Teamkitv5 Laravel Package

jeffersongoncalves/teamkitv5

TeamKit v5 is a Laravel package for adding team management to your application, with tools for teams, memberships, roles, and invitations to help you build multi-user, team-based features faster.

Technical Evaluation

Architecture fit

  • teamkitv5 is a Laravel starter kit / application scaffold: team-aware auth, Filament admin panel, opinionated CI. It is consumed as a template or a composer create-project-style base, not as a runtime library. That framing drives every risk below.
  • 5.9.0 is a maintenance release with two distinct payloads: (1) routine dependency hygiene (Filament → v5.9.0, seven composer dev deps, Vite 8.3.0 → 8.3.1), and (2) one genuine architectural change — "Use user/admin packages for models, resources and login" (PR #152). Only the second matters to us.
  • PR #152 extracts the User model, Filament resources, and the login flow into separate user/admin packages, making the starter kit a thin composition layer over internal packages. Architecturally this is a sound direction (clear seam between framework base and domain-specific auth/UI), but it introduces a cross-repo dependency graph where previously there was a single flat tree. Our App\Models\User assumption — the most-referenced class in any Laravel codebase — is now mediated by a package namespace.

Integration feasibility

  • Filament v5.9.0 is a minor bump within an existing major; low risk if we are already on Filament 5. If any of our downstream work is still pinned to Filament 4, this release is not adoptable and the assessment should be parked until the rest of the stack catches up.
  • The CI work (#146–#151, #154) is not shipped code — it standardizes tests/changelog workflows and enables auto-merge for dependabot GitHub Actions minor/patch updates. Zero runtime impact, but it does mean this repo will accumulate dependency churn faster with less human review. That is a supply-chain governance consideration for us, not a code-quality one.
  • The real feasibility question is whether the new user/admin packages are published to Packagist with stable tags, or are VCS/path repositories. If path repositories, the starter kit cannot be consumed via a normal composer create-project without manual repository configuration — that would be a hard blocker for our scaffolding pipeline.
  • Technical risk is medium, concentrated in PR #152, and it is mis-signalled: a minor version bump carrying an ownership relocation of the auth model and login flow is, in practice, a breaking change for anyone who has already generated an application from 5.8.x and references App\Models\User or the previously in-app Filament resource classes.

Key questions

  1. Are the user/admin packages published and semver-tagged on Packagist, and are they versioned in lockstep with the starter kit?
  2. Do migrations, factories, seeders, policies, and Filament panel providers still ship from this repo, or now from the packages? Where does config/auth.php point the provider?
  3. Is there a published upgrade guide or codemod for existing scaffolds (namespace rewrites, re-published config, re-run install command)?
  4. Is App\Models\User retained as a subclass/alias for backward compatibility, or is it removed outright?
  5. What is the support window for the 5.8.x line, given the maintainer is a single individual and the repo now spans three packages?
  6. Filament 5.9.0 — does it carry any deprecations we inherit and must schedule?

Integration Approach

Stack fit

  • Assumes Laravel with Filament admin, Livewire-driven UI, Vite asset pipeline, PHP 8.x. Fits a greenfield internal-tool or admin-panel baseline; poor fit if we need a headless API skeleton, since auth/model ownership now routes through opinionated user/admin packages.
  • Because the kit is a starting point rather than a dependency, our "integration" is really a fork-and-generate event, and every release is a manual rebase against our fork. Stack fit here is about diff surface, not runtime coupling.

Migration path

  • From 5.8.4: treat as a structural migration. Steps: pin 5.8.4 as the control baseline; stand up a scratch 5.9.0 build; diff the auth surface (User model location, guard/provider config, login controller/Livewire component, Filament panel provider registrations, policies, factories, seeders); apply namespace rewrites to our fork; run the full suite plus a manual login/logout/password-reset/impersonation pass.
  • From Filament 4: not a migration path, a project. Defer.

Compatibility

  • Verify package-level composer.json constraints resolve cleanly alongside our other Filament plugins — the plugin ecosystem is the usual breakage point on a Filament bump, and PR #156 pulled seven composer updates simultaneously, widening the resolution surface.
  • Confirm the user/admin packages do not hard-pin a Filament minor, which would block our own plugin selection.
  • Frontend: Vite patch bump is inert; no rebuild risk.

Sequencing

  1. Spike a 5.9.0 scaffold in a throwaway repo; confirm install works end-to-end from a cold composer create-project (this alone answers the Packagist question).
  2. Diff the auth/panel surface against our 5.8.4 fork; size the rebase in engineer-days.
  3. Pilot on the lowest-traffic internal admin app, not the customer-facing one.
  4. Only then open the upgrade PR for our primary fork, with the login-flow smoke tests as the merge gate.
  5. Do not adopt the CI/auto-merge standardization into our fork until we have decided whether we want unattended dependabot merges in a repo whose dependency graph just tripled.

Operational Impact

Maintenance

  • Steady-state maintenance drops slightly (CI standardization, automated changelog, dependabot grouping reduce manual toil) but the blast radius of a bad release rises: three packages, one maintainer, auto-merged CI updates. We should assume we may need to pin and self-patch.
  • The auto-merge rule (#154) is scoped to GitHub Actions minor/patch, which is the lower-risk half — acceptable — but it sets a precedent worth watching.

Support

  • Single-maintainer project with no vendor SLA. Escalation path is GitHub issues. Budget for the possibility we own this fork outright.
  • Our support docs must be updated for the new model/resource namespaces, otherwise every internal onboarding ticket becomes a TPM question.

Scaling

  • Package extraction improves scaling of development (reusable user/admin across multiple kits) but adds a coordinated-release constraint: a fix to login now requires a package release plus a starter-kit bump. If the packages are monorepo-split, fine; if separate repos, we inherit version-skew bugs.
  • Nothing in 5.9.0 changes runtime performance characteristics. The Filament bump may shift admin-panel query patterns; re-run panel load benchmarks if we have large team/tenant tables.

Failure modes

  • Silent auth breakage: User model relocation with a stale config/auth.php provider yields a class-not-found at login, not at boot — caught only by an exercised login path, not by php artisan about. This is the highest-severity risk in the release.
  • Orphaned fork drift: if we skip 5.9.0 and the maintainer ships 6.x off the package architecture, our rebase cost compounds.
  • Dependency collision: Filament 5.9.0 plus seven composer updates landing together means a broken resolution is hard to attribute.
  • Unpublishable dependency: if user/admin packages are VCS-only, cold installs fail in CI and on new hire machines — a slow-burn productivity failure rather than a loud one.
  • Changelog opacity: the release notes are almost entirely dependabot and CI noise. PR #152 — the only substantive change — is one line with no upgrade guidance. We cannot rely on release notes as a risk signal for this project; we must read the diff.

Ramp-up

  • Low for anyone already fluent in Laravel + Filament; the package indirection adds maybe half a day of orientation ("why isn't User in app/Models?").
  • The upgrade work itself is a half-day to two-day task for one backend engineer on a single fork, gated on the cold-install verification. Recommend assigning it explicitly rather than absorbing it into routine dependency maintenance, precisely because the version number understates the change.
