Laravel Demio Laravel Package

jeffersongoncalves/laravel-demio

Laravel Demio is a clean integration for the Demio webinar platform, providing a fluent wrapper around the Demio API to create and manage webinars, register participants, track attendance, and automate event workflows directly from your Laravel application.

Technical Evaluation

Architecture fit

  • This is a thin, single-purpose SDK wrapper around the Demio webinar REST API. It slots in as a downstream adapter — no persistence, no domain model, no events/jobs of its own — so it composes cleanly with a hexagonal or service-layer Laravel codebase if we keep it behind our own WebinarGateway interface.
  • Config-driven (api_key, api_secret, base_url, timeout) matches Laravel conventions and keeps environment-specific values in .env, which is what we want for secret handling.
  • Surface area is small and legible: ping(), events(), event(), eventDate(), register(), participants(). That maps almost 1:1 onto the two workflows we care about — publish/sync webinar catalogue (read-only) and register an attendee (write, user-facing).

Integration feasibility

  • Very low effort to spike: install, publish config, drop credentials in, call ping(). A single engineer should reach a working read path in under a day.
  • The blocking dependency is not code — it's credentials and Demio account access (API key/secret provisioning, sandbox vs production account). Start that request on day one.
  • Greenfield: there is no prior assessment and no incumbent implementation to migrate away from, so this is a pure build decision.

Technical risk

  • Thin error taxonomy (highest risk). Only DemioAuthenticationException is defined for 401. Everything else — 400 validation, 404 missing event, 429 rate limit, 5xx, cURL timeout — presumably surfaces as an unwrapped GuzzleException or generic exception. We will have to build our own classification layer before this touches a user-facing registration flow.
  • No retry/backoff or idempotency story. register() is a write. Without retry semantics we must decide who owns duplicate-prevention and transient-failure recovery. Assume it is us.
  • Synchronous write path. register() called inline in an HTTP request adds Demio's latency to ours, with no circuit breaker. For a signup funnel this is a conversion risk, not just an availability risk.
  • Response typing unspecified. events() / participants() return shape (arrays vs collections, pagination handling) is undocumented in the release notes. Pagination on participants() in particular is a known trap for large webinars.
  • Maturity. 1.0.0 initial release — no track record. Bus factor and release cadence unknown.
  • PII surface. participants() returns attendee data; the package does not appear to touch storage, so retention/erasure obligations land entirely on us.

Key questions

  1. Which Laravel and PHP versions are supported (illuminate/support constraint)? Is the service provider auto-discovered and is there a facade?
  2. What is the exact auth scheme — HTTP Basic with api_key:api_secret, or a bearer token? How does credential rotation work?
  3. Beyond 401, what exception types are thrown for 4xx/5xx/429/network failure? Is there any response-body access on error?
  4. Does events() / participants() paginate, and are results returned as arrays, Collections, or DTOs?
  5. Is register() idempotent on the Demio side for a repeated email/event pair, or must we dedupe?
  6. Is there webhook support for attendance/join events, or is polling participants() the only option?
  7. Test coverage, CI, static analysis level, license, and named maintainer(s)?
  8. Is a Demio sandbox/test account available so we are not developing against production webinar data?

Integration Approach

Stack fit

  • Assumes a conventional Laravel app. The package contributes config, an HTTP client wrapper, and an exception — it will not conflict with our queue, cache, or auth layers.
  • Compatible with our existing HTTP egress path only if we standardise on Guzzle underneath, which Laravel's Http client already does. No new transport dependency expected.
  • Secrets go to .env / our secret manager, not config/demio.php in version control.

Migration path

  • None required — greenfield adoption. Sequence is additive: install alongside existing code, wire behind an internal interface, then optionally swap the implementation if the package stalls.

Compatibility

  • Pin the major version explicitly in composer.json. On a 1.0.0 with a thin API surface, breaking changes in minor releases are plausible; a caret constraint plus a lockfile is the minimum.
  • Confirm the Laravel version constraint before sprint planning — this is the single most likely reason the package is a non-starter, and it is a five-minute check.

