makes installation and upgrades safer and more automated — it backs up our customizations, won't overwrite our existing setup, and adds a polished, mobile-friendly, dark-mode-capable alert email. It keeps pace with supported Laravel versions (9–13) and current PHP releases, so it won't become a roadblock during platform upgrades. Cost is engineering time only; no license or vendor contract. It is not a replacement for a full monitoring platform if we later need alert routing, deduplication, or on-call escalation — treat it as our baseline error visibility.
For engineering: Upgrade with composer require jeremykenedy/laravel-exception-notifier:"^5.0" then php artisan exception-notifier:update --no-interaction. The update command restores missing files and preserves existing configuration, mailers, and views; replacing a view requires --force plus a successful backup. Provider/facade names, config keys, content fields, publish tags, and view paths are unchanged, so this is a low-risk upgrade. Two caveats: previously published mailers and copied Handler traits need manual fixes, and older published config needs the emailExceptionTheme key added to use configuration-driven themes. Adopting the modern layout is opt-in (--layout=modern --theme=system --force), so defaults stay stable. Rebuild the config cache after config changes. Coverage is strong: 212 assertions across 18 Laravel/PHP combinations, Chromium tests for layout, theme, mobile/desktop, long text, and accessibility, plus lint and dependency audits.
