Filakitv5 Laravel Package

jeffersongoncalves/filakitv5

Filakit v5 is a Laravel package that provides a ready-to-use Filament v5 admin panel kit, including authentication and common scaffolding to help you quickly build and customize back-office applications.

Technical Evaluation

Architecture fit filakitv5 is a Laravel + Filament v5 application starter kit, not a conventional drop-in library. That distinction drives the entire evaluation: value is realized either by scaffolding a greenfield admin app or by diffing the upstream repository into an existing codebase. Fit is strong where the org standardizes on Laravel 11/12, Filament v5, and the TALL stack (Livewire, Alpine, Tailwind, Vite). Fit is poor where the estate is Livewire-averse, already on Filament v3, or has heavily customized its admin layer outside of Filament conventions.

Integration feasibility Mechanically straightforward: Composer + pnpm install, standard Laravel bootstrapping, database required, queue/cache optional. The real integration cost sits in the customization surface, not the install. This release is nominally a dependency bump but contains one structural change — PR #160, "Use user/admin packages for models, resources and login" — which touches the three areas teams most commonly fork: Eloquent models, Filament resources, and the authentication flow.

Technical risk — Medium

  • Structural refactor under a patch-looking version. The version string (5.10.1) tracks Filament's own numbering rather than the kit's independent semver. Consumers cannot infer blast radius from the number; PR #160 is effectively an architectural change shipped in a "bump" release.
  • Auth path moved. Login logic relocating into a package boundary is the highest-risk item — guards, policies, 2FA, and any custom login page are candidates for breakage.
  • Namespace/resource relocation. Published or extended models and resources may no longer resolve if the split moved them out of App\.
  • Low-severity, positive signals. Vite 8.3.1 and two Composer dependency-group bumps are routine. The pnpm-workspace.yaml override relocation plus patches for shell-quote and source-map-js are supply-chain hygiene — almost certainly advisory-driven — and are build-time only.
  • Single-maintainer project. Bus factor of one is the standing, non-version-specific risk.

Key questions

  1. Is the kit consumed as a Composer dependency or as a template repository? This determines whether composer update is safe or whether a manual diff is mandatory.
  2. Are the new "user" and "admin" packages first-party (in-repo, path-repositories) or separately published Composer packages? What are their namespaces and release guarantees?
  3. Did composer.json move to filament/filament: ^5.10? What is the new floor and ceiling?
  4. Does PR #160 ship an upgrade guide, and are migrations/seeders changed? Is any data migration required for existing installs?
  5. Does the login move break existing guards, remember-me, password reset, or 2FA?
  6. Which advisories do the shell-quote and source-map-js overrides address, and are they build-only?
  7. What is test coverage on the auth and resource layers, and does CI exercise an upgrade path or only a fresh scaffold?

Integration Approach

Stack fit Laravel + Filament v5 + Livewire + Alpine + Tailwind, Vite 8, pnpm as the JS package manager. Teams on npm/yarn will need to reconcile the pnpm-workspace.yaml override strategy or lose the transitive patches.

Migration path

  • Template consumption (most likely): do not merge blindly. Produce a three-way diff of 5.8.4...5.10.1 and apply selectively, with PR #160 reviewed line-by-line rather than trusted as a bump.
  • Dependency consumption: pin the exact version, upgrade on a branch, and treat the package split as a breaking change until proven otherwise.

Compatibility checks before committing

  • PHP and Laravel version constraints against the target app.
  • Filament 5.10.x alignment — the kit's version is coupled to Filament's, so a Filament minor can arrive inside a kit "patch."
  • Livewire and Vite/Node versions; the pnpm workspace file move can silently disable overrides in a non-workspace repo.
  • Namespace resolution for any locally extended model, resource, or login class.

Sequencing

  1. Spike in a throwaway scaffold to observe the new user/admin package topology firsthand.
  2. Review PR #160 diff and confirm whether an upgrade guide exists.
  3. Inventory local customizations against moved classes (models, resources, auth).
  4. Pin the version; run the full test suite plus manual smoke on login, password reset, and admin CRUD.
  5. Stage, then promote with a documented rollback to 5.8.4.

Operational Impact

Maintenance High cadence, Dependabot-driven, version-locked to Filament. Auto-merge is scoped to GitHub Actions only, which is the right boundary — runtime and dev dependencies still require human review. Budget recurring effort for diff review on every upstream release, not just this one.

Support Community-only: GitHub issues, single maintainer, no vendor SLA. Acceptable for internal tooling; a poor fit for anything customer-facing with uptime commitments unless the team can absorb upstream maintenance itself.

Scaling Runtime characteristics are inherited from Filament/Livewire, not from this kit. The JS patches and override relocation are build-time concerns with no production scaling impact.

Failure modes

  • Silent fork drift — local edits diverge from upstream until a diff becomes unmergeable.
  • Auth regression — the login relocation breaks an unexercised guard or policy path in production rather than in CI.
  • Version-number illusion — a "patch" bump carries structural change and gets fast-tracked through review.
  • Override loss — the pnpm-workspace.yaml move silently drops security patches in repos not configured as workspaces.
  • Upstream coupling — a Filament minor lands inside a kit release and surfaces incompatibilities downstream.

Ramp-up Low for Filament-experienced engineers (hours to productive, days to confident). Medium for teams new to Filament — the new user/admin package split adds a layer of indirection that is currently undocumented, so plan a short internal architecture note mapping the new boundaries before onboarding.
