Newsapi Laravel Package

jcobhams/newsapi

jcobhams/newsapi is a PHP client for NewsAPI.org that lets you fetch top headlines, search articles, and list sources using simple, fluent methods. It handles API requests, query parameters, and responses, making it easy to add news feeds to Laravel or plain PHP applications.

Product Decisions This Supports

  • Feature validation before investment. This package makes a "news" surface (headline feed, topic monitor, competitor watchlist) a days-not-weeks spike. It answers "do users actually engage with news content in our product?" before anyone commits to an ingestion pipeline, dedupe strategy, or paid data contract.
  • Build vs. buy, at the smallest possible scale. The honest comparison isn't "this package vs. building a client" — a client is a few hundred lines. It's "this package vs. building a news platform." Adopting it cheaply defers the real build (crawling, entity extraction, ranking, archival) until demand is proven.
  • Roadmap input for content-driven surfaces. Market-intelligence dashboards, PR/media monitoring, editorial tooling, alerting on keywords, and "grounding" recent headlines into an LLM/RAG feature are all reachable in a sprint. Usage data from the spike then justifies or kills the roadmap line item.
  • Vendor/API decision framing. Evaluating the wrapper forces the team to confront the decision that actually matters: NewsAPI's plan tiers, commercial-use terms, rate limits, and 24-hour delay on free/dev keys. That's a business decision, not a library decision, and this package is a cheap way to surface it early.
  • Explicit "do not build" call. For internal analyst tooling or a throwaway demo, the correct PM decision is often to accept a thin, lightly maintained dependency and avoid owning a news pipeline at all.

When to Consider This Package

Consider it when:

  • You are on PHP/Laravel, the target source is specifically NewsAPI.org, and you need top headlines / everything / sources — nothing more exotic.
  • The work is a prototype, internal dashboard, or discovery spike with a known end date, where time-to-demo dominates maintainability.
  • Volume sits comfortably inside NewsAPI's developer tier, and you can tolerate the free-tier content delay.
  • You are willing to isolate it behind your own NewsSource interface (a Laravel service provider binding plus a config file for the API key), so a swap to GNews, NewsCatcher, Bing News, GDELT, or an in-house client is a one-class change.
  • You accept that caching, retries, backoff, and rate-limit handling are yours to add — budget for that, don't assume it's included.

Look elsewhere when:

  • It's a commercial product. NewsAPI's free/developer tier is not licensed for commercial use; that constraint, not this repo, should drive the decision.
  • Dependency hygiene is enforced. 43 stars, zero dependents, a single maintainer, and a last release of February 2023 mean it will fail most supply-chain or "actively maintained" policies. Writing the equivalent client in-house is a half-day and removes the risk entirely.
  • You need real-time delivery, high volume, full-text search, historical archive, deduplication, or broad non-English coverage. This is a request wrapper; none of that exists here.
  • You expect first-class Laravel ergonomics — publishable config, facades, HTTP-fake test helpers, queue integration. You will be writing that layer yourself.
  • Security scanning blocks stale dependencies, or the package conflicts with your pinned Guzzle/PHP versions.

A reasonable rule: adopt for a time-boxed spike with a written exit criterion ("replace with in-house client before GA"), not as standing infrastructure.

How to Pitch It (Stakeholders)

For executives (one paragraph): We can test whether a news feature is worth building for roughly a day of engineering and zero licensing cost — the package is MIT-licensed and adds no infrastructure. It lets us put real headlines in front of users and measure engagement before we commit budget to a content pipeline or a paid data contract. Two caveats belong in the decision: the underlying NewsAPI free tier is developer-use only with delayed articles, so any commercial launch needs a paid plan; and the library itself is small and lightly maintained, so we should treat it as a disposable prototype tool, not a platform dependency. Recommend approving a two-week, one-engineer spike with a go/no-go on measured engagement, not on the library's merits.

For engineering: This is a thin HTTP wrapper around NewsAPI v2's three endpoints — no framework coupling, no magic. You'll be responsible for the API key (config + .env), response caching, retry/backoff on 429s, error mapping, and test doubles. Please bind it behind an internal NewsSource contract and a Laravel service provider on day one so we can swap providers or drop in a 200-line in-house client without touching feature code. Assume the package is frozen — last release Feb 2023, single maintainer, no dependents — so pin the version, vendor or fork it if the spike graduates, and don't let it leak into shared/core code paths.
