Laracache Laravel Package

jeandormehl/laracache

Laracache is a lightweight Laravel package that provides a simple caching layer for your application. It works with Laravel's cache system to help speed up responses and reduce repetitive work, with straightforward helpers for storing and clearing cached data.

Product Decisions This Supports

  • Performance/scale roadmap: A Laravel-native caching layer is a cheap lever for latency and infrastructure spend. Adopting it defers the "build our own cache invalidation" conversation and lets the team spend that effort on product surface instead.
  • Build vs. buy: The build-vs-buy answer here leans adopt. Caching is undifferentiated infrastructure for most products; a maintained package is almost always cheaper than an owned implementation plus its on-call burden.
  • PHP/runtime upgrade sequencing: The 5.0.0 release is effectively a PHP 8.5 compatibility drop (PR #55, "Support PHP 8.5"). The major version bump tells you the maintainer is treating runtime support as a breaking boundary. That makes this package a dependency in your PHP upgrade critical path — the platform upgrade and this package's upgrade should be planned as one work item, not two.
  • Dependency-risk tracking: Single-maintainer packages with thin changelogs belong on a standing risk register. The 5.0.0 notes contain no deprecations, no migration guide, and no behavioral changes listed — a one-line changelog on a major version is a signal to verify, not to trust.

When to Consider This Package

Consider it when:

  • You run a supported Laravel version and are targeting PHP 8.5, where v5.0.0 is the version that keeps you current.
  • You want a drop-in caching layer with minimal integration surface — the v4→v5 diff as published is compatibility-only, implying little or no application code change.
  • Caching is a supporting concern, not a differentiator, and you're comfortable with a small-maintainer dependency.

Look elsewhere when:

  • You are not yet on PHP 8.5. v5.0.0 offers no listed feature value over v4, so upgrading early buys you risk without benefit — pin v4 and revisit at your PHP upgrade window.
  • You need vendor SLAs, security response commitments, or a commercial support path. Nothing in this release changes the support posture.
  • Your caching needs are non-trivial (multi-region invalidation, strict consistency guarantees, cache-stampede control at scale). A general-purpose Laravel cache package is unlikely to be the right primitive, and the changelog gives no evidence of investment there.
  • Before adoption, engineering must confirm what v5.0.0 actually drops (minimum PHP/Laravel versions) and whether any behavioral change rides along with the compatibility bump. "Major version, one line of notes" is not sufficient due diligence for a production dependency.

How to Pitch It (Stakeholders)

To executives: This is a low-cost performance dependency, not a platform bet. The new 5.0.0 release is a maintenance update that adds PHP 8.5 support and requires no product work. The only decision it forces is a scheduling one: bundle this upgrade into our existing PHP 8.5 migration rather than running it as a standalone project. Risk is modest but real — the package is maintained by a very small team, so we should keep it off any critical path and re-evaluate if it goes quiet.

To engineering: v5.0.0 is a major bump whose entire published changelog is PHP 8.5 support. Treat the version boundary as a compatibility cut. Two asks before we move: (1) diff the composer constraints and identify the exact PHP/Laravel floor v5 imposes, and (2) smoke-test cache read/write and invalidation paths in staging — a major version with no migration notes means the absence of documented breaking changes is not the same as the absence of breaking changes. Until then, stay pinned to v4 and pin tightly, since a major release signals the maintainer is willing to move the floor.
