Product Decisions This Supports
- Pricing & packaging experiments: products/prices list/get/create/update/archive gives PMs the primitives to test tiers, add-ons, and grandfathered pricing without waiting on billing engineering; archive (vs delete) supports lifecycle-safe retirement of SKUs.
- Subscription business model choices: cancel-now vs cancel-at-period-end, resume, and per-customer subscription listing directly enable cancel-save flows, win-back campaigns, pause/resume policies, and downgrade/upgrade journeys — decisions PMs typically want to A/B test quickly.
- Time-to-market for paid conversion: checkout session create/get/list/expire plus line items, and the billing portal session, let us ship a monetized MVP with hosted, low-liability surfaces instead of custom payment UI.
- Revenue operations & dunning policy: invoices (list/get/by-customer/pay/send/void) and payment intents (confirm/capture/cancel) support decisions on retry cadence, manual collection, B2B invoicing, and pre-auth/capture flows.
- Failure taxonomy and UX:
StripeException carrying Stripe's error body, code, type, and param allows precise decline messaging and segmentation of hard vs soft failures — an input to support-flow and conversion-optimization decisions.
- Event-driven roadmap bets: webhook signature verification (HMAC-SHA256, replay window, rotation-safe) plus events list/get/filter-by-type de-risk entitlement provisioning, usage triggers, churn signal capture, and dispute/fraud monitoring.
- Identity and account linking: find-customer-by-email informs decisions on multi-product accounts and trial abuse handling.
- Build vs buy: this is a "buy/integrate" move for commodity billing plumbing; engineering capacity is redirected to differentiated product work rather than Stripe HTTP scaffolding.
When to Consider This Package
Consider adoption when:
- The product is Laravel/PHP and Stripe is the billing provider (or the leading contender).
- The roadmap centers on subscriptions, checkout, self-serve portal, and invoicing — the covered surface — rather than exotic billing models.
- The team is small-to-mid and values typed errors and verified webhooks over rolling its own client.
- You want a thin, inspectable wrapper rather than a full billing platform.
Evaluate carefully before committing:
- Maturity risk — 1.0.0 is a first release with no track record. Check maintainer cadence, license, security disclosure process, and Laravel/PHP version support.
- Operational gaps you still own — webhook idempotency, event ordering, replay-window storage, retry handling, and Stripe API version pinning are not implied by signature verification alone.
- Testability — confirm HTTP faking/mocking ergonomics so billing paths are unit-testable.
- Coverage depth — verify support for metered/usage-based billing, tax, discounts/coupons, trials, proration, and entitlements if those are on the roadmap.
Look elsewhere when:
- You need processor abstraction (multi-PSP) or a system of record for billing — consider Laravel Cashier, or platforms like Lago/Metriport/Chargebee.
- You require first-class entitlements, revenue recognition, or tax compliance beyond Stripe's own surfaces.
- The stack is not Laravel/PHP, or policy mandates the official Stripe SDK with an in-house wrapper.
- You need a vendor with SLAs and a support contract.
How to Pitch It (Stakeholders)
Executive summary. This first release is a Laravel package that wraps Stripe's core billing objects — customers, subscriptions, products and prices, checkout sessions, the billing portal, invoices, payment intents, events — and hardens webhook signature verification with a replay window and key-rotation safety. In practice it turns billing plumbing into integration work: we can launch paid plans, run pricing and packaging experiments, and give customers self-serve upgrade, cancel, resume, and payment-retry paths without standing up a billing squad. Typed exceptions that surface Stripe's error code, type, and parameter mean better decline messaging and cleaner support triage from day one.
The honest caveat. This is a 1.0.0 with no production history. Treat it as a fast start, not a load-bearing dependency: pin the version, wrap it behind our own billing interface so we can swap implementations, and explicitly own webhook idempotency, event ordering, and Stripe API version pinning. Budget a short hardening spike before revenue-critical traffic.
Recommendation. Adopt behind an internal adapter for checkout, portal, and subscription management on the MVP path. Revisit the build-vs-buy decision if we move to multi-processor payments, usage-based pricing, or need entitlements and revenue recognition — those are the boundaries where this package stops helping and a billing platform starts.
