jeffersongoncalves/laravel-faq
A Laravel package for adding a structured FAQ system to your application. It provides models, migrations, and management tools for organizing questions and answers by category, with a simple API for displaying FAQs in your app.
Architecture fit: The package is a domain-specific Eloquent extension: FAQ categories and Q&A entities with translatable fields, delegating translation storage to spatie/laravel-translatable. That is a clean fit for a Laravel app that already uses Eloquent and JSON-column translations, and it avoids introducing a parallel persistence or caching layer. However, it couples our content model to a third-party translatable contract — if we later move to a dedicated translation table or an external CMS, the entities require rework. Assess whether FAQ content is genuinely app-owned (marketing/support copy is often better served by a CMS) versus app-owned seed data.
Integration feasibility: Low-to-moderate. The hard dependency on spatie/laravel-translatable means we inherit its version constraints, its JSON column conventions, and its fallback-locale behaviour. Integration is mostly migrations + models + seeders, so it is feasible in a single sprint, but the migration must be reconciled with any existing FAQ tables or content already in production.
Technical risk:
spatie/laravel-translatable is a mature package but its major versions have changed APIs; the constraint here is pinned to whatever 1.0.0 supports, which may lag newer Laravel versions.Key questions:
spatie/laravel-translatable constraint?Stack fit: Appropriate if the target is a standard Laravel monolith on MySQL/Postgres with JSON support and an existing spatie/laravel-translatable install (or willingness to add one). It is a poor fit for multi-tenant setups where FAQ content is per-tenant unless the migrations are tenant-scoped, and a poor fit for headless/API-first architectures needing a content workflow (draft/publish/versioning), which this package does not appear to provide.
Migration path: Greenfield is trivial — publish migrations, run, seed. Brownfield requires: inventory existing FAQ storage, write a data-mapping script into the new category/question/answer tables, and preserve any existing IDs or URL slugs to avoid SEO breakage. Plan a dual-read or redirect period if FAQ pages are publicly indexed.
Compatibility: Verify Laravel version support against our current and next-upgrade targets, and confirm the spatie/laravel-translatable major version does not conflict with any other package already requiring a different major. Check JSON column support on our database engine (MySQL 5.7+/8, Postgres jsonb).
Sequencing:
Maintenance: Two moving parts — this package (v1.0.0, brand new, single release, unknown maintainer cadence) and spatie/laravel-translatable. Budget for periodic dependency bumps; a 1.0.0 with no track record means we should expect API churn and be prepared to vendor/fork if it goes stale.
Support: No community or documentation maturity at 1.0.0. Internal ownership must be assigned — a named engineer who can read the source, since the package is small enough to fork. Do not depend on upstream for bug turnaround.
Scaling: Read-heavy FAQ traffic is easy to cache (full-page or response cache per locale). Watch: JSON translation columns grow per locale, and locale-filtered queries degrade without generated columns or a translated-search index. If FAQ count stays in the hundreds, this is a non-issue; at tens of thousands with many locales, revisit with a proper translation table or search engine.
Failure modes:
faqs/categories tables.Ramp-up: Low for a Laravel-fluent engineer — the package is small and idiomatic; expect half a day to be productive, one to two days to be confident in the translation and migration details. The real ramp-up cost is the content migration and the missing-translation workflow, not the code. Recommend keeping the integration behind a feature flag for the first release cycle and pairing the rollout with a translation-coverage check in CI.
