itiden/laravel-image
A Laravel package for handling images with a fluent, expressive API. Generate, resize, and cache image variations, then serve optimized, responsive assets through Laravel's filesystem and storage layers with minimal configuration.
Architecture fit
itiden/laravel-opixlig is a Laravel wrapper around Glide for on-demand image derivation (resize, crop, format conversion, and other manipulations). Architecturally it sits between the storage layer (local/S3) and the HTTP layer, generating derivatives through a route rather than pre-baking them at upload time. Two changes in v1.0.0 materially improve fit for template-heavy apps: presets move transformation definitions out of call sites and into config, and the config refactor to a nested defaults key establishes a single inheritance point for baseline transformations. The Glide 3 upgrade is the strategically important item — it aligns the package with Statamic 6's bundled Glide, avoiding two Glide majors resolving in the same container.
Integration feasibility Low-to-moderate. Standard Composer install plus config publish; no service provider gymnastics or external infrastructure required beyond a writable cache path or object-storage bucket. The real feasibility question is not installation but cache topology: where derivatives are written, whether a CDN sits in front, and who owns invalidation. The new browser-cache-clearing behaviour is a convenience, not a substitute for a proper derivative purge strategy.
Technical risk
default_keys → nested defaults is a silent-ish break: existing published config files will not be auto-migrated, and the failure mode is likely "defaults silently ignored" rather than a hard error. Every app with a published config needs a manual diff.Key questions
default_keys → defaults rename?Stack fit
Best fit is a Laravel app already on, or migrating to, Statamic 6 + Glide 3. Laravel Boost and AGENTS.md are developer-experience additions (AI-assisted coding context) — zero runtime footprint, zero production risk, and a genuine onboarding accelerant for teams using agentic tooling. They should not factor into the adoption decision.
Compatibility
Treat v1.0.0 as a coupled upgrade with Statamic 6. Applications remaining on Statamic 5 or a Laravel version that Glide 3 excludes should stay pinned at 0.6.x and accept that they will diverge from upstream. Confirm constraints from composer.json before committing to a plan; the release notes alone don't state them.
Migration path
composer update itiden/laravel-opixlig --with-dependencies and inspect the resolved Glide version.default_keys into the nested defaults block rather than overwriting the published file.Sequencing Config migration and the Glide 3 bump must land in the same change — splitting them makes it impossible to attribute regressions. Presets are a separate, reversible follow-up. Cache-clearing touches HTTP headers and CDN behaviour, so it belongs in a release where you can watch edge-cache hit rates. If a CDN is in front of the app, coordinate the deploy with a cache-warming pass or expect a cold-cache CPU spike.
Maintenance Derivative caches grow unbounded unless pruned; budget for a scheduled cleanup and a storage-cost line item, especially on object storage. Config file becomes a shared artifact — assign an owner, because presets and defaults are now a de facto design-system contract that multiple teams may edit.
Support No commercial support. Itiden maintains this as an agency-side package; expect issue response on a best-effort basis and no deprecation runway guarantees. For a business-critical image pipeline, plan for the ability to fork and self-patch — keep the package unpinned enough to allow a VCS override.
Scaling
Image derivation is CPU- and memory-bound, not IO-bound. Risk concentrates in (a) PHP memory_limit on large source images, and (b) thundering-herd regeneration when the cache is cold after a deploy that changes URLs. Mitigations: CDN in front with long TTLs, immutable derivative URLs where possible, and a warm-up job post-deploy. On-demand generation is fine at moderate volume; at high volume, move to queued pre-generation.
Failure modes
defaults absent) → transformations silently fall back to defaults, producing wrong-sized images that pass tests but look broken in production. Snapshot-test rendered image dimensions.Ramp-up
Low for anyone fluent in Laravel. Presets plus the generated AGENTS.md/Boost integration measurably shorten time-to-first-correct-transformation. Estimate ~0.5 day for a greenfield integration and 1–3 days for an established app with many transformation call sites and a published config, with the majority of that time in URL-diff verification rather than code changes.