Sequencing

  1. Week 0 — de-risk. Confirm Laravel/PHP constraint, obtain API credentials and sandbox access, verify service provider registration. Call ping() from tinker.
  2. Week 1 — read path. Wrap events() / event() / eventDate() behind WebinarCatalogue service. Add caching for event metadata (these change rarely and are read often). Verify pagination behaviour explicitly.
  3. Week 2 — write path, decoupled. Introduce a WebinarRegistrationService that dispatches a queued job calling register(). Implement our own exception classification (transient → retry with backoff; permanent validation → surface to user; auth → alert).
  4. Week 3 — reporting. participants() behind an internal adapter, with pagination and a polling schedule decided (align to how often we actually need attendance data).
  5. Week 4 — harden. Dashboards on error rate by status code, alerting on auth failures, runbook, and a documented exit path if we need to vendor the client.

Build-vs-buy note: the wrapper is ~6 endpoint methods over Guzzle. If any of the key questions above come back badly (no maintained releases, no pagination support, incompatible Laravel constraint), writing our own 200-line client is a credible fallback — and materially cheaper than working around a stale dependency.

Operational Impact

Maintenance

  • Low ongoing code maintenance, but non-zero ownership: we are responsible for the exception-classification layer, retry policy, caching, and pagination regardless of what the package provides.
  • Track upstream releases. A 1.0.0 with no stated support policy means we should assume we may need to fork or replace it within 12 months. Keep the internal interface in place so that swap is a one-file change.
  • Config drift is the most common operational bug: base_url and timeout should be set explicitly in every environment rather than relying on package defaults.

Support

  • Failures will surface as generic exceptions unless we wrap them, which makes triage slow and support tickets vague. Invest early in mapping Demio status codes to our own exception hierarchy with actionable messages.
  • Named owner required. Without one, "the webinar integration" becomes an orphan in roughly two quarters.
  • Document credential rotation and who can access the Demio account — 401s after a rotation are the single most likely 3am page.

Scaling

  • Per-call HTTP latency dominates. register() on the request path is the scaling hazard: during a launch/webinar push, concurrent registrations multiply latency and rate-limit exposure. Queue it.
  • participants() scales with attendee count. For large webinars this is a paginated, potentially slow call — never invoke it inline in a request, and cache or snapshot results.
  • Respect Demio's rate limits. We do not know them from the release notes; find out before load testing, and add a client-side throttle pre-emptively.
  • Horizontally, the package is stateless, so worker scaling is straightforward. No sticky-session or shared-state concerns.

Failure modes

  • 401 after rotation / misconfiguration — surfaces as DemioAuthenticationException; must page, since all webinar functionality stops.
  • Timeout — configurable timeout but no retry; a slow Demio response becomes our failed registration. Needs bounded retry with backoff and a dead-letter path.
  • 429 rate limit — likely unhandled; will manifest as registration failures under load. Client-side throttle + queue concurrency cap is the mitigation.
  • 5xx from Demio — unclassified; will look like an application bug. Requires explicit handling and an alert.
  • Silent registration loss — the worst case: user believes they registered, Demio has no record. Mitigate with a queued job, explicit failure notification, and reconciliation against participants().
  • Payload shape change upstream — no DTOs means changes propagate directly into our code. Add contract tests around the response shapes we depend on.

Ramp-up

  • Genuinely low: six methods, conventional Laravel config, ping() as an immediate smoke test. A mid-level engineer is productive in a day.
  • The real ramp-up cost is undocumented behaviour — error taxonomy, pagination, response shapes. Budget half a day of exploratory testing against a sandbox and write the findings down; that document is worth more than the package's README.
  • Recommend a short internal README covering: which methods we actually use, our wrapper interface, retry policy, and the escalation path for Demio-side incidents.
