Serializer Laravel Package

ivory/serializer

ivory/serializer is a lightweight Laravel and PHP package for transforming models and data structures into consistent arrays or JSON. Define serialization rules to control output, simplify API responses, and keep data formatting predictable across your application.

Product Decisions This Supports

  • Build vs. buy for multi-format ingestion: This package is a reference point for the "format-agnostic intake" feature — CSV, JSON, XML, YAML handled behind one interface with one adapter per format. It confirms that multi-format deserialization is a small-surface, well-understood problem. The build-vs-buy conclusion: don't build a bespoke parser, and don't adopt this archived package — wrap a maintained library per format behind your own interface.
  • Roadmap prioritization: With 3 stars, 0 dependents, and archived status, adopting it would make a non-differentiating capability into a permanent maintenance liability. That supports deprioritizing "native multi-format import" as a headline feature and instead scoping it as plumbing behind a single, well-tested ingestion service.
  • Format/packaging strategy: The library's four-format coverage is a useful requirements checklist. It supports the conclusion that CSV + JSON cover the bulk of real import demand while XML/YAML are long-tail — an input to packaging decisions (e.g., "XML import" as a paid/enterprise tier; YAML only on contract).
  • Architecture decision: Reinforces defining an internal DeserializerInterface rather than depending directly on any community package, so format support is decoupled from vendor choice and swap costs stay low.
  • Explicit non-decision: Because it is archived and unmaintained, it does not support a "buy/adopt" decision. Its PM value is as a reference implementation and requirement spec — not as a dependency.

When to Consider This Package

Consider only as a reference implementation, not a production dependency. It is archived, targets PHP 7.0+, has no dependents, and has no community to absorb security patches or PHP 8+/9 compatibility work. Any Laravel app on a supported PHP version will need to vendor or fork the code — both worse than picking a maintained library.

Consider it when:

  • You are writing a spec, not code. Use it to enumerate the interface surface of a format-agnostic deserializer: input source (string/stream/file), format detection, type mapping, error reporting, and per-format edge cases (CSV delimiter/encoding, XML namespacing, YAML anchors). This is genuinely useful and free.
  • You need a small, readable example of adapter-per-format design for an architecture review or onboarding.
  • You are pinned to legacy PHP 7.x in an isolated service — and even then, porting the pattern beats installing the archived package.

Look elsewhere when:

  • You need a maintained dependency. Prefer symfony/serializer (broad format + normalization support, actively maintained, Laravel-friendly via spatie/laravel-data or direct container bindings), league/csv for CSV, spatie/array-to-xml/simplexml for XML, and symfony/yaml for YAML.
  • You need object hydration, validation, or nested/relational mapping. Symfony Serializer plus Laravel validation/form requests outperform a thin library.
  • You need streaming or large-file handling. Use league/csv readers and XMLReader with queued jobs; none of these small libs solve memory-bounded import.
  • Untrusted input is involved. XXE protection, YAML object instantiation, and CSV formula injection all demand active maintenance and deliberate configuration — an archived package is the wrong place for that trust.
  • You need a support contract or named maintainer for procurement/compliance sign-off.

Net recommendation: reject as a dependency; mine it for requirements. Record the pattern in an ADR, pick maintained libraries per format, and wrap them in your own interface.

How to Pitch It (Stakeholders)

To executives (30-second version): "Multi-format import — CSV, JSON, XML, YAML — is something customers ask for, and it looks strategic but is really plumbing. We evaluated a small open-source library that does exactly this. It's technically neat but archived, unmaintained, and used by nobody, so adopting it would mean owning that code forever to save a few days of work. My recommendation: don't take the dependency. We should still support these formats, but on libraries with active maintenance, behind our own thin interface. That costs us nothing and removes a long-term maintenance risk. The real product question isn't which library — it's which formats to support first and how to package them: CSV and JSON at all tiers, XML as a paid add-on, YAML only if a contract requires it."

To engineering:

  • Don't add ivory/serializer to composer.json. PHP 7.0-era, archived, zero dependents, no path to PHP 8+/9 support; manual wiring since there's no Laravel integration layer.
  • Use it as a design reference: one DeserializerInterface, one adapter per format, explicit format detection and error types. Copy the shape, not the code.
  • Proposed stack: symfony/serializer for JSON/YAML/XML object mapping, league/csv for streaming CSV, validation at the Laravel form-request layer, imports dispatched to queued jobs with per-row error reporting.
  • Guardrails from day one: XXE disabled, YAML parsed with object support off, CSV formula-injection escaping, file-size and row-count limits, idempotent re-import, and per-format contract tests behind the adapter.

To sales/support: "We can support the formats your customers ask for, but we'll roll them out progressively rather than all at once, and we won't ship YAML unless a deal depends on it."
