Laravel Optimizely Laravel Package

jeffersongoncalves/laravel-optimizely

Integrate Optimizely with Laravel using this package for feature flags, experiments, and A/B testing. It provides configuration and convenient helpers to evaluate decisions and track events in your Laravel applications.

Product Decisions This Supports

  • Build vs. buy for experimentation ops tooling. This package is a thin, config-driven wrapper over the Optimizely management API (projects, experiments, campaigns, audiences, events, pages). If your growth/experimentation team is currently considering a bespoke internal admin tool to manage experiments, this package lets you defer or avoid that build and instead ship a small internal Laravel surface on top of it.
  • Automating the experiment lifecycle. Create/update experiments, filter by status, and archive from code — this is the plumbing for CI- or schedule-driven ops: auto-provisioning experiment scaffolding from a template, auto-archiving stale experiments after a policy window, or syncing a roadmap tool to the experiment catalog.
  • Results ingestion into internal reporting. experiments->results and campaigns->results enable pulling outcomes into your own dashboards/warehouse jobs rather than relying solely on Optimizely's UI. This directly supports decisions about which experiment themes are producing wins, and whether to reinvest in the experimentation program.
  • Multi-project governance. Configurable default project plus per-page (per-call) override means one internal app can serve several brands/teams/projects without duplicating infrastructure — relevant if you're consolidating experimentation across business units.
  • Audience and targeting hygiene. Read access to audiences, events, and pages supports audit-style decisions: are audiences defined consistently, are events instrumented, are pages covered — the inputs to deciding whether to expand experimentation into a new surface.
  • Roadmap scoping for an experimentation platform team. The explicit, narrow API surface (list/get/create/update, no bulk, no webhooks visible) is a useful map of what automation is cheap today vs. what would require custom work — good input for sequencing an internal platform roadmap.

When to Consider This Package

Consider it when all of the following hold:

  • You are on Laravel/PHP and want experimentation management to live inside an existing app, admin panel, or artisan/queue-driven job rather than a separate service.
  • Optimizely is your committed experimentation platform — this is a management-API client, not a flag-evaluation SDK.
  • Your need is programmatic lifecycle management and results retrieval, not real-time decisioning. If you need runtime flag/variation evaluation in request paths, use Optimizely's SDKs (or this package alongside them, but not instead).
  • You want low integration cost: configuration via default project ID / base URL / per-call override, and a single OptimizelyException carrying the decoded error body so failures are debuggable in your existing logging.
  • Your scale is moderate and human- or schedule-paced (dashboards, nightly syncs, admin actions), not high-throughput transactional calls.

Look elsewhere when:

  • You are not on Optimizely, or are evaluating LaunchDarkly / Statsig / GrowthBook / GA4-based alternatives — the wrapper is Optimizely-shaped and offers no portability.
  • You need bulk operations, pagination guarantees, rate-limit/backoff handling, or webhook/event streaming — none of these are called out in this release, so assume you'd build them.
  • You need server-side flag evaluation or targeting decisions at request time — wrong tool.
  • You need a non-Laravel PHP integration or a language-agnostic contract; a generic HTTP client over the same API may be a better fit.
  • You require hardened, battle-tested dependencies in a revenue-critical path. This is a 1.0.0 initial release with no visible track record — treat it as early-adopter territory and wrap it behind your own adapter interface so you can swap it out.

Adoption caveats worth verifying before committing: authentication/credential handling, pagination behavior on list endpoints, rate-limit and retry semantics, and test coverage. These are unstated in the release notes and should be confirmed in the repo.

How to Pitch It (Stakeholders)

For executives. This is a small, low-risk integration that lets us automate how we run experiments on top of Optimizely — creating, updating, archiving, and pulling results — from our own systems instead of by hand in a vendor UI. The business value is operational: less manual toil per experiment, faster experiment turnaround, automatic cleanup of stale tests, and experiment results flowing into our own reporting so we can judge the program's return. Cost is modest — it's a thin wrapper, not a platform migration — and it doesn't lock us in further than the Optimizely contract we already hold. The main caveat is maturity: it's a brand-new 1.0.0 release, so we'd pilot it on internal, non-customer-facing workflows first.

For engineering. Narrow, single-purpose dependency: a config-driven client covering projects, experiments (including status filtering, results, archive), campaigns and results, audiences, events, and pages. Configuration is a default project ID, base URL, and per-call page override — so multi-project use is straightforward. Errors surface as one OptimizelyException carrying the decoded API error body, which keeps error handling and logging simple. It is not a runtime flag SDK — if we need evaluation at request time, we still use Optimizely's own SDK. Because it's a first release, we should (a) wrap it behind a thin internal interface so it's replaceable, (b) confirm auth, pagination, and rate-limit behavior before production use, and (c) pilot on back-office jobs — nightly results sync, stale-experiment archiving — where a failure is recoverable rather than customer-visible.
