Product Decisions This Supports
- Feature scope: media/asset management in the admin. Decides whether "upload, preview, attach, and remove images/documents on a model" ships as a native-feeling Nova form experience or as a bolt-on screen. This is the core capability the field provides (single and multiple uploads against Spatie Media Library collections, tied into Nova create/update forms).
- Build vs. buy for admin CRUD conveniences. A 38-star, archived field is a data point for the "buy" side of the ledger: the functionality is small and well-understood, so the real question is not "can we build it" but "is a free, unmaintained shortcut cheaper than a day or two of internal field work plus ongoing ownership." The package effectively prices the feature at near-zero up front and non-zero forever.
- Roadmap sequencing for content/CMS-style surfaces. If a resource needs catalogue imagery, hero images, downloadable documents, or per-record attachments, this tells you whether media handling is a v1 item or can be deferred behind a simpler upload field. It supports deferring richer capabilities (crops, conversions, focal points, responsive derivatives) that this field does not address.
- Platform/upgrade decisions. Because the last release is January 2019 and the repository is archived, adopting it materially constrains future Laravel/Nova upgrades. That is a roadmap input, not just an engineering detail: it argues for pinning the admin stack or scheduling an upgrade that includes replacing this field.
- Buy-vs-replace decisions on existing installs. For teams already running Nova with Spatie Media Library, this supports the "keep, wrap, or replace" call — especially whether to swap in a thin custom field or move to Nova's built-in file/image field where the collection semantics are not needed.
- Use-case triage. Good fit signals: internal back-office tools, small content teams, a handful of models with one or two media collections, low blast radius if upload UX degrades. Poor fit signals: customer-facing uploads, multi-tenant isolation requirements, audit/compliance needs, or heavy image pipeline requirements.
When to Consider This Package
Consider it only when all of the following hold:
- You are already committed to Laravel Nova and
spatie/laravel-medialibrary on the same model, and you want the media collection managed inside the resource form rather than in a separate screen.
- Your Nova and Laravel versions are verified compatible with the 2019 release. Check
composer.json constraints and the field's front-end stack (a 2019 Nova field predates Nova 4's Vue 3 tooling) before assuming it installs at all.
- The surface is internal and low-risk — an admin panel where a broken upload widget is an inconvenience, not a customer-facing outage.
- You need only basic attach/detach/preview, single or multiple files, and you are content with Media Library's own conversion and storage behaviour rather than field-level controls.
Look elsewhere — or build — when any of these apply:
- Maintenance is a requirement. "Archived: yes" means no fixes, no security patches, no compatibility updates. Treat it as a code sample, not a dependency, unless you are prepared to fork and own it.
- You are on a current Nova or Laravel release. Expect to need a fork; budget for that before it appears on a roadmap.
- You need more than attach-and-preview: cropping, focal points, per-collection validation rules, ordering, alt text/i18n, bulk operations, or a media library browser shared across resources.
- You need Nova's first-party file/image field to suffice. If the model does not genuinely need Media Library collections and conversions, the built-in field removes an entire third-party dependency from your admin stack.
- Compliance, tenancy, or audit matter. Archived code is a poor place to sit for anything with data-residency, access-control, or traceability obligations.
- A maintained alternative exists. Before adopting, confirm whether Spatie's own Nova tooling or an actively maintained community field covers the same ground; prefer a maintained package even at a licence cost.
How to Pitch It (Stakeholders)
To executives: This is a small UI convenience that makes image and document management feel native inside our admin panel, on top of a media library we would otherwise manage separately. The strategic value is modest — it saves a few days of admin work — but the package is archived and last released in January 2019. That means no one is fixing it, no one is patching it, and it will not track our Laravel or Nova upgrades. My recommendation is to treat it as a reference implementation, not a dependency: use it (or its approach) to ship the capability quickly if we are on a compatible stack and the feature is internal-only, and plan to own that code ourselves. It should not appear on a roadmap as a lasting architectural choice.
To engineering: The field does exactly one thing well — it wires Spatie Media Library collections into Nova create/update forms with upload, preview, attach, and multi-file support. The trade-off is ownership: the repo is read-only, the release predates Nova 4's front-end tooling, and composer.json constraints will likely block install on current versions. If we adopt it, we are effectively forking it. The honest comparison is: a few days to build a thin custom Nova field (or reuse Nova's built-in file/image field if we do not need Media Library collections) against an indefinite maintenance tail on a dead package. I would like a short spike to confirm whether Media Library is genuinely required for these models — if it is not, the built-in field makes this whole question disappear. If it is, I would rather build the field in-house and keep the dependency surface at zero.
